In this video, I want to explore the more sinister side of self-improvement and the reasons why it can be harmful to so many people.
As a disclaimer just because I use somebodies clips in this video doesn't mean I think their content is bad, for the most part, it's the exact opposite.

"If you're looking for self-help, why would you read a book written by somebody else? That's not self-help, that's help." - George Carlin

I always knew that help from others wouldn’t change shit, it’s only me who knows what to do and where to help. Especially some random rich dude can’t help you, it’s about you outgrowing yourself, not growing with them.
@Koon183
@Koon183 2 місяці тому
My interpretation may be wrong, but in a sense, searching for help is important when trying to help one-self. Most times, we can fall into our own biases by thinking that our solution is efficient or effective towards our goals (such as covering our insecurities that affect our life un general). You can only help yourself in the context of Identifying the problem you are facing, but when you don't have the knowledge or methods to seek for a viable solution for said problem, seeking for information to do so is a viable alternative. Yet again, this is my own interpretation in response to the quote you just cited, so i'm open to any feedback or clarifications.
@jimmorrison903
@jimmorrison903 2 місяці тому
@@Koon183What I gathered from George Carlin's quote is that everyone's lives are different. And whatever helped the author of the self help book, be it self confidence or discipline, might not work for you. Because everyone reacts to situations differently. If I am self help guru who tells you meditation helped me in making me a better person, its because it made me a better person. But maybe the key to make you being a better person is MMA or reducing your screen time. In the end, all of us have our demons and fears, each are different and specific, and require specific solutions, but self help books usually aren't that specific. Because self help gurus can't read our minds to know what our demons are. I agree that sometimes you need help from others when trying to help oneself, but I feel the help has to be more than just a book or video. Maybe the help has to be some emotional support, like a community or an accountability partner.

Great video! I read "The courage to be disliked" a couple of months ago and it blew my mind! I was suffering from bad social anxiety and just this one sentence "Everyone can change, you just need the courage to do so" started to change my life...until I started to implement more - lets call it - "selfhelp knowledge?", like many things from NoFap to Stoicism. What happened was that in the end i didn't know which "rule" to follow. As a result I got anxious again. I'm still reading books about Stoicism and other philosophies, but in the end I just try to stick to my guns and stick with the one mantra that made a real difference. Don't put too much on your plate, when you can't eat all of it. It will make you feel nausious.

Not everyone comes into self improvement from the way you spoke on it. As a matter of fact, I grew up focused on improving myself before I ever knew self improvement was a thing. I was a kid and it was just a lifestyle. Id listen to my dad lecture me on avoiding drugs and certain situations, he’d wake up early, workout and eat healthy. I lived with my mom away from him and it was hell with her so growing up in an frequently traumatic environment, finding a way to escape was just a natural reflect and improving myself was the main idea. As a matter of fact I protested reading anyone else’s idea of self improvement, philosophy etc because I took pride in developing my own and not consuming other’s ideas. I only share this story to show that not everyone comes into it as some helpless brat who wants chicks and a Lamborghini, thats not self improvement. That’s commercial/industry gurus.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I will say for myself, I watch some videos almost as a reminder of why I'm doing what I'm doing. I do think it is really easy to become too obsessed with self improvement to the point where you're just doing random things throughout your day that you think are useful, but they're really not. If I or someone else focuses on 1 or 2 things to correct or improve, then that's probably going to solve most of the other problems, which you kinda said. I like the video man, hopefully you're doing well and thanks.

You're making great points, and overall spreading a very realistic "wake-up call" to a lot of people. I think your strongest point was mentioning that, although watching a self-help/self-improvements video can be beneficial, there comes a point when you start taking every supplement the pharmacy has to offer. And that causes issues such as a falsely-perceived reality to which people become addicted to The best conclusion I could personally write on this topic is, that the self-improvement game has been turned into an industry which takes advantage of those who are actually trying to solve their own on-going problems P.S. your formula is ideal. It is simple, and real.

Honestly I've noticed the last month the biggest thing I need to cut down on, is UKposts. I'm not making some clever jab about your video, I'm being serious. I watch hours upon hours of content a day--even informative content--but do I NEED that information? Do I NEED to know the details of every navy battle in WW2? Do I NEED to see every funny meme? I cut out Reddit and felt much better, but I realize that UKposts has taken that spot where even if I'm watching content related to getting better at mixing music, would it better if I just spent the time... you know... actually mixing music instead of watching yet another video of "my top 20 game changing mixing tips"? A lot of times, watching informative content on a topic can be an excuse to not actually... do... the thing you want to get better at. Do I need to watch a bunch of videos on "the best" exercises to do, or should I literally just walk out my door and start jogging and see how I feel after a few weeks. My need to "understand" the best way to do everything is overwhelming me actually doing things. I have ADD, and I think putting hard time limits on "learning" vs "practicing" would be beneficial. I may think "It's 2 AM, I don't want to practice but I could watch a video" but how many talented people before the internet had free time at 2 AM and ... picked up their guitar because there was nothing else to do. How many hobos on the street corner can shred guitar better than me because that's all they do with their free time instead of watching hours of "how to get good at guitar" videos.

I always thought there was something to optimise or fix about myself until I found out it is just mental health/insecurity and the way to fix it is being oneself authentically. It is so underwhelming (as a “fix“ - you feel like it is way to easy to be true) if you overcomplicate your life by being a specific way only to find out there is nothing wrong in the first place and it is just your feelings, which might need attention or create problems by being nourished in this cycle.

I don't think I feel insecure about myself per se. But I feel like I need to be improving. I think this stems from the fact that I had a tough childhood and struggled a lot, but was able to work hard and improve my life and myself. Through being friendleir and more outgoing, working hard at school even though I previously had no opportunities, working out and doing sport and then looking better etc. I feel better when I know I am working towards goals which make me better than a was yesterday. It really is masturbation. Because I do self improvement because it makes me feel good :)

You raise some good points, but take meditation for example- meditation is taking action to become more present, yes to overcome procrastination you must do the thing you dont want to do as frequently as you can, that's discipline, meditation is a good way to overcome impulses, to stop living with the feeling and "become an observer" if that makes sense ie you want to eat some junk food- you meditate, you dont want to as much now, but you still have to not eat that food, you still require action.

I used to watch Iman, but the more I reviewed the thumbnails of his videos, and actually listened, it just felt fake, I felt like a sheep being led. I was really disappointed.

okay wait first, this was way longer than a 4:27 minute video... it is so interesting and says a lot more than a small video like this says. secondly, theres a thing i need to point out, u mentioned u can quit an addiction like smoking by just focusing on smoking, but thats the only thing ur wrong at, not to mention all other points are brilliant! Okay so in smoking, ur making ur life better by NOT doing something, which makes it follow different mechanism to get rid of it. U hv to incorporate good things in ur life to keep ur mind off of it cuz doing it is just an instinct of ur body when ur not doing smth. Its taken from "Easy Peasy method" book. Hope u can see the point. nice work ur doing mate! good job!
