This video shows how to control higher voltage devices from Arduino.
you will find out how to control 12 led with both relay and a transistor.
I hope you would find it useful.
The code and a list of components can be found here:

@@marios_ideas i have an application where there is a relay and a fuse to a 12V load (only 1) I was considering using a relay module and ditching the fuse (is this safe or a relay module does not replace a single oldschool automotive relay + fuse)? I then found out about mosfet modules that are much more compact, now could these be a direct replacement to my old fuse relay combo?

Thank you for the video! Can I use the same transistor setup to bump Arduino serial TX UART signal from 5V to 12V? I have a device that is controlled by UART on 12V and want to control is from Arduino. I only need 1 way communication (from Arduino to 12V device) so only TX wire/signal needs bumping to 12V. Can I use the same setup as shown in 8:54 by simply connecting yellow wire to arduino serial TX? The only thing I'm wondering about is if transistors are ok being "on" (12v flowing through it) all the time? Since UART signal idles in high state.

@Hangs4Fun 3 місяці тому
when I looked back through my electronics stash and specifically transistors in the MOSFET category, I do have a similar one, the IRFZ44N. From what I can tell the only diff between IRFZ44N and the IRLZ44N you suggested, is that the IRFZ44N is 49Amp and the IRLZ44N is 47Amp, otherwise they are both 55v. That being said, as I dug deeper, this is what I found on those two. "The IRLZ44N is a Logic level Mosfet with a very low gate threshold voltage of 5V, meaning the MOSFET can be fully turned on with just 5V on its gate pin which avoids the need for a driver circuit. The IRFZ44N on the other hand requires a gate driver circuit if the MOSFET has to be turned on completely using a microcontroller like Arduino. However it does turn on partially with direct 5V form a I/O pin, but the output drain current will be limited." Therefore, unless you have a gate driver circuit, do not use the IRFZ44N, the IRLZ44N you suggested is correct. I found them for about $1 each on Amazon (though you have to buy 10). Hopefully this helps someone

@marios_ideas

Look at the description on the relay. E.g look at this link allegro.pl/oferta/przekaznik-1-kanalowy-wysoki-niski-h-l-5v-arduino-13614098678 . The relay in that link is 5v one. Meaning that the signal to control the circuit will be 5 v and the circuits that you can control are up to 10A 220VC or 10A 30V DC. So if you want to control your solenoid from Arduino i has to be a 5v one

Can you explain N vs. P channel mofet? I had to use a P channel mosfet for providing 12V to an accessory signal for an inverter I have and I don’t really understand why, N channel did not work.

I have a question about my project if you would be so kind to help Using an Arduino and a 11.1 lypo battery the power to the Arduino has a power regulator from the battery set to 5v I also have two 12v transistor modules so i can run two 12v solenoids that switch on and off at 20ms s o very fast also i have a switch. the problem is i want the Arduino to be on running its code and then using the switch to activate the solenoids is that when the arduino is powered up the solenoids are running/working even when the switch is Off but if i have seperate battery to the Arduino and another to the solenoids modules all is ok, but i want to just use one battery without creating a loop Any one with idea :)

I don't see your exact circuit so difficult. I would need to see if I can recreate the problem. I to anderstand I I took 12 v power supply and power arduino with it through VIN pin and GND pin and then also power a separate circuit in which e.g. magnetic lock is connected and the circuit has a transistor in it with gate pin controlled by one of arduino pins that would recreate the setup you have right?

I think they were made for infrequent switch operations. If you want to do something with high frequency then go MOSFET

@@marios_ideas I was thinking of using it for a blinker (like indicator on a laydown bike) As it would make the machanical sound I thought it'd be kinda fitting. It won't be switching constantly, just a couple of times every so often when turning.

Can a 5V relay be used in a similar manner with a 12V power source (like a car battery) to power an LED bar? I tried this and ended up frying my arduino. For some reason as soon as I connected the power source, the circuit seemed to bypass the relay and completed, turning on the electronics (which worked fine) but ended up messing up the arduino.
@marios_ideas
@marios_ideas Рік тому
Not very likely as with relay the 5v and 12v circuits are isolated. The 12 v circuit is closed and opened using magnetic coil. Maybe your relay was somehow damaged. Was the power source for Arduino 5V?

@@marios_ideas I used a 9V battery to power the arduino and after inspection it turns out the arduino is still working properly which is good. I had the arduino programmed to control different relays using a button, which would activate depending on how many times the button was pressed, with the default state being all relay channels off. Upon further inspection of my circuit, I found that my relay DC in and DC out ports were not connected to the arduino at all. Could something like this result in the outcome I had where the moment the power source is connected the 12V circuit would complete?

I am sure it can be used. But I would consult someone profficient with electronics to pick the right one so it does not overheat. Just write a question on any electronic forums describing your 12v circuit and ask which mosfet would they use if it requires any additional resistores etc. Most likely MOSFET I used would do the trick but I would double check it

All depends what you want to do. 90% of my projects I do with Arduino Nano as I usually do not need a lot of memory. The MC is the smallest and it costs peanuts. But if you want to use several modules with e.g. OLED display then there are new Unos REV4 that offer tons of additional memory and features. If we connect the relay directly to the Arduino, wouldn't there be a possibility of harming the Arduino, due to the voltage spikes in the solenoid coil of relay? So, should we use the snubber diode connected parallel to the relay or it is okay to use Relay directly?

A lot of the relays intended for Arduino can be set up with an optoisolator that is included in the module. You simply change a jumper from the configuration it comes with and power from a completely separate source (ie not the same power source the Arduino is using). The Arduino then basically turns on an led inside a cover that also contains a light sensor in order to trigger a circuit to trigger the relay.
@rushipadhiyar2615
@rushipadhiyar2615 2 роки тому
@@BigGoad Yeah, but in this video, there is not any optoisolator in relay module. That's why I asked.

@marios_ideas

Have you ever heard the click of the relay. You would understand that this is meant for 0/1 logic only. If you would send PWM the switch from 0 to 1 would be way to frequent for the proper switching of the relay.

When I connect the circuit following this video, the light is only received 0.1A of current and is extremely dim. I had a TIP31 on hand so I used that instead of the MOSFET. Any other thoughts about the problem?
