Subaru started as a small scrappy Japanese brand, brought to the states by a couple of American businessmen in the 1960s, and was quickly met with ridicule. But it persisted, and over the decades has gone from being a small niche player to one of the most successful brands in America.
Subaru has weathered economic recessions far better than much larger competitors, and it is positioned near the top of consumer satisfaction surveys. But the ever-changing auto market presents some challenges for them, and they need to adapt to keep up.
When Subaru entered the United States in the 1960s it was panned by critics, and actually advertised its own cheap ugliness.
Over the next several decades it would become a highly successful brand through a combination of offbeat but practical cars and a relentless focus on understanding its own customers.
The scrappy brand enjoyed a 93-month sales increase streak that ended in 2019, and it has found ways to survive during the coronavirus pandemic.
But it is not without challenges. The intense demand for its vehicles has at times brought growing pains -- quality issues and recalls gave led to an unusual quarterly loss in 2018.
There is also pressure on the company, like all automakers, to develop some kind of electrification strategy. Subaru does have a partnership with the much larger Japanese automaker Toyota, which is expected to soon produce an electric vehicle jointly made by the two companies.

They don't listen to problems like head gaskets, oil consumption, brake problems ( Brembo brakes on BRZ ), do your research before making bonehead statements like they "listen 100% to their customers." That statement is absolutely unequivocally wrong. And ask me how I know...personal experience over the last 40 years. And in spite of all of that, I still like them and own 3 currently and plan to drive them until they cannot be fixed. But I will never ever buy another new one, that is for certain.

@@thomaswomack3888 - I'm in line to buy my first Subaru. I've heard about the head gasket problems and I did a search. The main years that applied to was 1996-2004. I agree an eight year period is ridiculous especially considering it was a problem with pretty much just one of their engines. All the rest were fine. Also note that the last year that the head gasket issue was problematic was 2004. That's 18 model years ago so it's hardly a valid complaint these days. As for oil consumption and brake issues? Those are hardly exclusive to Subaru. I find it interesting that you still drive them and own more than one, given the attitude of your response. In a way, you are proof as to why they're still so popular in spite of your complaints about them. ;-)

My wife and I decided to buy a small SUV 9 years ago. We may not have even thought about a Subaru but one of her friends recommended them. We drove the Forester against the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CRV. We were shocked, the Forester blew the other two away in every aspect - interior space, quality of ride, engine power, handling, etc. And safety-wise, it was one of only 2 vehicles at the time that passed the then-new offset frontal collision test. Hasn't given us any trouble. Totally sold on this brand.

The new ones with CVT’s aren’t. Literally are none of those. however, the old ones are! Just keep it 2013 or older. My 2015 Subaru Forester XT has its lower control arm bushings fail at 40k miles. This is just from occasional fire roads. This is a widespread issue that we all faced. Not rugged. Reliable? The CVT died at 60K miles. Not as wide spread as the bushing issue, but pretty much means these transmissions simply cannot go past around the 250K mile mark. Their highest mile CVT subaru was from a guy that escorted “wide load” trucks. He put on 750k mile on his Outback 2.5, but he had his CVT replaced every 250k miles which is a far cry from the 1 million mile Toyota Tundra, or the 500k miles on the older Subarus with the 4EAT transmission.

Simple: they make practical cars. Most Subarus blur the line between hatchback, wagon, and SUV. It gives you plenty of cargo space and passenger room without guzzling gas or taking up loads of space. They're also one of the only companies to make AWD standard. If you live somewhere with a lot of snow and can't afford to buy a big premium package SUV, you'll probably wind up with an Impreza. They last forever, too, not to mention that they're actually enjoyable to drive.

The 2017 which had build quality issues, I work in radar and when I drove that outback near a radar, it would just die! It took Subaru of America to make the dealer to even check it out. They could not find the issue. I offered to drive the car by a local radar with their OBD II tool. They declined. When we got the notice from Subaru that they were extending the CVT drive train warranty to 10 years, I traded it in for a 2019 Outback 3.6r Limited. Uh........ you can turn off lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and of course use standard cruise contol instead of adaptive cruise (although I cant imagine why one would want to do so, adaptive cruise in fantastic). The only part of Eyesight that you cant disable manually is the forward collision warning.

For me the most important elements of the car are the steering weel feedback with a good chasis, the WRX already has both but I would like it more with a shorter wheelbase like the new Yaris

I had 2 Subarus. WRX and Legacy GT. Both cars were stellar performers for me. Always gave me confidence in its dynamics and fun of the drive. Even in harsh conditions my Legacy GT did very well. Very impressed with what was possible with these cars. Subaru will always be in my Lexicon of what AWD is about, and the confidence it gives along with the performance.

You don’t know what your talking about. The notorious head gaskets problems ended over 10 years ago. It’s amazing how someone can reiterate a problem without considering the problem no longer exists.
