To find out, Si dug out his old Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL3 with 11-speed Campagnolo Chorus that he rode when GCN first started back in 2013, to compare it to his current Canyon Aeroad CFR. What really is the difference? Have bikes got that much faster? Let’s find out!

Was I watching 10yrs ago? - yup. Got my 1st carbon road bike in 2012 as a classic MAMIL mid-life purchase (so I could ride l'étape before I was 50) and after my first winter of training I knew nothing. And I knew I knew nothing. Searched UKposts for advice - and well, been with you ever since. In fact I blame you (Si, that is, not just GCN) for now riding a Gravel bike that is both faster and more comfortable than my 2012 Roubaix. Oh, I also blame you (Si again) for having bikepacked Brussels-Sweden-Brussels last summer (and not my own stupidity!)

Started watching in 2016 but your channel's videos from that 2013 time taught me how to do all sorts of things! Everything from punctures to bike washing. Of course GCN really got me into cycling and passionate about the sport to the point I've been a daily rider for several years now. As for progression, there's clearly been massive improvements in Aero as outlined on GCN. Also your channel got me to beautiful Mallorca, and headed there for Mallorca 312 this year!

I've never ridden a bike costing more than £1000 and I still love cycling. I'm sure that Canyon feels amazing. My reality is that home servicing and available economic parts are more important than marginal gains. I hope that the cycle industry will continue to make 9 speed mechanical, mechanical disc, threaded bottom brackets and external cable frames for many years to come.

Same here, 1000€ got me a GT grade elite gravelbike with Claris and mechanical diskbrakes. It's still my daily driver doing around ~1500Km each month on it, a weekly clean and a new chain every month for 15€ and It's true value for it's money :)

My bike is 10 years old now. External routing, rim brakes, aluminium rims, 10 speed mechanical, 25mm tyres. Slim steel frame as well. Still love it 😊

Steel frames just have a level of class inherent to them, I've got an 86 Peugeot that even though it was pretty lower-middle level, it rides so comfortably and smoothly.

2010, 2x9 speed, Tiagra and Ultegra mix, and 23 mm conti-s, 8.6 kilo "gold bar" to me. Lately installed new BB, soon to replace hubs or brakes (must pick)...

@@gcn One thing I did not see was a bike weigh in , I would be interested to see the differing weights. Also a lot of the advantage of the Canyon would be the wheels / tyres rather than the frame and concealed cables etc. ( I'm just guessing ) I would like to see it run again with modern 50/60 mm carbon rims with modern tyres in the older bike, same as u are running on the canyon . This would be very interesting , because I know the difference in feel when u put deep carbon rims and modern rubber on a older bike.

I have a suggestion for one topic-cycling after inguinial hernia surgery...maybe to interview some specialist doctor, some cyclist who have gone thru that situation, etc...many people, including myself, have found themself im that situation because this injury is actually common among male population...tnx in advance!

I am 72 and riding an all campy DeRosa primato (steel) from 2001 and I still love it. Very quick and responsive. Still like a rocket descending. A true joy to ride!

@@gcn I have upgraded over time. Riding 11spd chorus and C17 shaman wheels. I would consider a new setup but it would never be riden to it's racing potential. It would be sweet to ride

Give the SL3 the same depth wheels, you'll see the gap shrink down to margin of f error.

I agree, get a nice set of wheels for the SL3, good tires, and let it fly. It might not be as stiff as the canyon, but the performance would be very similar

This was a great trip down memory lane - especially the wd40. I've been subscribed since the start, but don't cycle as much anymore. Pulling out my dad's old titanium frame bike built by Argos Cycles in Bristol still puts the biggest smile on my face, especially when you fly past the modern bikes 😉 Ride what makes you feel happiest 🙏

@jim bob, are they still doing well? I moved away from Bristol 20 years ago. My dad had two bikes built them (a steel framed and the titanium frame one I've got now). I remember him spending hours with them getting sized up and choosing the colour scheme. I also had a red road bike from them when I was about 13 in 'Ferrari Red'. Felt like the coolest thing ever!

Like many others, I suspect that a LOT of it is down to more drop on the Canyon and aero wheels. I would LOVE to see you setup the front end of the Specialized to mimic the drop / stack of the Canyon, and put some comparable aero wheels on it. Personally I guess that would be 80-85% of the difference...

I just went through TWO foot surgeries to correct some issues. Full right knee replacement is next in three months. I only race once a year at this point, and it's to 14,110'. Missing this year, obvi. Your video, the first one I've seen, is driving my broken, robot ass to excel to new levels. Your exuberant spirit and realistic banter warms my soul for a new season of training in 2024. Ill be 62 at racing age and wanna drop 30mins off my previous best climb. Great video. Love it that Si just loves riding his bikes. Mine is a Scott CR1SL which I built up in 2006 with 10 speed campy Record. Weighs 6.2 kg and still feels great. I don't feel the need for electronics, discs, tubeless or aero. My other bikes are metal and love riding them too

I started riding on a steel road bike with 5 speed friction shifters. Moved up through 7, 8 and finally 9 speed rear mechs. My Serotta CSI (lugged steel baby!) from the mid 1990s saw a lot of use before a series of life events in 2015 took me off the bike. I stopped paying attention to changes in bike technology at the time, but did watch GCN a bit now and then. As I turned 61 last year I decided to get back on the bike and started looking at the changes. It's amazing what has changed in just the last 5-10 years. Some of the changes are good (lower gears and gravel bikes) but others I don't see the need for.

My current road bike is a Tarmac Pro SL3 from the same era. Might not be as fancy as a new aero bike, but updated 11 speed Ultegra and weighing in at 7.5kg makes it a killer bike for me at a great price.

I feel like GCN missed one of the big talking point with modern aero bikes which is proprietary parts and the quasi impossibility of replacing them after a few years. If you'd break the seatpost for whatever reason on that specialized you'd be able to replace it in any old bike shop, same cannot be said with that Canyon.

A few years ago you got a bike that would easily last you for 10 or 20 years. Now with press fit bottom brackets, proprietary parts, constantly changing standards, a bike can be unrideable after just a few years.

I’ve been a fan since the beginning. The content has definitely made me a better biker and mechanic. Hard to believe 10 years have gone by. My S-Works is now my full time Zwift bike. It’s just as sweet and fast as always.

My "newest" race bike is 20 years old. My even older Giant TCR is so retro, it's aluminum, and has a quill stem. And then there is my 28 year old Bianchi , made with Columbus TSX ultra light.

ksyrium wheels were definitely at the top a decade+ agp, but as others commented, would love to have seen the 2013 with carbon aero wheels (even possibly tubulars) - which were used then, specially when racing. Still, loved this video!

Hi GCN, I own the exact same bike (colour and all - with some UCI worlds pinstriping on it). Its good to see the old SL3 still goes hard in your test. Mine only has SRAM 10 speed, but it never misses a beat.

Interesting information. And as an ex-chef I agree with the knife analogy. I still have my professional knife set I built up over time and the more expensive ones (Victorinox, Wusthof, Global) etc have a premium feel when using them and makes the job so much easier. My original unbranded knives from college are functionally great as they are very much fit for purpose, but lack the finesse of the nicer ones, in terms of blade weight balance, ergonomics and how sharp they stay.

meeh, just sharpen your knives often. My cheap IKEA knife is great with the tiny cheap easy knife sharpener thing IKEA also sells, knifes are overrated, but sharpening aint

If you keep your old knives sharp they are just as good as new ones

I need to clarify that premium knives feel more ergonomic and evenly weighted in the hand, stay sharper for longer and when you do sharpen them, are much easier to do so. Cheap knives also have a tendency to wear down quicker too as you need to remove more material to regain the sharp edge.

@@matt_acton-varian I think this is bad analogy since well - the both bikes were premium grade, the modern one currently is, the older spec was. What happend in cutlery industry in the 10-15 years? Premium japanese vg-10 15 year old knife is just as good as a very similar premium vg-10 steel japanese modern knife you can buy or order right now.

The older bikes are the ones that got us into cycling in the first place - Whether it's for commuting, family rides or just going to shops - it's what we fell in love with - the freedom cycling brings. The more serious you take it, the more important the shiny expensive bits seem, and yes, they do make you faster and feel proud, but whatever you ride, it's the love of cycling that's the most important thing.

I'm riding a 1972 Peugeot 10 spd, 27 X 1 1/8" and a 1984 Fuji Sagres 12 spd. 27 X 1 1/4". I love both bikes. Both are in fabulous shape, and I get a lot of compliments on them from other riders when I'm out. One of the best things is I bought the Peugeot about 20 years ago from the original owner for $10.00. It still had the factory pump and leather saddle. Just needed new tires. I bought the Fuji about 15 years ago at a garage sale with new tires for $15.00. They've both been great to ride, and easy to service. I'm not competing, so I like that I'm riding something unique.

My dad still uses and loves his 2012 Cervelo R3. He's gone through and slowly replaced a lot of stuff like his groupset, wheels, handlebars, etc. to make it even better than before. All I can say is if you love it, it works, and you can fix it, then keep on riding it until the wheels fall off.

I’d love Si to do a noise comparison test between the 2 bikes, and not just the gear shifts! A few weeks ago while out on my 30 year old winter hack it sounded like a tractor was coming up behind me. There was no indication of reducing speed so I pulled into the left and gritted my teeth for the anticipated close pass….only for a fellow cyclist to zoom past on an aero bike with deep carbon wheels (it might have been a Giant Propel). The noise was deafening 😂.

I'm riding a 2009 Scott CR-1 Team with the original box section aluminium rims (Aksium), mechanical 105 and cables all over the shop. It's a fine bike, that has seen me through the Fred twice, up Alpe d'Huez and around Lake Geneva, but I look forward to smashing all my PRs when I upgrade to something more current :D

Still use my 2011 Scott CR1, Also got a 2020 Addict Di2 Disc, which a great bike, but still use the CR1 a lot. It's still the same great bike that it was 12 years ago. Aged 73 now, I appreciate the Di2 and disc technology, but I only longer want to charge around everywhere and am happy to just enjoy every mile of my 6,000 to 10,000 miles per year.

Great video and fortuitous timing for me. Yesterday, I had just pulled off my Neo trainer and rode my 2009 backup road RED 10spd with the same Ksyrium SL anniversary wheels that Si has. I was amazed at how quiet and smooth it was, and making me rethink if I really need a new bike when my regular climber is already close to the UCI weight limit with eTap shifting & rim brakes. If I'm honest, the only real modern feature that I want badly enough to upgrade is the wide hookless low-pressure wheel combo. if I could get those wheels on either of my rim brake bikes, I'd be happy to ride them for another 10 years.

Riding my father's 1982 La Tour. It's been great to be able to fix and tune up everything myself. Yeah the bike is heavy, but as long as my lap times and power improve vs my own PRs then i'm happy. Granted i'm not doing races or anything, just racing myself.

I don't agree on the analogy with shifting. The mechanical clunck when shifting is far more pleasurable than the slightly quicker numb whir on electronic.

@@giodc8599 you get plenty of feedback through the bike but I'm accustomed to the feel through the lever itself. Obviously I don't have experience with wireless shifting so I can't speak on how it compares, but it's still a bit of a different feel I can imagine.

@@SonjaTheDork mechanical groups provide the feedback upon the lever throw and the cable pull, you can feel for the point in which the shift engages and disengages. it was a nice feeling. that feedback at those two points is lost with the electronic shifting as its all replaced with a paddle switch or button. you still definitely feel and hear the the chain being moved as it engages with the next cog or chainring. thats for sure.

Awesome video and how good is that knife analogy. I related to it in an instant as a seasoned amateur chef!! I have 11 bikes (3 ex-pro team issue from the teams themselves). 2 of them are; a 2004 Orbea Onix, also Campag though 10 speed, and a Madone from the Trek Segafredo men's squad. The knife analogy is spot on!

The biggest positive for me of the newer bike is the bigger tyre clearance. Biggest ever transformation in my riding was when I went from an Ultegra wheel with a 13.5mm gap within the rim and a 23mm tire within the rim to the largest I could reasonably fit in my '07 Cannondale, a HED Ardennes with 21 and change within the rim with a 25 or 27 tyre. So much safer and more secure to have a wider contact patch and if I could run 32 I would.

It's worth while having the latest and lightest technology if the rider is at their optimum weight and fitness level otherwise it is better just working on yourself.

I have an old bike that's pretty similar to this one! Recently upgraded to some aero carbon wheels and wow what a difference. I can only imagine the difference it would make being on that Canyon. Makes me want a new road bike now... thanks for that :P

I've been riding a 2000 Lemond. I've upgraded a few things to help with fit, but as mentioned before in the comments, the marginal benefits of an expensive bike upgrade are not worth the gains or the cost of doing so. I was just explaining what "ignorance is bliss" means to my son yesterday. Maybe this is a classic example of that. However, as I read the comments it seems the majority of people agree. Bike manufacturers and retailers want you to see or believe that you need the new and improved. You can't stop the technical innovation, but do we really need it for our enjoyment in the sport? GREAT point he mentioned in the video. Great video that sparks great conversation!

Comparing a bike with box section alloy rims to one with deep section carbon rims is criminal. There were deep section wheels back then. Also, who knows what condition those tires were after 10 years lol. There are so many content creators on youtube with higher standards than this. I was genuinely curious to see a fair comparison with power data and a few runs. Also, its obvious he's getting a draft benefit from the camera moto. Who knows how controlled that was across runs

As others have said, put the Aero wheels on the older bike, and the difference will be almost non-existent.

Thanks Si, yet another top notch video choc full of relevant/ every man content. I have a 2011 SL3 S-Works Tarmac w/ Zipp 404 Firestrike wheels, set up in an aggressive race position w/ SRAM Red 10 mech group set. I also have a 2017 Scott Foil 10 w/ Zipp 404’s, set up aggressively & SRAM Red 11 electronic group set. Both bikes are amazingly responsive, fast & fun to ride. I truly love riding both of them very much, cycling is a very important part of my mental & physical well being. I must say however, when out mixing it up on local group/ team ride & the pace & intensity increases, I am so glad I have the Scott Foil to ride. It feels stiffer, more responsive & although I’ve never been in a wind tunnel w/ either of my bikes, it feels like it cuts through the air w/ less effort & I get such a charge out of pushing myself to new limits! I will undoubtedly keep both these bikes but I am also looking forward to the day I buy a new bike w/ all the new tech & engineering benefits.

If you swapped in 60mm deep carbon wheels on the specialized sl3 I don't think there would be much difference,wheels are so important,my mate found that out when I sailed past him with his lightweight bike with shallow rims,and me on my 2014 specialized sl4 Roubaix blew him away,even now he's got 45mm wheels,when I hit 25mph he can't compete!😂

There would still be a measurable difference, it would just be smaller. Even my modestly aero Domane is over 0.5mph faster at a doodling 200w than my round tubed Seven from 2006...both bikes with shallow but wide rims and modern tires.

When it comes to beating your mate, so what? He'd be even slower with your bike and you'd be far faster with this. That's the point of aero bikes. They make individuals faster than they otherwise would be. Filippo Ganna would beat you on a mountain bike with you riding an aero bike. That doesn't mean that bike isn't slowing him down and the aero bike isn't making you faster than you used to be.

I'm still riding my 2010 TCR advanced Sl, and it rides like a dream. Changed the old ultegra out for new 105. Still feels great but I gotta admit my new BH EVO ultralight does go faster. Even with harder gearing it still climbs better. So something has changed. Also 28 is way more comfy than 23c

My first bike about 18 years ago was a Giant OCR1. They don't even make that bike anymore. It cost me about $1100. In 2020, I decided to pull the trigger on a Canyon Ultimate CFR with Force etap and disc brakes. As soon as I got on the bike the transition of power was mind blowing. The bike is unbelievably responsive. It is night and day!

Surprised the difference was so great. Biggest difference to me is the jump from 10 to 12 gears making constant cadence easier and the convenience of having electronic shifting that never fails me and always deliver the right gear. Love it!

@@hobbybaschtler7896 most of it is in tires/position/width of the handlebars and how low the stem can be. AND in what you're used to ride. Take a person who rides 10-12 y old spec with modern tires and wheels with race optimized postion vs another person on modern vastly overpriced stuff, let them ride with the same target power and the difference would be marginal if any. But they can't do that of course, the sponsors would not be happy about it.

I have a 16-17 year old Orbea Onyx that I've changed over to modern 105 shifters as my backup / travel / trainer bike vs. a 2 year old Pinarello Prince with Ultegra Di2. The Orbea is lighter, but feels very different. First, give me discs on descents every time. Second, wider, tubeless tires make a huge difference - I max out at 25 on my old bike. Finally, in a similar video, Chris Miller talked about the sensation of free speed on his newer bike. That describes it well to me. I still ride the Orbea and enjoy it, but definitely feel happier when I hop on the newer bike.

Saw quite a few old aero rim brake bikes at Tour Down Under. Throw latex tubes with grand prix 5000s and 35-40mm hoops on any old frame and any differences are going to be attributable only to rider position / front end drop.

I bought a 2011 Scott CR1 Team in Dec. 2011. Rim brake 105. I love that bike. I bought a 2020 Scott Addict Di2 disc which I also love. But, I still ride the CR1 nearly as much as the Addict. The Addict is sharper and crisper, but the CR1 still puts the same massive smile on my face every time that I ride it. And that's the reason why I ride bikes, not to race or get PR's on Strava, but just to enjoy every mile.

Well, although Si's bike once was an S-Works, in this state it better represents a (higher) mid-range. You should compare the old bike in full racing setup - top-end frame with period correct top-end tubular wheels and top-end groupset. Oh, and exactly same position. Also if you want to compare it to an Aeroad CFR, you should be comparing an S-Works Venge, Si's Tarmac (no S-Works anymore) would compare more fairly to an Ultimate CF SLX (if the new bike needs to be from Canyon).

Interesting points -- ease of serviceability really matters to most riders, so I'd rather have a bike that I can fix myself without having to resort to expert help and expensive tools. I also wonder if internal cable routing sometimes causes other problems and/or necessitates extra work when you need to fix something else like a handlebar or stem adjustment etc.

On a recent gcn tech video comparing lightweight and aero bikes, I said the bikes of the 2010s, before disc brakes and aero gains, were my dream. Seeing the Tarmac SL3, I saw the sort of bikes I used to lust after, and it was just amazing that a work of art was cleaned up and enjoyed the light again for the video!

@@gcn personally, both bikes are too aggressive for a casual cyclist like me, but if I had the flexibility, I would take the tarmac. It’s just pure function and ease of maintenance, that’s what I look for in bikes. Also, I’m not sure if the Canyon has any proprietary parts, but if it does, it’s an instant no from me anyway. Proprietary parts are one of my least favorite things in the world.

You mentioned the pressed bottom bracket on the new canyon and it got me thinking about trends and how the meta has shifted (and is always shifting) in road vs. mountain bikes. Threaded brackets are the latest and greatest in the MTB world and meanwhile the roadies are salivating over their new pressed beauties. If you look at my road and mountain bikes in my garage, both are about 12 or so years old, it's the exact opposite story.

When I started watching 10 years ago, I went from riding an old Peugeot PX10 that was Frankensteined to get me to work and school. I upgraded to a 1999 Raleigh R600 with 8sp 105 and it was it was like a spaceship in comparison! I recently got a 2010s era Scattante R670 with 10sp Ultegra and it’s another huge leap forward in tech! I’m constantly reminding myself that my bike is perfectly good, especially for my current skill level. I’ll NEVER stop wanting a carbon frame, electronic gear, hydraulic brake bike and a power meter. I just have to wait 10 years maybe :-)

3kmh is actually a huge improvement, I was expecting not more than 1kmh. 2022 TDF average speed was 42.03kph, I could not find it for 2012 but I doubt it was 3kmh less.

Comparing TDF speeds between years for casuals is like comparing a bike out of the packaging to how fast it went in the box when it was in transit.

Love this. My ride is currently a Look KG281/Dura Ace 9 that I got in 1999....then I had kids. I've kept it in good shape and it still rides great but I would love a new kitchen knife...once my last kid finishes school!!!!

It would be interesting to compare the avg power produced to cover the distance with the two bikes, so as to be able to notice how much actual power is wasted by using the older bike. I would have tested the old bike with the aero wheels. I suspect that is where the biggest gains are.

I’ve always upgraded my bike when new technologies came on the scene: Di2, Sram wireless etc. one of the best things is the advent of disc breakers which made it possible to have wider tires…used to run 25 mm and now I’m running 30 mm as my narrowest on my aero bike. As one gets older, the wider tires makes it that much more enjoyable to ride. 😊

The quickest bike I've ever had was a Ridley Noah, which I don't think is much slower than the current crop. It was awesome fun for the first 50K, but it would wear you out compared to all day on my gravel bike (comfy, but certainly not quite as fast).

Agree! I was usually top 10 in my local races. Bought a Ridley Noah in 2013 and won my state crit and state road race. Not to mention all the KOMs and PRs on Strava. Once you get it going it just keeps going, unlike my newer Scott Foil. It is stiff and you will take a beating on a long ride with rough pave.

Hi Si. I loved the vid. I've often wondered how fast you young racers take the col de Llandogo. Last time i took it up to Whitestone like you just have was last november and I took 29mins 27secs (now you know why I don't do Strava) but then my bike is about 25 years older and a lot cheaper than yours and I'm giving you about 30 years! I still love the riding. As the awful Armstrong used to say "it isn't just about the bike". All those years ago I used to manage 22mins to the top which means about 12 mins for that climb. I loved the vid, fascinating, and its fun trying to work out where you are. Hope I don't drive round that corner to find you stood in the road. Carry on with the good work.

Take out the wheels, helmet, clothing, rider position and aero handlebars out of the equation and the entire difference we are left with is 2 or 4 cables hidden in the front end and a couple of tubes on the frame shaped a bit different.

Gotta say the tire clearance is super strong argument for modern road bikes. Narrowest i ride these days is 28 mm. And yes i do love a good rim brake bike :)

Then don't ride frames that are very stiff and heavy if you need to offset it with tyres (because of total weight?). Any uphill and you lose 10-fold the amount of time gained.

I would be interested to know whether the new bike cost a bigger percentage of your salary ( if you were to have to pay for it ) than your older bike. It just seems that top end bikes seem even more expensive that they did back in the day.

You have to remember and include inflation.. I bought an brand new aluminum 700cc men's varsity Schwinn road bike back in 2007 my freshman year for 195$!! This same bike today, same set up brand new is 650$.. & get this, now present day I had the cassette, chain and the bars re wrapped with lizard skin ended up paying 220$! That's more than what I bought the whole bike for!
