GAF Energy is taking on Tesla with the release of its new solar shingles. While the concept of solar shingles that blend in seamlessly with a regular roof has been around for decades, higher costs and lower efficiency and reliability as compared with traditional solar panels have prevented the product from taking off. But GAF Energy is the sister company to GAF, one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the world. And it believes that its deep ties to the roofing industry have allowed it to design a cost-competitive solar roof product that’s ready for the masses.
CLARIFICATION 1/5/22: At 11:02 in the video, there is a comparison made that needs clarification. The video states, “Given the GAF shingle’s dimensions and its 45 watt rating, it would produce, at maximum, 5.96 watts per square foot.” However, because of the way GAF Energy’s shingles overlap on the roof, 56% of each shingle is made up of non-solar material. If you consider the efficiency of only the active solar cells, GAF Energy's shingle produces 14.29 watts per square foot, which the company says would be on par with the efficiency of Tesla’s shingle.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ukposts.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

I bought a new home in the desert. The builder put solar on and it was included in the price of the home. I upgraded another 3K dollars. My electric bill was 15 dollars per month in the summer running an air conditioner. So happy with my solar panels. I think the ones GAF Energy have look good. In the long run, I hope they do really well. They may want to build an alliance with home builders in states where solar is mandated on all new builds.

Here's why I could prefer these over panels. I don't want the additional perforations from rack mounts. The chance of leaks with mounts is higher than without them. Yes, "just get a good installer" can improve chances, but it's not a guarantee. And having known of cases locally of some pretty bad leaks from rack mounts (yes, I know many don't have problems) I would very much be interested in a product that goes on the decking like standard shingles if they have no higher chance of leaks than standard shingles. The first job of any roof is to keep out the elements. Solar is secondary. Not willing to compromise one whit on the primary purpose of a roof for any secondary function.

I think you're wrong at 11:01. You're factoring in the entire panel even though most of the top part of it is covered up by the previous panel. Looking at the man holding the panel at 11:21, we can determine that the height of the actual photovoltaic portion is less than half, so about 7 inches, and the width needs to have about 3 inches removed from the right side. Rough math shows that the panel would produce about 10.1 watts of power/sq. ft and not ~6 watts.

The problem for GAF is they are targetting composite shingle roofs customers. And composite shingle roofs are relatively cheap compared to alternatives like tile. Tesla targeted homes with tile roofs which are expensive with their SolarRoof product. The price of our Solar Roof was less than the price of a replacement tile roof with solar panels.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 роки тому
Asphalt shingles are used in over 80% of US roofing projects, so I fail to see how this is a problem for GAF... They're targeting what most of us use. Tiles are used in ~5% of US roofs. What you're basically saying is that Tesla's targeting wealthy people. Plus, I'd honestly be shocked if 90%+ of the people buying the Tesla solar roof aren't Tesla shareholders. Why someone would risk their own homes for another one of Musk's experiments is beyond me. The really silly thing is that Tesla's expensive solar roof products are getting larger subsidies simply for the fact that they cost more. Why the subsidy isn't based on output, rather than a set percentage on cost is anyone's guess. Corruption sounds about right though. So to you my friend, I say I'm glad I could help you pay for that fancy new roof.

The 'faux' tiles were the mistake. The connections in a larger solar panel connected to others can be complex and expensive. It is more than just 'line in, line out.' Long vinyl panels similar in shape and installation as sheet metal would not only simplify these connections and lower price, but roofing companies would already be familiar with most of the install.

The issue with this is that the consumer assumes all the risk. I as a homeowner would like to know pricing, what's the warranty, does it require a maintenance contract. Also in Florida how will it effect my Insurance premium as it will be very costly to replace should a hurricane rip off the roof or damage. There are still roofs in Miami with tarps that were damaged in 2018 from hurricane Irma so I could just imagine the delay with this new technology. This is also not taking into consideration the current supply chain shortages that's impacting all industries.

With the 2023 Inflation reduction act, 30% can be claimed on the total price. Normally only the solar part has the tax credit but since the roofing is integrated, i.e. it can’t be separated, the total cost gets the tax credit. So, very beneficial for people who need to replace roof.

I think that the HOA is limited on how it can restrict solar. If your house has direct sun from the street view, I don't think the HOA can disallow the panels. You would have to have a report of some sort that shows that you get most of your sunlight from the street side. My neighborhood has an HOA, and while most homes don't have street view panels, there are a few that do...and the main reason is probably that it faces the direction of most sunlight.

It is starting to take off because it is what happens when large businesses (Tesla) in the US lobby to save the environment with all eletric cars and trucks. It is thes best way to make money. Own solar, eletric cars, power bank, smart phones, energy farms, etc. You basically have a monopoly on where the money goes (Tesla's pocket). Also it is a late 1800s tech. It is a cheaper alternative that poor people can afford. Easier infrastructure to set up. While more developed nations like in Europe made mass infrastructure changes to include hydrogen. That includes underground pipes and refuel stations. Hydrogen can also be used to generate power, etc. They can also go beyond cars and trucks. They can fuel planes, jets, cargo ships, etc. While other nations push for a stronger future, the US is stuck in the late 1800s. Don't forget batteries always lose their charge. So you will have to pay for replacement and service. Something the news will not highlight over and over again. Yeah you can buy solar... sounds good to go eletric. but it pays... in what 15+ years depending on your system. While your normal monthly eletric bill is around $100+ a month. You will have to wait and by then you will have to purchase replacement solar panels and the cycle begins all over again. Save the environment? The world's giant ICE cube 😅 has been melting since the beginning of human life. But yeah. We should change since it is melting faster than usual, but for a better alternative like hydrogen. More applications to go beyond just cars and trucks.

At the time the solar roof cost was 1/3 of the house value.

You need to compare the cost of the roof + PV to the Tesla solar roof, not just the roof alone. Second of all asphalt shingles are the cheapest product on the market, there are far more expensive roofing products. Asphalt shingles also have a shorter life than a Tesla solar roof, so that also has to be factored in. Lastly most Tesla roofs don't cost $110k. It's like saying why is a Porsche is so expensive compared to a Chevy when both take you from A to B.
