I could not put down Hollow Knight for 5 months straight because my perspective of the world kept getting bigger and bigger, and the promise of finding new things everywhere. Even after 120+ hours of playing, I'm still finding out new things (somehow). But this would eventually end because Hollow Knight's content is finite, that is until I did Godhome, which had the most difficult challenges I have overcome in years. The Pantheon of Hallownest was the challenge that I spent months trying; it was the mountain I had to climb. And when I did it, I had to drop the game for a few weeks because obvious reasons.

I also have a request Mark: would you consider making a vid about *Psychological Tricks* in game design, explaining in more detail those you mention in 0:43 like Skinner Boxes, Daily Rewards, Resource Decay, Loss Aversion and many others, giving examples of games that do this? I just found 1 video explaining Skinner Boxes ( this one ukposts.info/have/v-deo/rIelqqiHi5iCwJc.html ) but I'd like a complete video explaning ALL the addiction strategies used by devs. Thanks! ^_^

I love it when games have expansive lore that influences and explains the world you play in. It's great when a mechanic used predominantly in something such as combat is explained outside it, say in a cutscene. That makes it seem like the characters actually know about this stuff, and not just the player controlling them.

Interesting, because personally (heh) I found Persona 5 to be one of the most boring games I've ever played (even more so towards the end, where you have the full stretch of mementos + final area). Persona 4 is even worse since the most dungeons look the same, and the gameplay never exactly changes, to the point that I gave up playing at the 2nd or 3rd dungeon (forgot whose is it. Probably Kanji's). Meanwhile even when I got stomped hard by bosses, games like Sekiro keeps bringing me back. I literally grind on final battle for days, and yet I don't get bored with it.

Don't know what games you play (or maybe you play them all) but I personally think many devs spend too much time on length and not replayability. I have a whole library of games I've started and not finished. If the game is engaging through 40hrs of campaign great. Many 20hr games I think would be just as well served with an 8hr campaign that was filled with moments I wanted to play over and over again. Game design wise starfox 64 was one of my favorite games ever. Takes an hour to beat but I've probably sunk several hundred hours of my life into that game over the years because it is always a blast to replay thay 1hr of amazing level designs.

Celeste was a huge hook for me - i think mostly for 1) the precision that the game provides you, without which it wouldn't be posible to have such a huge challenge, and 2) the constant ramp up that challenge has. You always feel like you're having a hard time, throughout the entire game. But if you go back to the first levels after 12-15h of game play, they feel like a walk in the park. After going though c sides and farewell, even most B sides feel "kind of easy".

I just couldn't put that one down; the mystery of what was a little bit deeper, the fear of knowing that there's probably something absolutely terrifying down there, and the massive narrative challenge of escaping the world (which, for spoiler reasons, gets far more interesting about a third of the way through). That, combined with the fantastic crafting system - where, for the most part, you don't create incrementally better versions of the same item, but rather create new items or vehicles that change the core gameplay - meant that I just couldn't step away. I'd love to see a Game Maker's Toolkit about that game, and about survival games in general. I feel there's a place for a really well-crafted piece regarding Subnautica's design!

Subnautica is amazing. One peculiar personal problem I've had it with it is that I feel the need to over-prepare because it scares the heck out of me, and gathering the courage and resources to move past the lost river (which was a mind blower, I agree) has been a challenge. It's such a good game.

The dialogue system in Oxenfree were really engaging for me, because all the options were entertaining and made meaningful differences to the plot and characters while still flowing great, and the pacing of the mystery on the island was great, with bits and pieces coming together during calmer moments exploring problem solving building up with smaller supernatural incidents that’ll give the characters hints about what’s going on until the next high tension moment where something big becomes clearer and it raises the stakes with urgent new problems. Also, multiple endings :)

I've been playing Into the Breach like crazy the past few weeks, after having put it down for a few years. I just realized though that it doesn't have traditional skill "trees" it most definitely has something very similar in the use of upgradable weapons and abilities. I couldn't put it down because of the "Secret Squad" that you can unlock by completing all the 55 achievements in the game. What I love about into the breach is that its achievements weren't just elaborate ways to say "win more", but rather encouraged players to step out of their comfort zone and change up their gameplay. One of the hardest challenges for me was to destroy every "Time Pod" you come across. Time pods randomly drop on the map in your battles and guarantee some kind of upgrade, so they're really hard to pass up - imagine having to consciously destroy your chances at a good run! Great video, great channel, it's been making me appreciate the thoughtfulness put into games.

relationships/human connection is a thing that makes me engaged. In The Witcher 3 for example the first part of the game Geralts mission is to find Yennefer, if i know they have a strong connection, I want to play until I find her. Then the same thing happened with Ciri. When theres a character that you care about I feel like the game becomes more meaningfull and I enjoy it way more than pure combat.
@danielschroedinger2090
@danielschroedinger2090 4 роки тому
@Zoe Kin It is established that Yennefer was important to Geralt, while on your first playthrough (or without book knowledge) you are not expected to know much else about her. Since the game makes you feel for Geralt by characterising him through interactions with other people you want to help him find her. So far it should work for everyone. Later once you get to know Yennefer better you might realise you like her yourself or start to despise her. This is when a greater goal (Ciri) but also an alternative romantic partner (Triss) get introduced so you are motivated to keep progressing regardless of how you feel about Yennefer. You are made to care about Ciri even more by seing things from her perspective. In terms of motivating the player through narrative I think it is materfully done. You have an overaching goal you are invested in and every step towards it tells its own story.
@bronsoncarder2491
@bronsoncarder2491 4 роки тому
@Zoe Kin well... And this would be a great topic to cover for the channel... Witcher 3 isn't a "blank slate rpg", it's a "character rpg" (to coin some terms). You aren't creating this character, and your feelings about his potential romantic partner aren't supposed to matter that much. You are playing the role of an established person, who already has his own attachments and desires. So, your feeling that their relationship is toxic, in a real way, isn't very important. What really matters is that Geralt finds their relationship exciting and freeing in a way. Choosing to be with her is choosing a Geralt who doesn't care what other people thinks, a Geralt who follows his desires and lives his life his own way. On the other hand, Geralt feels that Triss is more stable, a more socially acceptable choice. She makes him feel like he could leave his life of violence, settle down somewhere. She makes him feel like an honest man. That is the choice you're making: freedom vs. peace. Not just, "which of these women do I like more?"

For me its always been mystery. I love to be told a story or uncover secrets. In-game accomplishments are nice, but they feel superficial to me for some reason. Funny enough, those in-game accomplishments are exactly what keeps the hardcore fans of Stardew Valley coming back for more. It's fascinating that everyone has their own trigger for reinforcement.
@Manglet762
@Manglet762 3 роки тому
It's likely because most in-game accomplishments, or Achievements, are just glorified to-do lists. They're not challenging enough to warrant the title "Achievement". This is a gripe I have with basically every game. "Oh, I got an Achievement for killing 500 of an enemy that's easy to kill? Well, guess I can say I've killed that many, even though it really just came subconsciously." "Oh, I got an Ancheivement for killing 10 players without dying? Eh, they were AI and all they really do is just lump together. Plus, I got off a match where actual players were basically running into my bullets, so yeah." "Oh, I got an Achievement for beating the *FUCKING TUTORIAL*? What's next, an Achievement for logging in?" "Oh, I crafted a weapon? I don't think using a game mechanic you start using within 3 minutes of playing warrants the Ancheivement label." Most, hell I'm tempted to say ALL, Achievements nowadays aren't actually challenging enough to get that make one player's skill stand out from others. It's also scary to see that a good amount of Ancheivements that are piss-easy to get have low amounts of players who have gotten it ("only 38% of players beat the game on Easy or above?!"). I'm hoping to eventually find a game that has Achievements that are actually designed to be CHALLENGING, something you have to actively work for to get. Stardew Valley as you've referenced might be such a game since vets specifically hint for them.

My thoughts on this, a conclusion I've come to only recently: I am failure-averse. Thus, I "enjoy" games that don't require you to be skilled. MMOs like WoW, Guild Wars 2, Runescape and Maplestory, all games I've played at one point or another, and are usually the games I have played the longest, don't ask much of you (Unless it's PvP, other players are usually pretty reliably challenging opponents, unless you're like MLG level). The PvE components are mostly a stream of rewards given for time spent, with the rewards being given often enough that it gives me a nice spike of dopamine when I receive them. The reason I don't really define myself as a gamer, despite my long hours spent playing games, is because I'm ashamed of what I like, and my reasons for liking it. When I'm playing, I get less "enjoyment" out of it so much as it's a way to easily pass the time until responsibility (AKA my job) calls. I love games, I really do. But I don't play a great variety (despite my long steam library backlog), because I'm too busy playing the games that give me the most reward for the least effort. And now, when a game requires that I put a bit of effort in to get a reward, it fails to grab my attention. So often I look back and think "That is a GOOD GAME, but it just failed to grab me", and I don't think it's because the game fails to have good engagement methods, but because they don't cater to a sop like me who craves recognition for little to no effort. This leads me to my point. The kind of games that you like may reflect an unpleasant truth. It may show that you need to reconsider what you like and try to break out of your shell (but only if you really want to, you know, a bit like psychological therapy). I'm not saying that anyone who plays the kind of games that I do need to change their habits. Your reasons for enjoying them may be entirely different from mine, and even if they're not, as long as it's not really damaging you in any way, you're free to make your own life decisions. Thanks GMTK, for giving me a reason to do a little self-reflection :)

I think it also has to do with where you're at in your life as well and what you're hoping to get out of games. When I was younger, I'd spend hours grinding at Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. so I could get better and finally overcoming the challenge was fun for me. It was rewarding to find something I couldn't beat and then get good enough to beat it. A few years ago, I loved Call of Duty multiplayer and getting better and leveling up in that. It was rewarding to be good enough compared to other players to do well against them. But, now I'm at a point similar to yours where I'm now on older Assassin's Creed games where there's a minor challenge, but I can win without putting forward maximum effort. And, that's because my life has enough challenges as it is. I go to work and push myself to constantly do better at making sales. When it's time for me to relax and game, I do it so I can escape from the challenges of life. I don't want something else that's going to push me. That's the beauty I've found in game genres. That's why I keep playing even if my taste keeps changing. Games are there to give you the reward that you need. If not, why play them?

Weirdly enough, I love GW2 (and spent my teenage years on MapleStory) for the opposite reason -> they put challenges in front of you. GW2 is, for the most part, a pretty casual game, that doesn't require much of you. But then there are raids, and more hardcore achievements and collections that would test you. Sometimes you would spend weeks finishing a certain collection to be rewarded with a unique item, usually with a unique visual effect, that you can wear proudly. And MapleStory... well, it's a korean MMO, so it's obviously a grindfest, farming maps for days at a time for certain drops, finding the perfect spots for leveling, and then grinding the devil out of them to reach those sweet sweet higher levels... I really liked the game before it all turned into a raging dumpster fire.

@@JoshuaCard Yeah, for me who didn't feel very challenged in school, even in College, I could turn to competitive games for challenges, Super Smash Bros Melee, Starcraft2-difficult games with a brutal skill curve appealed to me because I could actually feel like I earned it when I succeeded. But most people don't look for the same challenges in games because they are busy spending their mental energy on other challenges, and that's what's great about games-there's a game for you no matter what you're looking for.

Even if what I learn is only useful for that one game it still feels like my time is more useful while playing those games compared to watching a movie because I get to improve

Yes, this is a game that engaged me too, and I played through it pretty much non-stop. It has an incredible storyline that speaks to me as someone who understands the theories and principals behind it. [Spoiler alert] The story keeps you asking questions throughout, and regularly gives you little pieces of the puzzle, but then the ending... oh the ending! Finding out that the person you are playing is both Booker and Comstock, and that Elizabeth was Booker's daughter and Comstock stole her from... himself, I guess? It's a bit of a mindf**k, but a good one, and it made sense. I think that game did a good job of making you feel some emotion towards some of the characters, as well as doing something not a lot of games (in my opinion) do - letting you know the character you're playing is an asshole. But going back to what I said about how it gives you information regularly so you are always learning the answers to the questions you've been made to think about, I think it's also great that Booker himself is discovering these things along with you. Not only does the player have the revelation, but the character does too, and I think that is really powerful.

Funny enough, today I was actually telling my best friend about how I loved the pacing in DOOM. For me, I enjoyed it because it didn't bog me down with too many unskippable cutscenes (each lasting maybe no more than a minute), only forced a tutorial pause on me once, and that I got to choose how long I spent exploring an area after a fight (or before triggering one). If I go through it again on Hard mode (which I want to do), I won't have to wait through long, unskippable, and boring exposition that I already know. It could also be because I've never actually played a game like DOOM before where it's okay to constantly take damage, run like hell, and get close and personal to enemies (most shooters these days instakill you if you try to melee/shotgun an opponent, _Ahem_ *_DESTINY_*). Portal 2, while good and is always fun to revisit, feels very slow when not testing, and I hate not being able to skip "exploring" the Enrichment Center as I've already been wowed by the environment, the scale of the facility, and the silly little quirks that makes Aperture go. That said, the first time you see it you're like, "Wow...look at that!", but the novelty wears off after the first couple viewings and you just want to play the damn game. I think my takeaway from this video is everyone has a different desire for pacing, and games have different ways of pulling it off. I have to figure out the kind of pacing I want to put in my games, and make sure that people don't grow bored.

jodudeit precisely, I never got tired of DOOM because DOOM never let go. Relentless combat and well hidden secrets kept me going and it never felt repetitive. But of course, people just stick to 3 or 4 guns and don't take advantage of the full arsenal at hand, giving their combat scenarios a lot less variety and fun. DOOM (especially in higher difficulties) teaches you to push forward and experiment with the tools it gives you, since resources are ONLY scarce when you play defensively.

Taylor Conners DOOM didn't pretend. Because the bones and meat of the combat were solid and reliable. Even the protagonist - the doomslayer - was designed to push this single idea. RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Divinity: Original Sin, or KotOR, and turn based tactical games like X-Com or Xenonauts (or Divinity, once again) do that for me. I like the idea of entering into a game world I don't fully understand and don't have total control over and then exploring what I can do within the confines of the game to solve a difficult encounter. That's probably why I like the old X-Com games more than the new ones, as the immersive sim/sandbox nature of the old ones allowed for more creative approaches to problems than the new games do.

Skyrim is mine too. I love well-made open worlds in general. You COULD follow the main quest-line, but there's plenty of room to decide what sort of person you want to be, how much or how little of the world's events you want to get involved in and in what way, or whether to put it all on hold and go pick some flowers and catch butterflies. Then there are all the mods, to add/subtract/modify just about any feature you can think of. (LONG STORY WARNING, NO SERIOUSLY): One of my characters developed a "main storyline" of her own that just emerged from experiences during the game - I played an orc who during a bloodlust-filled battle accidentally killed her trusted follower whom she had previously helped and rescued from poverty and dissolution... he just wanted to go traveling again like he had in his youth, and have an adventure... Poor old Roggi. She became a cold-hearted killing machine - less soldier and more killer, as she continued helping Ulfric Stormcloak see through his ambitions to punish the Empire which had exploited her people as front-line grunts for ages, and... (after hearing Legate Rikke's and General Tullius' very sensible and entirely true pleas to keep Skyrim united to prevent the Aldmeri Dominion - who secretly supported Ulfric for exactly this reason - from invading a newly weakened Skyrim a few years later) standing at Ulfic's side as he gave his victory speech felt not triumphant, but cold and hollow in a "I am her because I am the best murderer... Have I just helped destroy Skyrim?" kind of way. She became a wanderer for a while, going through the motions while seeking a new purpose, and eventually found Erandur in Dawnstar - who was seeking his own redemption. After finding it, through the love of Mara and the confrontation with his old Daedric mistress Vaermina, he became a follower (my character had resisted any other offers from potential followers up to this point, but finally accepted his offer, because this was a man who knew something about redemption). They went to Riften and began serving the temple of Mara (quest-line) and helping people throughout Skyrim "find love". Around this time, the "Imperious Races of Skyrim" mod's effect on orcs started kicking in (I recommend Enai Siaion's mods in general, they create a whole new experience and add a lot of variety - Imperious Races, Ordinator Perks, Apocalypse Spells, and Wintermist Enchantments are the ones I've used). The effect in this case is that berserker rage can trigger randomly when you enter into combat... the red haze, the shaking and blurring screen, especially not being under my control, it felt more like being haunted by flashbacks, and reminded of the blood-thirst that had gone so wrong, than being a badass warrior. It was disorienting, unsettling, and perfect for the story at this point. I (and by extension my character) became disillusioned with the temple quests of "love" because Mara seemed interested in rewarding infatuation and obsession, which I didn't find to be worthy of my help (like old Calcelmo who was so "in love" with his... co-worker? Faleen that he had never really spoken to her and didn't even know her well enough to know any of her interests - which is not "love" in my book, and the quest relied on utterly deceiving her with a fake poem he didn't even know he was supposed to have written for her) - the whole way back to Riften I was silently ranting to myself about how if Mara thinks that kind of behavior is "love" then she as a goddess of love is BULLSHIT, which I said to myself just as I walked in the door to the temple. I realized my character was trying to follow the path to _someone else's_ redemption, not her own. She dismissed Erandur, and became a wanderer again. All the while, she had become one of the most powerful warriors possible, able to cut down powerful dragons with one or two blows from her mighty axe, and stand in the path of dragon fire or frost without so much as wincing. She went to the orcs, her people. A stronghold near Riften was in trouble because its chief, Yamarz was weak. He was given a quest by the Daedric patron of the orcs, Malacath, to slay a giant and restore Malacath's shrine - and brought my character along because he was a coward. He died, and she slew the giant. She returned to the orcs and Malacath didn't make her chief, but handed the title to some other member of the stronghold. Though she was an orc, stronghold orcs still treated her like an outsider. And she was. In the end, it was enough, not to be a bloodthirsty killer, certainly not to be a Stormcloak (most of whom were more racist toward orcs than the Imperials were, anyway), not to be an orc who revels in berserk rage and serves a Daedric lord, or a "member" of any group or faction, but to be the outsider who could see through the fears, prejudices, and agendas of Jarls and peasants alike, with eyes unclouded by hate - a lone wanderer, powerful, self-reliant, with a troubled brow and an unflinching sense of honor that was all her own. She rode out of the orc stronghold into the golden forests of the Rift, greyed by an early morning rain, and I felt like that was a perfect place to stop the game with that character (without having finished the main quest-line, joined most of the main factions, done any of the DLC quest-lines, or anything), and say "The End". It was a totally emergent storyline, but it engaged me more deeply than any of the scripted quests - though I enjoy those too (but I always try to look for my character's particular "angle" or storyline, especially since playing that orc). There are still plenty of quests I haven't ever done, even having played several different characters, so there's more to go back for, even with hundreds of hours logged on Steam. TL;DR: Skyrim is a classic because your experience is (or can be) a gestalt - i.e. it's more than the sum of its parts.

I think thats really well executed in later soulsborne entries and not that many games pull a lack of guiding narrative off that well. Breath of the wild The utter expanse of a world filled with stuff to take, kill and find and a motorcycle to do it with

A game that kept me engaged like no other has ever done has to be the recent Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I feel like the biggest factor was how the game was constantly picking up my curiosity. "What's that over there?", "How do I get there?", "Would this work?, "What if I do this instead?", the game always presents a new challenge and multiple ways to go about it, always culminating in me getting rewarded for it, whether it was a Korok, a shrine, some quest, etc, there was always something taking me away from my current objective, so exploring was always satisfying. That coupled with the feeling of growth and improvement you get to expect from those kinds of games.

The last single player game series I invested any serious time in was the Mass Effect series. I think the thing that really brought the series together for me was the Citadel DLC content (I later learned it was a DLC as it's just a part of the Legendary edition which is how I purchased the series). The thing this DLC did is it strongly showcased the relationships your character built throughout the series with the supporting characters. All the little decisions you made along the way of the entire trilogy were reflected in the story and available interactions in that DLC's content. It was amazing. I actually felt a true connection to the persona I had lived out as my character and the crewmembers he had built relationships with. So to sum that up into something a game designer can actually use. It was also perfectly timed. That DLC was basically the last thing I did before the final battle and concluding the series. It gave a huge amount of emotional weight to the conclusion. I think creating content that shows the player the effect of their decisions, and giving emotional weight to that content, is a hugely rewarding experience if done right. And I mean obviously with Mass Effect there were only so many possible conclusions. But it really helped me forget that and feel fully immersed and invested in that moment. Obviously a moment like that isn't something that will keep your player playing until the end, but a lot of smaller moments like that throughout the series did. And they built up that conclusion so it was perhaps the most memorable experience I've ever had in a single player game.

I think "charm" has a huge effect on me. Games like Celeste, Mummy Demastered, or Persona 5 for example, have a lot of "squishiness" to their characters and UI, and of course a great soundtrack that keeps me playing it in the moment but also keeps me thinking "what music am I going to hear NEXT?"

God of War in my opinion had perfect pacing in every single way. The story had a narrative that struck a cord with my love for mythological fantasy, and was constantly teasing what it would unwind into. There's enough side content to give you plenty to do if you want a break from the main story, without being overwhelming. The side content is also very rewarding. Even if the armor I got from doing a side quest was something I'd never end up using, I never felt as though my time was wasted. And lastly, the difficulty of the game kept me on my toes, and even though deaths weren't exactly infrequent, I didn't feel as though the game was cheating me. The best challenge in a video game is one that, if failed, doesn't frustrate you but inspires you to keep going, to correct your mistakes and try again until you triumphantly over come. This is what put God of War on the top of my list and this is why I was never able to put the game down. There was always something to do and always some challenge to overcome.

I agree, perfect balance of main story and side quests. And they even tease you with areas you can't go to yet or chests you can't reach.

One thing that makes me keep coming back to Dead Cells is the randomly generated maps on each level and the weapons I get at the beginning. Every time I start a new run it's so refreshing seeing different weapons and abilities at the start to choose from and basically just basing my whole run off of those weapons lol

Tetris: I used to love it years ago, and when I found Tetris effect connected was on game pass I’ve been very attached to it. It’s constantly working my brain, and every game I play I get just that much better. The other thing with the game is that it’s one of the few thing I can do to clear my mind. While playing, since it is such a simple game, I’m not thinking about the game or anything else; just moving some squares on a screen. I love this about the game because I have a very active mind and have a hard time clearing it. I’m skilled enough at the game that I don’t have to focus on it too much unless the speed gets too high or I’m playing against another player, but I can’t just start thinking about something else because I actually have to pay attention to what I’m doing (if that makes any sense)

Same. Sometimes I play video games to make my mind stop thinking all the time. And here I thought I was the only one.

that question at the end got me! A very entertaining thought for sure... defiantly not the last game i found to be engaging, but I’ll have to go with my favorite game of all time: Ratchet And Clank Future: A Crack In Time. It had it’s pillars- mostly fighting action, but also platforming, puzzles, space exploration/ combat, arena battles, side missions, and collectibles. what really does it for me with the R&C games is that nearly every level, a new weapon unlocks. and R&C is known for its crazy weapons. So that made it pretty exciting to see what new weapon you’d get next, after just have getting a new one on the current level your one (but ofc you’d have to save up to be able to buy it- another reason to want to keep playing: you see the new weapon, now you gotta keep playing to earn it!). A new weapon is basically a new way to play, so your gameplay is constantly changing. And the weapons level up from use, encouraging you to use it. and upon completion, you unlock challenge mode (New game plus) keeping everything you’ve earned, but now you can upgrade further, and it’s all harder. Plus the story was just, imho, phenomenal. the best in the series. if you even get a chance to play it, assuming you previously have not, you must play, AT LEAST R&C Future: Tools Of Destruction first. and if you can, the short game, R&C Future: Quest for Booty, which is in between TOD and ACIT (it’s a trilogy called the Future Saga if you haven’t noticed lol). But yeah. Ratchet And Clank. Very engaging. Another great video, Mark! Love what you do, really appreciate it and find it inspiring (as a low end content creator). Keep it up

I think it was the gameplay that did it for me. I think BotW rewards weren't very interesting to be honest, it just felt like a bunch of small quests that rewarded the same small thing. But still, I just couldn't put that game down. Usually when I play a game I end up being a bit tired after playing for some time. For some games it's ~1 hour, for others its ~3. But BotW was different. For some reason I never got tired of playing, even after very long sessions. It just felt so... "easy" to play. Not "easy" as the difficulty, but more like, the gameplay, controls, UI, etc... caused zero necessary "superficial effort" (I don't know how to put it better) from me. And also, I think the world in itself played a big part. So many interesting places to visit. What's over there? What's on the other end of that road? Up that mountain? Inside that giant cave? etc.

Breath of the Wild actually petered out hard for me. I beat the 4 dungeons, I wanted to upgrade my gear before Ganon but it was so tedious I just stopped caring. I never beat Ganon.

The long dark - even if I took a pause for some time, I still get back to it, again and again. I think that’s because of a specific atmosphere I like. I never know how long I can make it before I die there, but I always try to do my best there. And the process itself is very engaging: for a few first day my main goal is just survive and find a shelter, then - some supplies, and after that - prepare for hunting or/and fishing. Exploring the open world is also interesting. At last but not the least is absence of zombies in the survival game. Unfortunately, that’s very rare for this genre
