I wish I've seen your videos when I started with electronics, high amount of useful info condensed in a short amount of time with no compromises on the clarity of the message. My compliments!

Finally... This is the first and only video on YT, where the soldering iron is not dirty or ugly. Thx.
@tookitogo6 років тому
Levente Papp Hardly. PACE, Weller, Ersa, John Gammel, and many other pros have had videos showing nice clean irons. (And they achieve that without using sandpaper on their tips...)
@1over1376 років тому
For the fiddly components like LEDs and pin headers I use "tack soldering". Put solder on the tip of the iron, hold the component in place and touch it the tip to a pin, just enough to hold it in place. Then solder the other pin(s) and finally properly solder the tacked pin. Similar to how you tack SMD components into place first, then solder them properly.
@NNNILabs6 років тому
I use the same method too! I get OCD about alignment of parts, so I do things by hand. I hold down a capacitor by the top (all perfectly aligned, of course) and then just dab solder on a pin. Then the rest is as you say.
@santiagopicco13976 років тому
Not working if you messed it up and the component is hot, however it can works on many ocations.

I'm a technician for 6 years, sometimes we do large number of board assemblies and using things like this makes us slow. I'm just using all my fingers on my left hand to hold the solder wire, components and sometimes the board also. It is really doable infact I can still aim the solder lead to where it should be melted. But after watching this video I really considering using some of the tricks you taught us while I'm repairing a board cause sometimes it is really hard to solder components.
@nambinhvu5 років тому
If you have to solder multiple things it'll speed you up, because once you have everything in place you can solder them all at once.
@zolan42773 роки тому
Welp. I am quite noob-ish at all of this and just wasted a whole hour trying to get some MOSFETs on my board and they aren't all the same height and I probably got them too hot while trying to get them on right. Wish I had watched this video first. This was a damned fine video. Thank you.

Why did your video make me so emotional?
@A3Kr0n6 років тому
I've never tried holding parts with tape and whatnot. I solder one lead then hold it flat while re-soldering it again. SIP connectors will get a dab of solder from the iron while I hold it, then I'll re-solder it straight and flat like above. Just don't put your finger over the lead you're soldering or you'll be donating to the swear jar.

These are smart techniques. I usually tack one of the pins in any position, then correct the position of the package using the other hand by melting the tack, and then complete all the pins.

Are you come from Thailand? I saw you use Thai clay.
@Brian-uq6jm3 роки тому
I've always used blu tack. If not, I usually hold component with one hand, and then solder 1 pin with solder already on the iron tip. This pin will usually have cold solder but it doesn't matter, the point is for the component to be fixed on the PCB, and it usually works. Reflow it with more fresh solder and you are good.

It's good if you're soldering once in a year. Better to use PCB holders. China makes a lot of them now. Some good clones for funny money. It will be a not easy case if you're soldering more than a few elements on a protoboard. Usually bending leads wins. For soldering other things i use a PCB holder while manually (or with tweezers) holding an element. You can solder one leg without that "right 90 degree angle", then you just push it from another side and apply heat again. It will be fixed then. In some cases it needs to be two legs soldered then you push (manually or with a tool) then fix it. For a big amount of similar components people use special frames. It's a tool that keeps a PCB in place and a soft styrofoam holds elements from a backside. Then soldering those legs becomes easy-peasy :)
@jumbo999614Рік тому
Magnet trick is genius.
@zlackbiro6 років тому
The best way to hold elements, if they are with different size is with alu foil. You can wrap alu foil from behind and you can shape it following all elements shapes :D.
@johncoops68976 років тому
The best way is to use SOLDER to hold the components. In that way,. there is no need for all the complicated "parts holding systems".

@knowall57926 років тому
Over simplification. The problem is compounded because there may be 12-15 components on the tiny board. It is easier to use forceps/tongs in narrow areas.
@chrislewis22626 років тому
Be extremely careful when using magnets because some electronic parts are sensitive to magnetic field and it can dammage the chip(s) if not careful. Even if you are using the magnets to hold a different part the feild of the magnets can dammage nearby parts.
@johnerin22916 років тому
I wonder magnets can damage smartphone, hard disk drive, USB or microSD card ? if move smartphone nearby magnets in speaker, it can damage ?
@chrislewis22626 років тому
Yes hard disk drive are made up of very small magnets the circuit is designed to arrange the magnets (data) on the platters. So when you introduce a outside magnet it then changes the orientation on the HDD (data loss) because it erased the data from the disk. Solid state drive I am not 100% on cuz data is stored on a IC chip but if it was a large enough field then it could be possible
@hellterminator5 років тому
Do you have any examples? I've never heard of an IC that could be damaged by a magnet. Also, contrary to popular belief, it's damn near impossible to damage data on a hard drive with a magnet. I have some very strong magnets and I couldn't flip a single bit. I got the motor in the drive to stall, but I couldn't damage the data no matter how hard I tried.

There is NO need for any of this silly mucking around. Place all lowest height items (eg: resistors) then place the PCB down on the fucking table, and solder. Then place the next highest and place the PCB on the fucking table, and solder. It's not hard.
