Bluetooth beacons are small inexpensive devices that you can use for indoor positioning, customer tracking, presence detection and more.
With the Proximi.io platform you can easily integrate these features into your own apps.
To achieve the best results it's important that you use the right amount of beacons and put them in the right places.
In this tutorial I will show you where and how to install beacons for optimal results.
The best way to start is by planning beforehand where you will place the beacons.
- Start with a map of the location where they will be installed.
- Start by placing beacons in the corners. Each beacon has a standard range of about 20 to 30 meters.
- Fill the missing spots until the whole area is covered. Your area has an odd shape you might want to place additional beacons just to make sure that the entire region is covered.
Indoor positioning relies on something called Trilateration which combines the
measurements of at least three beacons to provide an accurate position.
Don't worry if you have overlapping areas as this is something that actually improves
the quality of trilateration.
- Remember that some materials such as metal and concrete can block the beacons' signals.
- Once you have planned your beacon placement it's time to go and install them. Beacons should be installed at a height of about 2 to 3 meters. Good places are columns walls and even low ceilings and they should be placed so that there is a clear line of sight between the user's device and the beacon with no obstacles in between.
- You can use double-sided tape to place the beacons but make sure that they are steady in a fixed location and properly attached.
- Try to put beacons out of hands reach to avoid curious passerby tampering with them or taking them.
- It is advisable to install beacons near the entrances of your venue. In that way you can detect when the user enters or exits.
- Also, if your venue has multiple floors, you can put beacons near the elevator or
near the stairs. In that way you can detect when the user changes floor.
- Once you have installed the beacons, make sure to test that everything works.
