In this experiment I show you to perform quantum tunneling. I first explain what quantum tunneling actually is, then I show you how to make it happen. I talk about total internal reflection and how light can bounce off boundary layers and then how light can actually tunnel through it.

Large objects can also tunnel, but their probability is so low you might never see it happen. But, you can increase the probability of something to tunnel by increasing it's energy. So if you channel enough energy through your body, you should be able to quantum tunnel through an object just before you explode.

Large objects can't quantum tunnel because they never act as waves. And this for two reasons: 1) they are constanstly measured by something, the bigger the more thing there are which are measuring it. Being measured = wave collapse = no quantum behaviour 2) even if you could for some divine intervention isolate the object it's wave function would still be so small because of it's mass that it would still act completely normal. Giving it more energy wouldn't solve, +e = +m = smaller wave function

You know, I recall a story a friend of mine once told me about what I believe was this same principle. He stated that, given enough attempts, any object would (in theory) phase through any other object no matter the thickness. He gave the example of, if you were to slap your hand on a wooden table once every second in the exact same place for long enough, it would eventually pass right through the table as if it wasn't there. Granted, the heat death of the universe would probably have come and gone several times before you managed it, but it would still eventually happen. The reason being (if I recall his explanation correctly) was that molecules of your hand would eventually vibrate/align with those of the table in just such a way, that they wouldn't interact with each other when you tried to strike the table. I always found that story fascinating.
@poofingers3054
@poofingers3054 2 роки тому
call me a loon but me and my friend swear we saw this happen with a tennis ball which passed through a net, no additional holes in the net which shouldn’t have been there and it definitely didn’t go over, under or around. only reason i believe i saw it is because he pointed it out to me after i noticed and said nothing
@joaotanaka3071
@joaotanaka3071 2 роки тому
Now, this is interesting. I know it's just fictional, but in The Flash show, he can use his speed to vibrate, and align his molecules to the air frequency, or even thinner, and phase ant barrier. I never actually understood how it works, but now, after this video all makes sense.

This dude is recklessly careless and mislead us throughout the whole video telling us we were witnessing quantum tunneling when we are actually just witnessing light moving through glass. Don’t listen to this guy as he is NOT a scientist. He’s a UKpostsr. Please don’t forget that lol
@daytonenloe2926
@daytonenloe2926 Рік тому
Unfortunately that’s a very common misconception of the concept. Since macroscopic objects don’t have wave functions, and are too big, they can’t quantum tunnel. It’s a very common joke about slapping your hand on a table. If there were a nonzero probability of it happening, we would see moving objects phase through things all the time, we would see things partially phased, think about how many steps every single animal takes in one day, then imagine how many times people or animals feet would be seen partially in the ground. Especially since we see moving objects interact way more than people think.

The Quantum Tunnel effect reminds me of a phenomenon in Games and Simulations. If an Objekt in a Game/Simulation is small and fast enough it can tunnel right through aswell. In the Computer you can fix this problem with raycasting (basically checking the space between the last and latest position if there is any obstacle). It's pretty interesting that this even applies to the real world somehow.

i know that if you takes two transparent cubes made of different compound, you place them side by side in a way that they makes perfect surface contact, if you place a light source near one of the object, the light that will get out of the second object will be angled... but if you places a third cube made of the same material than the first one... the light will come back straight but a bit offset... the angle and the offset depend of the materials used... but the best is to pass a lazer in between a hair comb... and try to block the lazer with a needle...

This is always shown as the "barrier" as being a curve/wall and an "electron" trying to go (tunnel) through it. I drew up some slides that show the barrier as a 3 atom thick barrier and the probabily space/time wave of the electron. As the electron with low energy comes close to the 3 atom thick barrier, the probability wave reflects off the first layer of atoms and causes the probability wave decay as it passes through the space occupied by the 3 atom layer thick barrier. It shows that in such a thin barrier, there is still good probability that the electron can appear on the other side of the barrier. Like refraction/reflection, part of the electron's probability wave also reflects off the final layer of atoms as it leaves the barrier. So, you ask, how can probability alone "physically" allow the low energy electron to "tunnel" through? Well, the probabilty reflections effect the electron's past (see my explanation on quantum entanglement). So, the past of the electron can be "perturbed" to give it a different path though space-time to put it on the other side "before" the barrier was even at that point in space-time. Look at it this way, at the tiny 1 Plank length (millions of times smaller than an atom), this is where the ever changing past meets the uncertain future to become the now at 1 Plank time (a very tiny span of time - less that we can even come close to measure). The universe works like this at the quantum level - where Pradoxes can exist but contained within 1 Plank length and last for 1 Plank time, we see a blur of this at our level. As the future meets the now, it can send info back in time 1 Plank time. Once something goes back just 1 Plank time, it can go all the way back to the Big Bang if needed to effect the "needed" outcome of the now... no matter how far back in the past it has to go, the result catches up to the now instantly, because it was all in the past. Time is not constant, and moves backwards at the quantum level. Whew! You gotta light up a doobie on this [laugh]. This ties in with entanglement, quantum foam, virtual particles, uncertainty principle, quantum states, and more. In English? Time moves backwards too, so ANYTHING is possible, even what SEEMS to be impossible. We think that the past is fixed, but at the quantum level it is always changing, we just can't get to the past at our level to prove it (it is gone to us), and we can't predict the uncertain future (it hasn't happened yet). The now is actually moving from the past to the future 1 tiny Plank instant at a time. But OUR now is a big blur of those tiny Plank moments. So our RECORDS of the past seem fixed because of the blurs. Make sense?

@@cocoisadog This is not due to quantum tunneling. This effect is called "frustrated total internal reflection" and can be perfectly explained with classical electrodynamics. The explanation is that during total internal reflection, although perfect electromagnetic waves (with constant amplitude and frequency) do not pass through, there is a transmitted evanescent field, which due to the presence of a now complex valued index of refraction, decay exponentially in space. So when the finger is placed very close to the glass can be seen. taken from reddit , courtesy of TheEsteemedSirScrub
