HOW TO PREVENT GRASS FROM STICKING TO YOUR MOWER DECK WITH SLIP PLATE DRY FILM GRAPHITE LUBRICANT! Recently, I CERAMIC COATED my LAWN MOWER DECK. While this worked well, it only lasted about 1 month or 8-10 mows. A few subscribers mentioned giving SLIP PLATE a try and claimed that it LASTED MUCH LONGER. Watch and see how I APPLY it to my lawn mower deck, plus see how it does mowing TALL, WET GRASS. LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!!!

EDIT: As of FALL 2022 This mower did 18 mows with 5 soaking wet lawn mows throughout. Clippings began sticking on the last mow and bonding to the deck but a lot of grass came right off with a quick rinse. This product lasted twice as long as a ceramic coating with only one coat. In the ale 80's I purchased a 1966 Bolens 12HP Hydro with deck, blower, and rototiller. 12HP then is 24 today + -. At the time the best, longest lasting coating was POUR15. I cleaned, sanded the underside of the deck. 3 mows later, the majority of the coating was removed. It really showed the amount of friction that goes on.

I cleaned and applied Slip Plate to my mower deck as indicated in the video. I live in the Northeast. In October we not only get rain but also tons of morning dew. Just cut my lawn and the grass clippings all accumulated on the underside mower deck. I see no difference in using slip slide versus a rustoleum paint. I will say that cleaning the under deck with a hose is easier with the slip plate on the deck but for some reason it still accumulates like it did before when mowing. My mower is a 21” Honda similar to the one in the video.

Used on posts and sliding decks of car hauling equipment for over 30 years. All metal to metal contact will buff itself smooth. Use multiple coats and you can build it up in corners and crevices. Didn't think of the mower deck application until about 20 years ago. All my friends and neighbors have been using mine for years. Everyone has pulled the solid to the top and spilled it just replenish the liquid with mineral spirits and it will rejuvenate a dried up can.

I use slip plate a lot at work. Usually before we use it, we hit up the local hardware store. They shake it for free. Works best to break down those big clumps. Especially as it ages you’ll get a lot more clumping as it dries out. Then we add a little diesel fuel to it to bring back a little moisture.

Do you really find Slip-plate works better than silicone? I just tried slip-plate for the first time...and wish I hadn't. Silicone was a better experience for me, and in Seattle the grass is ALWAYS wet. My mower is designed to store sitting upright on the end where the bag attaches...so its ready to spray with silicone before mowing and adds maybe 15 seconds to overall start time. When I'm done mowing...I put it back to upright position and blow everything off with compressed air (this part takes several minutes, but it looks like a brand new mower when done). Then put away...repeat next mow. Slip-plate was a giant messy hassle to apply...and it seems to work about the same as the silicone, except you don't end up with a brand new looking under deck when you're done...sort of a permanent mess of slip-plate. Now, I get not everyone has an electric mower that pops up on it's end for easy spraying and blowing off...and I might have liked slip-plate on my old gas mowers because getting under the deck much more of a pain.r

@@katbot2190Yes, I have used it on those gallon cans of paint that turn your wall into chalk boards, and magnetic boards (oh-my that was some really thick stuff - no hope to reuse the roller); primers (we all know how thick those can be - especially if they're stain/mildew-blocking) and others types of thick enamels and latex paint - size doesn't matter pints, quarts, gallons, 5 gallon - time really doesn't change much either - the goal is to get the solids in motion so that you can use the paint stirrer (paint-stick, paddle, spinning-thing-on-the-end-of-the-drill, etc...) more effectively - back to the old physics in that things in motion... amazing how smart these old guys are, never a day of college, some barely even had more than an elementary school education - but know how to lay a stair-stringer or rafters better than the blue-print BTW: Works with sweetened condensed milk too - had some "off-brand" that the sugars settled to the bottom (never again) I opened the first can to find the solid mass in the bottom and just flipped all of the remaining cans over and let them sit for 10 minutes before opening them for the recipe. ;-)

@zpvnrt
@zpvnrt 10 місяців тому
@@jamesborton9237 that works fine on the thinner paints, and I've used the coat-hanger for these; however, this doesn't work for the paints with high-solid contents like the slip-plate, Magnetic, chalkboard, many primers that have that "sludge" of solids at the bottom of the can. Turn the can over, let it sit, turn it back, let sit, repeat a few more times... trust me, it makes the final mix a lot easier. I use a similar brush on product called EZ-Slide Graphite Based Coating which I purchase from my local TSC store and looks exactly like that being thick in the bottom of the can before a good stiring. It dries quickly above 70 degrees between coats and can be re-coated every couple hours, I did 3 or 4 coats back at the start of the season in April and it's still working pretty good, but after cutting a much larger acre yard I still have to redirect a strong garden hose spray through the chute at certain areas because grass clippings still wants to cling to places that the wash out port doesn't remove.

My riding mower deck is 20 years old. I'm rebuilding it now with new spindles, pulleys, blades and belts. It was really clogged up with old grass and mud when I tore it all apart. I've got it cleaned out but it's a touch rusty and shows some corrosion so I doubt I could apply this non-stick product on an old mower deck like this one. Not sure how well it would adhere??. You must have the weight of the ENTIRE world on your shoulders then. Takes maybe 30 minutes to do. Have you ever washed a vehicle? If yes, why? Maintaining your equipment well plays a role in its lifespan and prevents excessive wear and tear especially in places that are more vulnerable to failure if not properly maintained. Think of every old house vehicle boat equipment tools etc you’ve seen and thought/said that it had been well taken care of. They all have at least 2 things in common. They’ve been maintained properly including cleaning. This is just part of the “cleaning” part of maintenance and using this makes that a faster and easier process. By doing so, it’s also saving me time giving me more time to use in other places where it’s needed.

It's kind of sad that mower manufacturers haven't devised a material or means to keep the deck grass-free. I just bought a brand new electric mower even though my older mower was still working fine. It was showing signs of rust and deterioration and thought perhaps that was due to the buildup of wet grass on the metal deck. So I'm trying my best to keep my new mower deck clean after each usage but it's been nothing but a pain in the rump keeping up on. The graphite coating works somewhat while mowing, works best when you have a deck wash. From PVC, I made a pipe with 3 places to spray water under the deck when the blades are on. The deck just sheds the grass when being washed. You would be amazed at how abrasive grass is, you will have to recoat during the season if you want to keep the deck slippery, I mow 2 acres. The graphite coating definitely helps mowing wet grass, but you will still have areas where it will buildup, but it won't stick to the metal and washes off easily.

Love your video's specially this one! I have a old Yazoo Kee's 36 inch mower that the grass sticks to the deck very very bad. It mows on average 8-10 lawns a day. I am going to really clean the deck underneath very very good and then apply 3 coats of rust oleum metal protective primer 8 oz can and then 3 coats of rust oleum protective enamel gloss black 8 oz can. But for the 3rd coat I will add Just enough slip plate to the rest of the 8 oz can of paint to be able to apply the 3rd coat of the black paint. I am thinking by adding this to the paint it will give it excellent adhering properties to the other 2 coats of paint. Then will apply a couple good coats of just slip plate to finish it up. I know this sounds like a lot of work but it should hold up hopefully a whole season and less build up underneath.

great video and product, i work in heavy steel and at our plant we have used this and other various products that are similar to it, whatever our wholesaler happens to have on sale fro us, i recently transitioned from a gas powered mower to an EGO 56 volt battery powered unit and its fantastic, my old house i sold was a large property that took about 3-5 hours/week to maintain in the summer months and almost equal in the winter months here in Central Canada, my new place in smaller by quite a bit, a neighbour suggested i try Pam cooking spray on my mower deck, so i did the same as you cleaned it up good and let it dry properly the coated it with Pam, well it lasted a summer and works rather well and if any grass stuck to it , just a quick wish with a broom cleared it off, the deck of the EGO is synthetic, not sure what exactly , it works well all the same, 9 bucks for a big can lasts 2 years, i will try Slip Plate this spring when i pull out the Mower and give it a try, I really like the idea for the snowblower, i spend a good 5 or minutes cleaning mine off each time i use it, if this saves my the clean up and promotes longevity to it , lets go 👍

I've got one of those mowers and the way I stop grass from sticking to the deck is simple. I put it in the garage and forget about it. The coating they put on them is pretty good and lasts several years easy. The biggest problem with those mowers is they come with a collecting bag but the X blade on them isn't for pushing the grass into the bag.

I have a small lawn business and I tried this on one push mower and my Toro riding mower. Works great for places that don't receive a lot of grass rammed into it and keeps rust down. Anywhere like on the bottom ends of the mower where grass is pushed up against hard, it doesn't last long. Like a week or two. The cost of the product and what is does, I think it might be better to use an anti-rust for rust concerns. For keeping the grass from clogging the mower it's not worth the cost now. Still a good idea, but you need to reapply rather frequency.

I live in Northwest Ct where the ground is very moist. The grass is ALWAYS clumping inside and around the chute and on the grass (24HP Husky). The spring time needs mowing every 4 days to stay ahead. I also have a cabin in Granville NY. The ground there is dry, shale stone. I can mow 12/16 inch tall grass and nothing underneath. Come back the next day, hit again and it's gone. I've been considering an EGO electric mower but they warn to not use water to clean under the deck (and never cut wet grass). Based on how my current TORO Super Recycler gets loaded with stuck on clippings after each mow that requires both manual removal of the big chunks and a follow-up wash with a hose (hose port standard on deck), I can't see how I'd be able to keep the deck of that EGO clean. IF this stuff works really well, it could be the answer I'd need. However, after one short mowing session in this video I'm not that impressed. I can do that well with my TORO if I just spray some vegetable oil under the deck before starting to mow. How long does this last between applications, and will doing multiple coats improve the result?

I used to buy the cheap throw away mowers from Walmart. I would cut the grass and stick the mower back in the shed. After one season, the mower deck started rusting through like a car from before the 1980s. Now I cut my grass when it's dry and bag it, not mulch. Now I have a Husqvarna that is 9 years old and a mower with the craftsman name on it that is 4 years old. Neither have that thick mat of grass that holds moisture that causes rust and I don't have to scrape it off scratching the paint off in the process.

The amount of time and frustration is painful when having to clean under the deck, sometimes, multiple times during a single mow (my loan is thick and attracts to the mower like a magnet). I will definitely use this product. To aid in wear as you describe, what about (1) multiple coatings (someone below mentioned this) and/or (2) abrading with a low grit-count (like 60-80 grit) the surface prior to application? Abrading creates a much higher surface area but would need to be coated properly to smooth over the abrasion with Slip Plate; may need multiple applications. The abrasion allows the application to adhere strongly because of a stronger mechanical bond to the surface.
@GarageGear

Multiple coats would probably be fine. Go for it!

It's a gel that I paint under the deck. After the gel soaks in the surface rust, it leaves a slick coat. So after I mow, I prop up the deck and scrape the grass with a putty knife. Then I spray WD-40 under the deck (takes maybe extra 5 minutes after each mow). I like these products, because some good movers would probably rust out before they stop running. Not sure if I will use Slip Plate, because there is 20% paint left under the deck, the rest is surface rust. But I can make it last a long time now with a little care. Saving some $$$. Also, I can't flip my mower up like a push mower, Slip plate does look like a messy application.

The putty knife is doing most of the job.
@chrisradano
@chrisradano 2 дні тому
@@ByeByeBS It doesn't stop grass from clinging to under the deck. But there is a layer of oil between the surface rust and the grass. The grass is easier to scrape. I still need to clean the deck, but the rust is pretty much neutralized. Also I park the mower in the garage, if I don't clean the deck the garage stinks like rotten grass. Strong.

I used WD-40 Silicone Lubricant (water resistant) spray on the underside of my electric mower. Left it on its back for a few hours to "dry" (baste?). It's the PNW, 240 days of rain. Tried it out on a non rainy day, with the grass still damp. AMAZING result! Even took off the dried crud from the last time I mowed (a few months ago due to incessant rain). Fortunately the lawn was covered in leaves and didn't allow the grass to grow during the freezing cold. Anyway, I'm going to stick with the easier SPRAY method. Maybe I'll sharpen the blades too. BTW, I have also used it to polish the car (do it in patches, spray on one cloth, apply; then shine with another) and on rims, after power washing. Lasts for 3 - 4 months, beading and gleaming. Did I mention PNW and rain?

I just started using WD40 silicone spray and it has been tremendous. Started using while collecting thatch from dethatching. Prior to spraying was having to stop almost every pass. After spraying, no stopping at all. I put it on and let it sit on the drive in the sun to "bake in" prior to use. Thinking about spraying the mower deck as well.

Opinion on Ceramic Coating the Snowblower? (I know its not the season but my blower gets 3 seasons every 1 season as i take care of my Classy Senior's + Vets Driveways for them)
@GarageGear
@GarageGear Рік тому
Hey Pete! That will work and probably last about a season or so depending on use. However it does take a bit to put on. If you apply it to the entire auger housing, and chute it can take a bit. You have to apply it then remove it just like a car wax pretty much with a light buff. And if you have any rust spots then it’s useless. This slip plate would actually protect that which is why I’m interested in trying it out. You’re a good man for taking care of your neighbors. Thanks for watching

@@GarageGear no rust, i wash it and keep it Proper. In the n east we get snow which has been turning to slush ice and got the summer and fall im going to go for it this season. Thank You for the kind words, i cant stand seeing my neighbors struggle while their neighbors do nothing Plus! I get to see my neighbors and i enjoy that (they have no filter lol) Thanks for the Insight! Thats why i stay here for my help, i went to HD and they said "Dont follow the service manual" 😄 And they were right, they even put in heavier fittings for me in where the auger attaches to the shroud and leant me a blower in case so i could still take care of my neighbors. I love this ch - 0 Bs, Always Accurate info, the content for me and winter is great im going to order one of the shovels you flip and can angle because i broke my back in 3 spots in a diff. Time and place in my life (got a little ptsd) so this warms my soul even when im out there for 2 to 4 hours (they have horse shoe driveways which are big). Any recommendations for a grease gun for the auger, i dont have any use currently for one other than the snow chucker. Nothin fancy just get the job done.
