Yup I learned that yesterday from a great tutorial on how to make an item vending machine, where U can configure the item amount and currency amount by using books on lectern, the tutorial took me almost an hour to follow but it was worth it, I learned a lot from it and I enjoy Minecraft Redstone more now

He made a new game called RGB in season 6 of Hermitcraft, while everyone else was participating in Demise(aka, the dark time). Comparators are mostly useful as a way to measure the state of other blocks, such as the number of items in an inventory or the position of a item frame. The analog math is not often used that much, but there are some kind of useful things it can do (e.g. extending an analog wire, adding signals or remembering a signal). If you put it in subtract mode and put in a max-strength signal you can also force the output to be zero, which is useful for logic gates.

as with most things redstone, comparators do much more than shown here, but trying to replicate the examples here and then trying to use them in simple builds is a good way to learn advanced fancy redstone may be complex and complicated, but basic redstone is pretty easy once you've built a few things and found out how best to understand it! ^-^

@@duoduos9221 When explained like this it is, I've been years playing and I had never understood comparators before. Also the complexity of the redstone system in general has to do with the interaction of many different components from which the comparator is just one. So yes, it is complicated.

I find it useful for things like timers, if i want something to go off after 5 days then i have a daylight sensor move 1 object into a chest each night, until on the 5th day theres 5 items in the chest which the comparator sees and gives it enough strength to activate whatever I wanted to get triggered

Same problem applies to logic gates and how to apply them in programming or circuitry.

One idea could be a race against time where you need to beat it in let's say 60 seconds and if you do, a redstone door opens. Using a comparator, you could make it so when the timer is past 60 seconds a mechanism (eg. Piston pushing a Redstone block) would send a signal to the side of the comparator in either its default (comparing) mode or subtracting mode as long as it outputs a higher signal strength than the one to open the door. Obviously it'll be more complicated than just that (eg. Making it so the door stays open after 60 seconds, making a clock, sending redstone signals vertically) but this is just an idea for how it can be used.
