How to Set Up a Static IP on the Raspberry Pi (with Raspbian Jessie)
In this video, I show you how to set up a static IP on the Raspberry Pi. Static IP's are useful if you have problems with your IP address changing frequently. There are only a few steps, so it shouldn't take more than about 5 minutes to set up. I'm using Raspbian Jessie here, but the same process should also work for recent versions of Raspbian Wheezy too. Just look to see if you have the /etc/dhcpcd.conf file.

Thanks, worked perfectly! Although I could not log back into my Pi after reboot. (connection refused on port 22) so I was fearing a did something wrong in the config file. But after turning the power off and on again for my Pi, it worked. Don't know why but if someone else is having the problem, try the same before freaking out!

Thank you, Mr. Basics. Very general question here. If I set up a Pi with a particular static IP, can I connect to wifi through it, so that if I do an IP search on the web, that's what comes back? Furthermore, what location would it show? Especially if I can choose my own IP address. For example, what if I want to have a Milwaukee, Wisconsin IP so that I can watch "local" Packers games, no matter where I am via my SpectrumTV app? Or a Toronto, CA IP so I can play poker online? How does one go about determining where the IP is located? And if I take the Pi with me to say, Mexico, am I still connecting through my Milwaukee or Toronto location? I don't want to invest in learning too much about this whole thing if I'm understanding the basic premise incorrectly. Thanks!

awesome video man. I went through like 10 links and nobody was able to do a clear explanation of what is going on, what are the risks, why things have to be done in a certain why and so on and so forth. +10

question: what happens if my raspberry pi is off, my computer gets assigned the same static ip as I gave to my raspberry and then I turn it on?

2:25 - Helpful tip for anyone watching this video. When you highlight text in PuTTY, it automatically copies it. So you can just highlight what you want to copy, change focus to Notepad, and then CTRL+V. No need for CTRL+C ... which is good to know because if you're inside of a text editor like vi or nano, and are trying to copy text, you don't necessarily want to send a CTRL+C signal to the text editor.

i'm trying to connect my laptop to rassberri with just lan cable and without router because i don't have one. so i just configured static ip in both the devices and tried to setup network between them.it appears that network have been establised but when i try to ping(to check whether they are able to communicate or not) my windows laptop from rassberri pie then it is not able to ping but when i ping my rassberri pie from laptop it ping successfully. My real problem is actually that i am not able to ssh from the laptop to rassperri pie through ethernet .the description about pinging i gave just because i thought it will be related to same problem because of which i cannot ssh from laptop to rassberri pie,and that the ping description may help you to find the solution to my problem..please help me to fix my problem, and be able to access my rassberri from laptop

i just bought a Huawei mobile wifi E5573, and i connected my raspberrypi to it, but when i tried to open google, youtube or any browser it says no internet connection. Is there any idea on how to solve this or how to connect my raspberrypi to a mobile data/mobile wifi router?

i fond this video, because after spending days setting up my raspberry Pi with the latest Rasbain Jessie download, after being able to log into my pi once headlessly, the stupid pi, then did not want to lok back in again (using putty) i found out, the IP address i was using the for the Pi, the "correct" one, had changed and was now the IP address for my laptop and the previous IP addresses for my Pi (i had wifi also) now where not even "enabled". All the guides are watch are for when things work perfectly. You know what would be the most viewed video you could ever make? The one where you trouble shoot the problems of re-connecting to the pi. The one nearly all people have, so once again i face sitting here alll day watching videos where everything works perfect, to find out in the real life, Pi's do not work like this and always seem to be changing and not allowing you to connect to them headlessly.

Feel you. Some one else helped us set up the pi. Now when im trying it at my place, i cant find out the ip address of my pi. That's the reason i turned to setting a static ip, im a complete new bie at this. I don't have the address of the pi, the gateway address is easy to find, i cant find a log i page or anything for apple routers.

Does your laptop have internet? Do you need internet on the Pi? If not, you should be able to just remove the static domain_name_servers line from the dhcpcd.conf file. Btw, what are you trying to set up the static IP for?

Same here, my gateway and nameserver are same addresses and I am not able to set the static IP though I'm not sure if that's the reason. (Tried other videos and articles too)

even though this comment is quite old: just erase what you had added in the dhcpcd.conf file, then reboot your pi, everything should be back to normal
