This video takes a look at the Portuguese empire from explorers like Henry the navigator and Vasco Da Gama to territorial expansion. For the sake of simplicity and time i refereed the early Spanish kingdoms of Castile and Aragon to Spain.

Impressive that a country that was barely established in 1128 was one of the major powers - with colonies all over the world - just 400 years later.

Flash Point History 1128 was pretty early for centralised power in Europe, that’s why they did it so well and early... They centralised and also united when fighting the moors

Diplomacy was what won the day, The thing is without Moorish aggression Spain(formerly known as the kingdom of leon) and portugual woulda ripped each other apart, depending on what Aragon did, Spain being the European superpower of the day probably would have won, but that's not how it went down. They put aside their differences and enacted the Reconquista(god bless them all) against Moorish aggression, which lasted centuries. Of course that's not to say the Christian Iberian's haven't had their few skirmishes, few and far between compared to the cooperation against the moors though if you ask me.

Let's not even get started with the long standing alliance with Britain too, just think how invaluable that must have been when they both colonized the new world.,

Because as for the Old World the British took the lion's share. So dumb the Portuguese that they paid for the Molucas to Charles V when it was already in their side of the line. So dumb was the King Manuel I of Portugal that stripped Magellan of its Portuguese nationality, and forced him to seek refuge in Spain!

Three brief notes on an outstanding video: - Portugal was under Spanish ruling for 60 years (1580-1640) not 80; - In 1640 Portugal elected John IV as king, not John VI; - Brazil became independent in 1822, not 1882. Obrigado and keep up the excellent work!

The Portuguese are mistaken that they were the first navigators, because they reached Ceuta in Africa, in 1415, and Spain to America in 1492. They do not know that the Spanish conquered Sicily in 1282, Athens 1311, base of Djerba, Tunisia, Africa in 1380, the Canary Islands in 1404. Even invasions of southern England in 1377, 1380-81 and 1411. The Spanish sailed successfully before, and reached Africa first. Spain arrived first in America, in 1492. Even in Brazil, in 1500. That year of 1492, Spain is on 3 continents, and Portugal on 2 (but without European territories). Until almost 1500, the Portuguese had only explored the west African coast, Ceuta 1415, Madeira and the Azores after 1427. The only time when Portugal overtakes Spain in exploration is in 1498, when it reached India, or rather Brazil after 1500 (then the Portuguese are on 4 continents. Spain on 3). During the period 1500-1520, Spain annexed the Netherlands and Franco-Condado in France in 1516 and the Spanish king became emperor of Germany in 1519, in addition to winning three wars against France in Italy (half of Italy is Spanish). The Portuguese created many colonies in Africa and Asia: Arabia, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Macau... But the world has 5 continents or 6. Spain is the first country to reach the Pacific Ocean and explore it. The Pacific Ocean is half of the earth. GLOBAL. Discoveries Guam and the Philippines. So Spain is on 5 continents. The Portuguese always say: but Spain had no territories in Asia, only the Philippines. Spain was in Taiwan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, China, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Kiribati, Taiti, Carolinas... Spanish map of Hawaii (16th century) and Spanish helmet in New Zealand (16th century). Spain discovered the geographical area of Antarctica in 1603. But there are previous stories about that cold region, in the archives of the 16th century. It is a parallel exploration of the two Iberian countries. The first world empire is the empire of Philip II of Spain, which conquered Portugal in 1580, integrating all the colonies and possessions of the two countries into a single empire, with lands in more than 100 countries on the 5 continents and all the seas. , simultaneously. Philip II was even king of England and Ireland.

Fun fact (not so funny in it's time xD): In 1890, the British Empire issued an ultimatum for Portugal to retreat from the newly colognised region between Angola and Mozambique (Portuguese colonies), a region now comprised of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, with the obvious threat of military retaliation if Portugal didn't comply. The king at the time, agreed to the demands. As a public response, an inspirational call-to-arms, the original version of the current national anthem was created. (translated, obviously:) Heroes of the sea, noble people, Valiant and immortal nation, Raise once again today, The splendor of Portugal! Among the haze of memory, Oh Fatherland, one feels the voice Of your distinguished forefathers, That shall lead you to victory! To arms, to arms! Over land, over sea, To arms, to arms! For the Fatherland, fight! Against the britons, march on, march on! .... Except, when the republic took it as the official anthem, "britons" was changed by cannons... It's more diplomatic, I guess. xD

STroB That's a good point of view, but doesn't apply to 5 million africans enslaved and the 300 years of slavery in Brazil. Do you think it justifies all that tragedy?? What a insensible mind. The past is the past, what is needed from today's people is respect.
@STroB
@STroB 6 років тому
It doesn't justify slavery, nothing does. I'm just saying we shouldn't look at history from just one point of view. We should learn with the bad, be glad with the good and acept it as it is. Civilization took time to evolve, it took time to learn and understand the humanity it self, it made lots of mistakes, as a child does when learning to walk. From the point of view of many people at the time, it was better to be a well treated slave (most hause slaves were) then a wildling having fights with the neighbour tribe. YES, it's a very flawed point of view, but it was what it was availabe to a civilization that young. What I'm saying is, we should all stop hating the past. It wont change anyway. Accept it as it is.

Gum Skyloard that’s a linguistic phenomenon which is too long to explain, but I have heard Portuguese people call it hispania, some People in Spain call it Iberia too but like it’s interchangeable, it’s an outside word. But it was called hispania for generations, before the introduction of Iberia. Telmo Prata, what you mean we attacked when everyone was weak? We conquered the world when everyone looked down at us, but it’s okay, I often find Portuguese people like you, rather being United they want to divide us. I mean if I wanted to be a dickhead, I could really make you shut up. But the glory of Spain, I believe is the glory of hispania, both Portugal and Spain, and that we defended our home together, even when we quarrelled. Brothers fight within themselves but they are still brothers. If you still think how you do, well I can’t help you, there’s no need to be jealous of the achievements of spain and believe the lies of others that are equally jealous. There is no need to be jealous, we share the achievements with Portugal and admire your achievements. Regardless, whether it’s hispania or Iberia, the history is of our people, we are the same people, different culture and language but by blood we are the same. And I prefer to call it hispania, if you want to call it Iberia, up to you, we are brothers regardless.

Good job, one note: Another reason they opted not to trade over land is because it was so much more expensive. Some sources put the ratio at 10:1 or 15:1. Since it cost 15x more to go over land, it made economic sense to take a detour of 5x the normal distance.

Actually Brazil and Portugal formed the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil in 1808 , when Napoleon invaded Hiberian peninsula and the royal portuguese family moved to Rio de Janeiro where the capital of the Empire was established. In 1815 king D.John VI was crowned in Rio de Janeiro . So the Monarchy kept Brazil united before and after independence when our first Emperor , D Pedro I was crowned.

Javier Navarro Fornês, ahah not even in your wildest dreams. The first circumnavigation of the world was made by the Portuguese Fernão de Magalhães (the Basque Elcano just followed orders after Magalhães died and btw used the routes discovered by Portugal), the Pacific Ocean was also named after Portugal. America was also discovered by Portugal (João Vaz Corte-Real), Columbus was Portuguese, as proved by scientific investigation (read Manuel Rosa, biggest expert on Columbus and teacher in the US). Spain didn't even exist at that time. You can ask everyone everywhere about the greatest explorers of all time...the answer will always be the Portuguese.
@luismarques9280
@luismarques9280 5 років тому
Javier Navarro Fornés The 1st circumnavigation was lead by a Portuguese sailor that we all know, Magellan. Spanish finished it because Magellan was killed, they learned with Magellean all the skills. The Spanish did not discovered America. The vikings were there long before and the Portuguese discoverd 1st the Canada, Newfounfland, several years before the Spanish reach America. The Portuguese knew America before the Spanish thats why the line dividing the world between Portugal and Spain, the Treaty of Tordesillas, passes right next to Brasil. Portuguese didn´t care about America at that time, the objective was the spice world, India. Columbus was a joke because we was trying to reach India folowing the wrong path, lol. Has i said Portuguese were the Nasa of those times and were the 1st to start the age of discoveries, not Spain. The spanish were so bad at sea that they didn´t managed to win England despite of the advantage in the munber of ships with the invencible armada. Guess who survived with the least damaged ships, the Portuguese....Things would be diferent if Portugueses were leading the armada...

people nowadays often see Portugal as some sort of irrelevant second grade post empire country but they forget that Portugal was such a small nation we had 4 times less the man power of Spain to give you an example, our population at that time was approximately the same of Sweden and Norway combined together (around 1 million) but instead of turning into mere coastal city raiders (the vikings) we we able to do so much more and spread our civilization to every continent in the world making our language one of the most spoken in the world, and our footprint will always be in human history books. So if you ask me if I'm proud to be portuguese, yeah I'm pretty proud of the accomplishment my ancestors did in the past but I'm not very proud about how the current state of my country is in the present

It is not a mistake at all. Early Portuguese maps of Brazil show a lot of Araucaria trees that were probably chopped down to build ships and houses due to it's wood quality. The Coconut trees , Mango trees , Sugar cane , a lot of wood trees , Coffee trees , Acacia trees , etc were all introduced in Brazil by the Portuguese , not to mention species that had no commercial value but the seeds were , accidentally , aboard the ships. Brazil flora and fauna like in the rest of the world were very different at those days. Before the Portuguese and Spanish arrival the Indians had never seen a Coconut or a Mango and Europeans had never seen a Tomato or a Potato.

Dahmer, "he abdicated and fled to portugal to fight against his own brother (michel I) for the portuguese crown" Just a small misconception, it wasn't only a fight for the Portuguese crown, it was a civil war between absolutism and liberalism. There are some inaccuracies in this video: the main motivation for exploration in the early 15th century was to dominate the lucrative spice trade not so much gold and slavery. Gold was discovered later and the slave trade only kicked off in the late 16th century. The 1640 restoration was led by John IV, not John VI which is the one shown in the video. Brazil became independent in 1822 not 1882.
@Fil13895

Nice video. Just a few things: Brazil became an officially independent state (as a Monarchy) in 1822 under Emperor Peter I (King John VI’s son), yes. But in 1808, King John VI of Portugal fled Portugal due to the napoleonic wars, and Rio de Janeiro became the capital of what would become known as the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. So, technically Portugal was the first and only european empire ever to have its capital not only outside of its territory, but inside its biggest colony, which in turn, made Brazil officially not a colony anymore. When John VI was called back to Portugal after Napoleon was defeated, Brazil was supposed to be downgraded back to the status of colony, which was one of the biggest kick starters for our independence.

Prior to the Union, Portugal had existed for more than 400 years, while artificial and doomed Spain was only created by losing Castile in 19th century. Actually, Portugal allowed the foundation of Spain with some Portuguese kings marrying some queens of neighboring kingdoms.
