Between the end of March and the beginning of August, over 1 million people applied for unemployment insurance - each week. At the height of the pandemic, nearly 15% of working Americans were unemployed and in total, over 50 million Americans have filed for unemployment insurance since March.
Because of the massive influx of unemployment insurance applicants, millions of people reported their unemployment benefits, which they have paid taxes towards for years, were delayed. Or never came at all. And millennials, who are currently between the ages of 24 and 38, may be the group hit hardest by the economic turmoil of the pandemic.
According to Pew Research Center, 35% of Americans between ages 18 and 29 and 30% of those between ages 30 and 49 say they or someone in their household has lost their job.
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also indicates that among those who are unemployed, millennials are facing longer-stretches of joblessness.
CNBC Make It spoke with young unemployed workers and economists to hear how millennials have been impacted by unemployment and learned how the pandemic has laid bare the critical role of our unemployment system, as well as its flaws.

Do you think the current unemployment crisis will lead politicians to embrace universal basic income?

I don't know about embracing UBI but UBI will be something that would not be totally ignored. As for me, I am in more favour of Negative Income Tax which means if you fall under certain threshold you will get some money otherwise not, which I believe is much more sustainable than giving some money to everyone rather than to some of whom who would not need the money.

I remember some time ago that I saw some recruiter (HR) arguing online that entry level jobs should require some experience and that if you have no experience you should go for internships because you can't perform the job at entry. Then another one came in and said he does not consider internships work experience, so in a nutshell if you are young and want experience sucks to be you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (this was before this crisis even, now they'll probably be even more selective since there are more unemployed people looking for a job)

You're taught this ignorance by your butt hurt professors and Leftist parrents. Well this made me glad I kept my job even though at 38 I'm still not married and still can't afford a house. At least I'm working. You know, you CAN do everything RIGHT and still FAIL. I got a 4 year degree, entered the workforce, moved to another state to avoid high taxes I can't afford, paid off my student loans in full, and I'm still running behind what people consider to be "normal" adult life without a wife and a house. Simply put, I'm lucky and also unlucky at the same time. Some people are lucky enough to be married but haven't been able to afford a house or pay off their student loans. Some people have a house, but can't afford to go on vacation due to mortgage, bills, and student loan payments. It's just another combination of hardship, but still hardship all the same. This latest crisis with unemployment is just going to push people who are already on the edge over the edge and the results are not going to be pretty. Maybe instead of blaming people, we can find a way to look for solutions. That would be nice. Just my 2 cents. Have fun going back to belittling each other in the comments....

@@skeletorlongbottom I'm going to answer this as thoughtfully as possible: She was a flight attendant and appears to be fairly young. The airline industry was hammered. How likely is it she can find another job in the same industry paying the same or better? I am in IT making very good money, and just because "there are jobs" does not mean the next one will pay me the same, afford me the same learning opportunities, or flexibility that I have now. Besides, blanketly saying jobs are not scarce can easily mean her going from a hypothetical Full-time with Benefits $19 an hour job to a "flexibly scheduled" $12 an hour retail job, where she will now make less than unemployment, and not be able to afford where she lives. A lot of people stuck to unemployment because the alternative are hour cuts which leaves them worse off. Besides that, with all the talk of a V-shaped recovery, why wouldn't it be possible they could sit on unemployment and wait out until their job comes back or a better one comes around? She did not choose to start a pandemic.
@skeletorlongbottom
@skeletorlongbottom 3 роки тому
@@balthorpayne She is also apparently not choosing to look into other areas of employment. @spirorevelis7100

My story is pretty simple. I was born in 1975. I was raised with a work ethic and the belief that anything is possible in America. I started working at 10. Worked about 40 hrs a week all through high school. Graduated with a 3.8 gpa and 27 ACT. Was in line for a scholarship to Michigan State. Opted instead for two years of junior college to save additional money. Decided after 2 years to decline the scholarship and join the trades. Advanced quickly as a pipe fitter and made 6 figures within 4 years. Worked for other companies for 10 years total. Started my own company at the age of 30. Been self employed for 15 years now. None of this was random or accidental. All of this required discipline and hard work. All of this is still repeatable today. Moral of the story is don't spend all your time and effort and focus on making excuses for why things are impossible rather than doing the work of creating your own success. Additionally, not all efforts are rewarded equally. Make sure you are engaged in something that the world actually views as valuable and has a need for. Lastly, you only get one life, live it like you mean it!!!!

"All of this is still repeatable today" Flat out not correct, and this is coming from someone successful. I don't get why you midwits have to rationalize your own good fortune by acting like you didn't get even a little bit lucky in life. I sure did, and I'm not afraid to admit it. You got lucky by being born in a time before mass immigration and inflation destroyed wage growth and hyperinflated the housing market. I got lucky by being born with a good brain and having a parent who forced me to get a degree in something actually useful. That's all it was for both of us: good fortune that was capitalized upon. Stop acting like you flew to the moon just by pulling on your bootstraps. There was a rocket underneath both of us.

@@datanon3059 There are TONS if jobs in the trades that pay over 100k and no one lining up for them because they are too good to do manual labor. So yes, it is repeatable. I also started my statement with I was raised with a good worth ethic and the belief that anything is acheivanle in America. I acknowledged that right off the bat. And that is what it takes - a work ethic. I didn't care if I cleaned toilets, it flipped burgers, or pressure washed trucks, or cut grass. (Because I actually did all those things among others as well) I did what paid the best at the time and took a better opportunity whenever it came along.

That happened to me in 2012 during a bull market with a hard sciences degree. It happened again in 2014 in a bull market with a Master's. And it happened again with a law degree. College is a massive scam. Although I never cried about it.

As a millennial, it honestly feels like our group has been impacted the worst for the past 10+ years. There have been times where I wish I was dead. I never thought I'd be struggling at 34 years old. I thought I would have a husband and at least one child by now and some type of career. All I have is bad health, depression, and my mother. I just simply have nothing else in me.

That's why they say do what you love, at least the you'll have something, even if you're not rich. And if what you love can be useful then start a self employed business. My dad loved to fix cars, so he always had a job. My mom was always about money so she worked in a place where she would always have a job, a hospital. In this time, really think about where you want to go next, you could end up changing your life

Only had one job since graduating in 2015. That went from 2015 to 2018. Haven't found a qualifying job for my degree since. I had to work with my family just to stay afloat.. it's been extremely degrading.

I graduated in December 2019 the covid-19 lockdowns started in 2020...It's been hard getting work since employers are cutting down on cost buy reducing employees and online work is unstable because the payments dates are never exact.. Its frustrating and draining.
