Lanternfish might look unremarkable at first but they are one of the most important fish in the ocean - and for more than just one reason. Here's why.

Fishing boat captains in Asia, are not known for restraint!
@georgemckenna462
@georgemckenna462 3 роки тому
They know nothing of the life span of these fish or the globally catastrophic consequences of tampering with there defence mechanism. Yet the narrator is already to refer to them as an untapped resource. Remember the collapse of the Atlantic Cod population that they said, "was not possible"? WAKE UP!!! These colonies are what is keeping us from extinction. LEAVE THEM ALONE.
@57thorns
@57thorns 3 роки тому
@@georgemckenna462 It is even worse: These fish are the basis for the food chains that gives us the current food fish (which we managed to fish to extinction). That they only represent between 10 and 50 times the amount we fish yearly already is not promising, given that these fish are not directly meant for human consumption, but as feed for livestock (mostly fish, sometimes chicken) creating another barrier of a factor somewhere between 2 and 10. And we do not know how fast these reproduce. The whole system is in balance (an unstable balance most likely, but still) and we do not have to remove all of them to kil the population, just a large enough fraction of their reproductive capacity for the whole thing to collapse.
@LuminaNinetales
@LuminaNinetales 3 роки тому
@@57thorns Considering the huge mass of fish, if we start fishing them like we fish normal fish, I'm pretty sure they won't go extinct. They are really numerous and fishing them could contribute to reconstruct other species numbers to normal amounts. Of course you need to study them first to not disturb their breeding mechanism or stuff like that, but anyway, looking at the graphics, it just looks like you were feeding on insects all of a sudden to help the fauna heal and reconstruct. Eating them wouldn't be a bad idea. The only bad idea is doing it to large, harmful amounts.

Wouldn't a superlative been a better choice than just a insert a word here that's the highest order of any adjective. Because sure Superlative can be used on it's own, however saying that something is superlative, aka of the highest quality or degree, is quite obnoxious because you can easily think of as many negative superlatives, So for example Worst is an excellent superlative, after all using a similar word such as excellent, magnificent or outstanding would be a lot more normal and you wouldn't seem like a prick. @@kayleighgilman5641 because, overexploitation of anything is scientifically wrong. It will bring about some unnatural imbalance that we really have no idea about. Since we know so little the mesopelagic zone, it'll be simply foolish to play with such fire. For example if you over produce a single crop for decades, a certain amount of minerals from the soil depletes over time. Hence people came up with the idea of crop cycle techniques. Also farming lantern fishes will be a task next of impossible at the moment as they need suitable environment to breed, mate and reproduce. I don't know if humans will be willing to build an artificial facility that will replicate the deep mesopelagic zones of the ocean to a T. Even if we build such habitat, the cost would be so immense that multiple countries would need to partake in the such humungous project.

Astoundingly high quality production-- we subscribed immediately. The broad sweep of both data and reasonable inferences make this a front-row attraction for anybody who wants to know why we are in trouble with our environment. Only in the past 50 years has the data collection process reached the point we can describe massive patterns around the globe. These are the underpinnings and foundations of what we call "normal" earth phenomena, from local weather to migration and extinction of entire species. All of these patterns are defined by actual data, not interesting/alarming speculations. The narrative is a model of clarity, and graphics are superb.
