Elon Musk announced that Tesla was getting into the energy business in 2015 and now it’s betting that it will become increasingly important for the company. In 2020, it surpassed 3 gigawatt hours of energy storage deployments in a single year, largely due to the popularity of Megapack, its utility-scale battery product. CNBC visited PG&E’s Tesla Megapack site in Moss Landing, California and learned why energy storage systems like Tesla’s could be everywhere in a future of renewable power.

I'm in the Vanadium redox flow battery industry, and I can tell you that lithium is not a viable option for long duration energy storage. Lithium batteries are best suited for short-term storage, because the charge they hold dissipates over time. To store sufficient energy for months or years would require many batteries, which is too expensive to be a feasible option. Flow batteries are a better option for long duration storage. Flow batteries have been proven in the field that they are feasible for long duration storage, thousands of cycles, minimal degradation, and no limitations on depth of discharge.

I want Vanadium flow batteries to work, but LFP Batteries are cheaper than all flow batteries in terms of $/kWh. So far nobody is buying redox flow batteries at massive scale, their market penetration is very low. Certainly, the charge Li ion batteries hold dissipates over time, but it's still cheaper in the long run. How sustainable is Vanadium, how is this sourced? I don't know the answer, but I know Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries have the ability to scale easily. There is no perfect solution, but LFP for grid storage looks more economical.

I almost gave up on CNBC reportage always very adverse to Tesla, even when by sensible judgement something good should have been said or written. Same for your hand picked hosts specifically chosen because of known antagonists and predatory short specialists hell bent to destroy Tesla. I hope this is the very first reportage of many to follow, not to necessarily promote Tesla business, but to fairly present true unbiased reporting. On the other hand you have no choice unless you desire to go the way of CNN with a vertical loss of viewers, well on the way to belly up alley, because of their well known Fake News reporting. But People, the vast majority are not as dumb as CNN political anti American reporting presumed, and are and will be heavily punished, by the people they tried to misinform. Thanks CNBC this is the only route worth following and the vast majority of viewers will reward you for your integrity and decent reporting, which it is by far a much better alternative than being hated. In case you have missed what Tesla is all about, his cars are under every parameter of comparison with other EV producers, the very best in the market. But please do some reporting and let the world know why their cars are of such an high degree of efficiency, reliability and convenience, which are the reasons why they are the EV world sales leaders.

You heard right, Tesla is becoming a battery brand of its own producing its own proprietary cell called the tabless dry battery electrode 4680 cell. The game has changed. Within 18 months from now Tesla’s factories will be spitting out its own battery product at scale and will match the output of its current suppliers at Panasonic and LG Chem. Good doc, well researched and presented. Tesla is really getting a choke hold on the electric business with cars and batteries. But in case anybody thinks that this is a clean source of energy consider the chemical waste that will ensue after the batteries are depleted. Effective recycling is the only way to get this industry going in a sustainable manner. Lithium batteries obviously will be replaced by other types as the supply of the raw material is already limited.

I think the grid as a concept is outdated. We should be moving toward decentralized power sharing networks instead, where every house has solar/wind/batteries and shares power with everyone around them.
@yvrelna
@yvrelna 2 роки тому
The grid is a decentralized power sharing network. In many countries, power producers, energy storage companies, and retail utility companies in the grid buy and sell power automatically at market rate through their power grid. The grid were originally built with utility power producers because the technology involved in most forms of power generation massively benefit from economy of scale. Producing power using home scale diesel/steam engines simply weren't economically or environmentally competitive to the large steam turbines they had on utility scale power plants. With renewables, that changed a bit, and home generation can be competitive, and in some countries it's now possible for home owners with solar panels to own a home device that can allow them to automatically buy and sell their excess power generation to the grid at market price, just like the large scale utilities have always been able to.

Energy Storage methods are the next step before we can go fully solar and wind. Without a way to store the energy, then as the video states, after the sun goes down or wind dies down, you have to find a new source for energy. If Tesla Energy can scale up well enough, they can become a micro-utility that provides clean energy AFTER the sun sets or wind stops. Definitely super exciting for the future of America. It will be vital to stay a leader in green energy. This is one of the final hurdles. Any place that has green energy can tell you this is a problem. I read that in CA, they generate so much solar that they PAY another state to accept that energy because they have no ways to store or use it all during peak hours. If these batteries are integrated into the grid, we could possibly stop seeing blackouts due to demand AND the energy will be clean. Amazing.

@@jonathanao6567 No they're not an ETF. Tesla is just one company, and not diversified in the same sense that an ETF would be. If you're invested only in Tesla, Musk could be sending one weird overnight tweet and their stock prices will go haywire and wipe out your entire investment portfolio. What they are is a conglomerate: "a corporation that is made of a number of different, sometimes unrelated businesses". They're not unique to diversify their business in this respect, there are many bigger, more diversified conglomerates that you probably already heard of. Samsung, for example, you most likely know about them as mobile phone and electronic manufacturers, but the conglomerate also runs life insurance, ship building, constructions, theme parks, hotels and resorts, biopharmaceutical, etc. Tesla is comparatively much less diversified than many of these other more veteran conglomerates. Moreover, a very large part of Tesla's businesses are centred around batteries, particularly lithium batteries, which means that they're vulnerable to disruptions in that sector.

My view is that the entire electric grid has to be a world wide effort first of all, in the sense that if it’s night where you are it’s daytime in another time zone, no wind but full wind in another area... As long as it’s entirely renewable, no mining. Zero impact or it’s always going to come down to missing resources. Resources don’t just appear out of thin air...

@CL-gq3no 2 роки тому
Not really. He is saying that most new energy projects cost money to operate and those costs have to be passed on to consumers. This is especially true of fossil fuels because it is based on non-stop consumption. Tesla's grid battery storage is one of the rare products that actually pays for itself (within a couple of years in some large scale installs) because it allows energy to be captured that would otherwise be wasted. It also makes peaker plants obsolete which are very inefficient and expensive.

@CL-gq3no
@CL-gq3no 2 роки тому
@@HH-le1vi, That is only true for fossil fuel power generation. Renewables generate power when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining even. While these grid battery storage systems CAN be used to smooth out fossil fuel sources with demand, they really shine for capturing the full potential of renewable energy sources that would otherwise be wasted because they don't align with demand. This allows more fossil fuel energy to be offset somewhere else on the grid. Also, when I say that fossil fuel energy is based on "constant consumption," I don't mean they consume at a constant rate. What I mean is those systems CONSUME a finite resource to make energy whereas renewables use resources to PRODUCE a product that in turn generates energy. Consumption based processes get more expensive over time. Production based processes get cheaper as production is scaled up. The point being that fossil fuels are now more expensive than renewables for new energy installs. For all of those reasons grid battery storage can pay for itself pretty quickly.
