In a profoundly shocking and thought-provoking talk, Brooks takes us through his life story. He started out unremarkably in Columbine, Colorado having typical boyhood adventures with his buddy Dylan. Until one day as a teenager, in the blink of an eye, his life story was completely transformed. Brooks was surrounded by world wide news story and was forced to make sense out of this nonsensical tragedy. From this, he drew profound insights about how humans find meaning in the symbols and events of their lives. Ultimately, he learned what traditional storytelling techniques can’t tell us about life, and eventually realized what new technologies, such as virtual reality, can now give us. Brooks’ wide-ranging intellect allows regular viewers exciting ideas drawn from Slavoj ZIzek to Jacques Lecomte - all the way through to popular movies including those by his former boss, James Cameron. Finally, Brooks is thrilled to share his latest life event, which he must now integrate into his own story. Which provides a glorious, happy ending to his life’s symbolic order. Brooks’ intelligence shines throughout this unique and unforgettable talk. [Bio intentionally left blank.] This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Jim Dandy even if he knew doesn’t mean he took it serious. I mean if he had I’m sure he and his brother wouldn’t have attended class that day. I mean prior to Columbine people just though their peers were trying to act tough or just blowing off steam when they’d say something crazy. Even know it’s impossible to know who’s serious and who isn’t. You can’t call the cops everytime you suspect something. That’s isn’t fair cause 99% of the time the people called on are not doing anything illegal and shouldn’t it’s not right for them to be treated as if they are. Bottom line is this, he isn’t responsible for the action of others, no of us are. It’s not our responsibility to stop incidents that are out of our power to control period

That’s not true, Eric wasn’t even geared up yet when Brooks talked to him. If Eric pulled out a shotgun and killed Brooks it would’ve blew the whole plan, if you remember the plan was for the bombs to go off. Shooting someone outside before the bombs even detonated would’ve ruined NBK. So even if Eric and Brooks were still enemies, Brooks would have not been shot in that scenario either.

Not really. Eric still didn't like him, it was just more convenient to let him go so they could stick with their plans. Had Brooks been inside the library he would have been a goner had Eric had his way. Maybe Dylan could have convinced Eric to let him go, but it wouldn't have been Eric's choice. love how brooks takes the knowledge from the massacre and using it to better the world. he took the role right after the shooting and ran with it. from telling the media the truth of columbine, from working in media, to today. it’s crazy to see him grow over the passed 20 years become the person he is today. it’s unique that some people involved with columbine refuse to say the shooters names, but to brooks he’s just “my friend, dylan”.big congrats to brooks and his wife for their beautiful child!

He proably knew Eric Harris was serious when he said he liked him and to go home. He knew how to instinctively recognize threat by the irregular heightened sensory "vibes" Eric was radiating. It's built into our brain since early man. He'd spent a lot of time around Harris. There's no way he felt nothing. He felt a twinge (a disturbance in the freaking force. we all have it to some extent.) We're animals. Brooks was wary from what Harris was emitting on a SUBVERBAL level. He just can't say so. If he copped to it, imagine how many people's minds would drift and obsess on him as a "if you'd only told or done something that morning, my child (brother, sister, etc.) would still be alive." It makes sense for everyone involved, and the survivors, for him to not say so. It's more beneficial to everyone's lives.

Dear Brooks, I have just read your book, "No Easy Answers" within two weeks or so. As I was reading it with great interest, I just happened to find this video. I have decided to wait and watch the video after I finished reading. Thank you for finding the courage and the strength to share your story with the world. While your arguments about narrative, agency and event went over my head in a way, I was captivated by your presentation. You have a true gift for both spoken and written expression, and much charisma. I'm so happy to see you've continued to develop in this area since the debate club. I wanted to share my thoughts with you (in the off chance that you read the comments to this video). I am awed and inspired by your, and your parents', unwavering courage and unflinching honesty in the face of an unimaginable tragedy, slander and lies. Facing grief, the pointed fingers of misguided and misinformed grieving friends, apathetic administration and corrupt police, legislators and politicians as just a teenager and standing tall through it all... you are an inspirational figure for me. I wish you nothing but the best in your new role as a father and husband, in your virtual reality pursuits, as well as many more years of good health for your amazing parents and brother. The effects are very little from past to present . According to studies in time travel . Or the observational effects with particle wave experimental results. This man has FAR more knowledge on what really happened that day and if you think otherwise ask yourself, "Have I read ANY of the facts or just what the news told me?" Find your answers no matter how terrifying they are to you and Columbine was NOT what it seemed. Ask FEMA why did you CHOOSE reps from Jefferson County to go to Maryland to train in an active shooter drill but ONLY them in late '97? Why are there HUNDREDS of affidavits claiming for A FACT Joe Staire (dead now) was involved along with many others? Why is he alive and not Joe? Robert Perry? Chris Morris? ASK QUESTION GAIN ANSWERS

Why do I get the feeling looking at the pictures of Dylan and Eric after death, that Eric shot Dylan first, then himself. I really don't think Dylan wanted to die or even kill. Eric played upon Dylan's depression. Don't get me wrong. Dylan killed. But I still think Eric was the mastermind and manipulator.
@TIMEPPF
@TIMEPPF 3 роки тому
Well by the time they went back to the library what other options would Dylan have? Go to jail for life or finally give in to the depression. I think dylan's blood and brain matter on eric's pant leg prove that eric was already dead when dylan shot himself. I think he saw himself as the last one standing at that point and realized the hopeless of his situation and the failure of their plans.

You could be right I've heard that the bullet exit wound on Dylan's head indicated that Eric might have murdered him. The "tech-9" gun Dylan used may have been difficult for him to use on himself. Heard about this toward the end of Randy Brown's interview with Bill Ockham. But since it's been 20 years since the case we'll probably truly never know what went down.
@DoGmAnGuY1758
@DoGmAnGuY1758 3 роки тому
@@citizn-xh7rv the only thing holding me back from seriously considering Randy's proposition, is that he says he has a photo that isn't publicly available and it makes it obvious that Eric shot Dylan, something with the hand Dylan had the gun in and what side of his head had the bullet hole, but that he won't ever make the picture public. To a degree it's one of those "oh, well that seems a bit convenient" things, and I just can't get over it enough to truly believe Eric shot Dylan. There's too many other details lining up like the molotov cocktail fluid being on top of Eric's brain matter meaning the brain matter was there first, and how the bodies fell with Dylan ending up on top of Eric's leg. But Dylan also had the gun in the wrong hand to shoot himself on the side of his head, and apparently his chamber had a bullet in but no magazine, meaning he hadn't shot the only bullet he had in his chamber so it makes it look like he hadn't shot himself, it's all super weird so it's hard to truly know what happened.

kelly gallagher well after Eric had threatened to blow him up. And had a uncomfortable relationship with him through classes. Eric actually warmed back to him in the end. As u can see by the pictures. Obviously brooks was on his way out anyway. And didn’t question this by Eric as he knew how difficult he was and probably didn’t want to jeopardise him liking him.

Don't you think if he knew Eric Harris was going to shoot up the school he would have reported beforehand? Dont forget that Eric Harris threatened his family, also he was not a silent partner. If he knew he would have stopped Dylan because he was closer to him.

Makes me wonder how things would have played out if Brooks had bumped into Dylan outside instead of Eric. It opens a whole new "what if" scenario. I imagine that Dylan wouldn't have been as calm and casual as Eric but instead nervous and fidgety. I can't imagine Dylan just casually telling Brooks to go home. Another thing is what a coincidence that Brooks ran into Eric. Columbine was and is huge and the high school I attended was roughly the same size (over 2 ,000 students) the chances of just bumping into someone you knew was extremely slim. I spent 4 years there and it was so crowded and big that you could walk through the halls daily and still see unfamiliar faces. They eventually had to build 2 more buildings just to hold all the students. I don't think its a conspiracy theory or anything just a huge coincidence that of all the people he could have bumped into it was Eric.
