I went to Paris two years ago for work. At first, when ordering food, I was speaking English and I found that the staff we not very friendly. After two days I relied on my not so good high-school French and tried to order food in French. Two things happened: 1. The staff were a lot more polite. 2. Most would straight away switch to English! 😆 Basically, I learnt that French people are very friendly if you make a little effort to speak French and they are actually more than happy to converse in English, if they see you’re struggling with French!

Its a common thing throughout France, they don't like the expectation they will speak a language that is not theirs... so they prefer to see our struggle to learn their language than default to English. Et pourquoi pas? 😄😄

Don't forget that Paris doesn't represent France. If you want to see the real France, come in Auvergne and you will see the real population. Usually, nobody in France likes Parisien

This is a good attitude to have. It should be expected that when people come to YOUR country, they could at least TRY to converse in YOUR language. It's the respectful and non arrogant thing to do.

I fully agree with "Scaredy" below. I have been studying French in Sancerre at a French immersion course and enjoyed it so much that I rented an apartment for a year. I do pretty well with ordering a baguette and a pain au chocolat. And if you try to speak French in the tiny town of Sancerre, the local people are very nice and will help you. When I tried to order a mille feuille, one of the best sweets ever!, the proprietor of the boulangerie had a great time trying to teach me how to pronounce those words! They appreciate you at least trying. But, it's like that in our own country, right? Whichever country in which you live. If tourists at least try, bad as their attempt may be, their trying is appreciated.

When ordering something in a bakery, we often say "Je vais VOUS prendre une baguette" which is something like "I will take a baguette from you"

Bonjour! When I was in France, ordering some things at a bakery and tried using my French but when I added my fingers, to show how many, they laughed because we count on our hands differently. (Americans use their first finger for one, in France, the thumb is used to show one; in America, we use the first two fingers and in France the thumb and first fingers are used.) I think this information is very important, and could be shown easily. Thank you so much, I'll continue to watch and learn! Merci beaucoup! :D

Friendly warning: the "galette des rois" has a small ceramic figurine (fève) hidden inside. Don't break a tooth or swallow it. It's used to determine who gets the crown.👑

Je confirme firme depuis la Belgique que la formule "Je vais vous prendre..." est typiquement française. C'est ainsi que parle le peuple de France.

Merci pour cette vidéo ! Quand vous demandez une baguette classique, vous pouvez aussi préciser la cuisson que vous souhaitez. Par exemple : "une baguette bien cuite, s'il vous plaît", pour avoir une baguette bien dorée et croustillante. En général, les boulangers proposent des baguettes avec des cuissons variées (du pain blanc au pain marron), comme ça on peut faire son choix. :)

I remember when I went to Paris in 2007 (I was in my second year in high school French), I would order "des patisseries" in French at the different bakeries we went to. I was excited when the sales clerk understood clearly what I asked for. Good times! J'aime Paris!

1:20 - Right there. That's when the accent becomes impossible for my English ears. "Je pourrais avoir" flows together in such a way that I can't distinguish the words. J'espère qu'un jour je pourrai comprendre cet accent naturel.

It become a kind of "esque chpourrais (est-ce que je pourrais) avoir une baguette" ^^ its the same with je sais pas we say it so quickly it become: j'sais pas ou ché pas we barely prononce the "Je"

He's saying "est-ce que je pourrais avoir" Basically, since the sound at the end of "pourrais" and "avoir" are so alike, most people just unify them when they speak quickly. In the same manner, we often skip the "e" in "je", which basically makes 'Est-ce que j'pourrais..." These two things taken together: "Est-ce que j'pourrai'voir une baguette..." (which is absolutely not how you should write it, just how you should listen to it).
