"No one has a plan of action. Everyone hopes for the best" answers a resident of Nikopol when asked what she would do in the event of an emergency at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which the Russians occupy.
The city of Nikopol is located on the Kakhovsky Reservoir. On the other opposite bank of this reservoir, occupied by Russian armed forces, settlements of Vodyane, Kamianka-Dniprovska, and Enerhodar are located. Russians use Europe's largest nuclear plant as a cover. They know well that there will be no retaliation fire from the Ukrainian side - Since Ukrainians wouldn't risk damaging reactors of other nuclear power plant facilities with their artillery. The Russians shell the cities and villages of the Dnipropetrovsk region every day. However, the inhabitants of those settlements live not only under the threat of constant shelling - they still remember the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. And what if nuclear tragedy can happen again?
How Nikopol lives a few kilometers from the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant - see in the report of Diana Butsko and Mykhailo Meshcherinov.
