"Let's repaint the viburnum green!", "So do we have to cut down all the red roses?", "Then we'll have to ban the rainbow." These and similar arguments are given by the residents of the city of Chervonograd in the Lviv region, who categorically disagree with the recommendation of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance regarding the renaming of the city.
Historians' arguments here are obvious: the name of the city, which the Soviet authorities renamed from Kristinopol to Chervonograd, contains the symbolism of Russian imperial policy. Namely, the red totalitarian regime and the flag of the USSR.
By April 27, the Verkhovna Rada must vote on new names for settlements, the names of which fall under the Law of Ukraine "On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy."
According to the law, until January 27, communities themselves could decide on a new name for their locality and submit this proposal for a vote to the Verkhovna Rada. However, residents of Chervonograd voted again for Chervonograd at public meetings and in electronic format. Therefore, the specialized parliamentary committee set about choosing a new toponym. They agreed on the name "Sheptytskyi", which was a surprise even for those residents of Chervonograd who were supporters of the renaming and wanted the return of the historical name "Krystynopil". The same name was recommended by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.
What are the current moods in Chervonograd, how do people plan to continue fighting against the renaming, what are they saying about a possible new name for the local monastery, where Andrey Sheptytskyi took monastic vows, and what was promised to the citizens of Chervonograd by People's Deputy Yury Kamelchuk - see in the report of hromadske correspondent Maryana Pietsukh.
