From Millie Bobby Brown's buzz cut in "Stranger Things" to Ana de Armas' Marilyn Monroe curls in "Blonde" (2022), movies and TV shows have had to transform character via wigs for decades. To find out how a master wigmaker designs full heads of hair for movies and TV shows, we visited the New York and Beverly Hills studios of Wigmaker Associates with founder Rob Pickens.
In the era of 4K and HD cameras, the standard for film and TV wigs has never been higher. Digital cameras are significantly less forgiving than film, meaning that hairlines must appear seamless and lace fronts must be finer. Rob's team shows us how they trace the intricacies of actors' hairlines and growth patterns to create wigs that mimic nature. He explains how he worked with "Stranger Things" hair department head Sarah Hindsgaul to make make the short-haired Eleven wig sit invisibly on Millie Bobby Brown's scalp, using techniques such as point knotting and an ingenious application process. And having worked on period pieces like "Pose," "The Gilded Age," and "American Crime Story," Rob discusses how historical settings shape the color and texture of his wigs.
Rob also breaks down how factors like camera and lighting influence wigs' coloring, from Amanda Seyfried's blond in "Mank" (2020) to Eddie's ash brown in "Stranger Things." He worked with hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh to perfect the red of Olivia Wilde's wig in "Don't Worry Darling" (2022) and the multi-dimensional color of Michelle Pfeiffer's Betty Ford wigs for "The First Lady" (2022). Meanwhile, on "Pam & Tommy" (2022), lead hair designer Barry Lee Moe incorporated four shades of blonde into Rob's wigs to make Pam Anderson's signature platinum pop on camera.
Wigmaker Associates' other creations include Tom Hardy's Scarface wigs for "Capone" (2020) and Tom Hanks' Mr. Rogers wigs for "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" (2019). The studio has also built wigs for Will Ferrell in "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" (2020), Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween" (2018), and Billie Eilish in her "Xanny" video (2019).

@Heffalumpz
@Heffalumpz 7 місяців тому
Not really. It’s obviously a wig. A pretty good wig, but obviously still a wig nonetheless. The giveaway is the pristine hairline that is way too thick and uniform. That’s the area where most wigs go wrong. Real hairlines are uneven and staggered, gradually getting thinner and thinner the closer you get to the forehead. There are often short baby hairs at the hairline too. It’s definitely possible to simulate this with a wig, but most don’t seem to have a keen eye for detail like that. I guess it ultimately doesn’t matter though because most people, like you, aren’t very observant or detail-oriented.

I absolutely loved this video. I have had alopecia since my teens and though my first few wigs were just store bought and slapped on I'm a diy lover so I thought myself how to ventilate and create lace wigs and I now have a small business making custom wigs for people with hairloss (or people who just want to rock different hair that looks real). I specialize in vivid, fashion colors like pink, silver, green, multi-colored, rainbow color melts, prism hair, stuff like that so I'm definitely not making a wig to look like someone's slowly graying hair and receding hairline, but the process is pretty much the same. I hope people watching this who criticize wig makers for their prices reconsider after seeing all the work that goes into. And that people will finally realize that almost everyone is wearing a wig on TV and in movies, if not at least half. They just usually look so real you can't tell. And then there are cases like Jessica Alba (though not in the first movie-that was her hair that she bleached to death which is why she couldn't bleach it again in the sequel) and Kristen Stewart (in the reshoots) who both played Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four and for what reasons I don't know we're given utterly egregious wigs despite there being a budget to do better. Ahhhgggg the inconsistency of Hollywood is insane lol 😂

Something that these kind of companies need to investigate further to effectively replicate it is black hair and all its variations. One frustrating example is House of the dragon, the wigs on the Velaryons look weird, they don’t have a silvery shine, and look more like powdered wigs from the 18th century. Laena’s hair looked specially off and dead. The hair of a woman with her same heritage in our world would never ever look like that. Hopefully HBO will update their methods for the next season.

I once went to a wig store in Mexico City with a friend who by that time was a professional belly dancer and needed a long wig for her presentations as her stylist had literally fried her hair and she had to cut it very short. The wig she required needed to be made of natural hair as artificial hair is much stiffer and doesn't move naturally. we found the wig of her dreams, one made of natural hair that had undergone a special treatment that allowed you to dye it, bleach it, curl it, straighten it, and basically do whatever you wanted with it. However, the price was the equivalent of 2,000 USD and it was far from having the level of detail of the wigs shown in this video.

Or just wear your real hair more often. It doesn't look that convincing in real life. I mean look at all the customization they have to do, which am sure regular people can't. Like making the wig fit the actor's head shape. It probably still looks fake up close in real life.

I was amazed with the wigs in LOTR and The Hobbit movies. And also Nuada and Nuala wigs were amazing in Hellboy 2. Those movies started to make me interested in movie wigs. Imagine... you sell your hair and it gets there a movie wig maker, and not long after, one of your favorite actor or actress will wearing it in a movie. :)

they actually looked great to me, super realistic and I've seen a lot of praise for them. Especially the front of the wigs because you couldn't see any lace. (This isn't counting the Black characters as I do think their wigs left a lot to be desired).
@Shaline__

I was looking for this comment. I think the reason is that they used synthetic hair and the hairline wasnt plugged properly. They said it was too expensive to produce so much light blonde wigs, because light blonde is one of the most expensive color. So they decided to use synthetic hair and you can clearly see it. It has a weird shine and the movement looks so unreal. Hope they can change at least for the main characters the wigs in the new season. And lets not talk about all of the Velaryon wigs. Just horrible. Danys Wig was real human hair and is by far the best Targaryen Wig.

@@imsadlol4528 you literally can 😂😂 you know nothing about wigs if you think you can’t get a good wig for $200 sometimes even as low as $100 depending on the length 😂. But keep wasting your money, it’s your pockets that’s burning not mine.
@abbiereynolds8016

@@Alecexo Did you not read that comment properly? Or are you just itching to argue with someone for no reason? They never said anything about buying wigs for themselves, they were specifically talking about wigs used in movies and tv shows. A $200 wig might work great for a regular person going about their daily activities, but it wouldn't look good with the cameras in a professional film studio. Obviously a film studio has the money to spend on much more expensive, custom made wigs that look better and realistic on camera.
