Huh, for some reason that same website also mentioned that that was based on Abagnale’s words and that he was known to just straight up lie in his stories. I guess that’s how somebody could get conned.

I’m inclined to agree with one of the above posters - it’s possible he just took the test over and over until he passed. That’s still possible here in California (reputed to be the toughest bar exam in the nation). You can take the exam as many times as you want until you pass. I’ve known people who took it six or seven times before passing, and they went on to work for good firms and have successful careers. Occasionally thieves and cheats will actually do something honest.

That makes sense. You pass the bar exam in 1978, you get a piece of paper that says you passed the exam and you get your name in a record that nobody checks unless they have a good reason. Forgery takes care of the piece of paper, and being a conman makes sure that nobody checks the record until you're ready to leave town.
