*Big rant*, but does anyone else think of "Take Me to Church"? "If I'm a pagan of the good times, my lover's the Sunlight" I can't help but remember the music video and all the sweet moments between the characters there -- as well as the horrid ones. I feel like this song describes that story too, in a way. Or a story of another same sex couple ("the tale's the same, told before and told again"). But it lingers in the weight of a secret and how their love would bring it to light. They lived in the darkness of night--"in cold and rain"--before they met them. It would be perhaps more peaceful to "shun the light" and live life pretending to be blissfully ignorant. And yet like the night giving way in the face of sunlight, they've fallen in love fiercely for the first time ("whose heart would not take flight? ...flew like a moth to you, Sunlight"). In doing so, they betray the religion that guided their life ("the moon as acolyte") Falling in for the other made them realize that they were never straight ("at last can grant a name, to a buried and a burning flame, as love and it's decisive pain... all that shown to me was something foreknown to me"). And now their life has changed. The image they had of themself and the world they knew before fades like a photo under sunlight - under falling for the other ("these colors fade for you only"). But in the end, it was the life they gladly chose. They'd wake up together each morning, with no regrets. Despite all the pain, of having a religion which damns them, they'd do it again in a heartbeat.
