The students don't OWN the universities. Campuses are owned by the state or a private entity. This is why students can be arrested for TRESPASSING if they ignore repeated requests to disperse, esp. after being told they risk arrest. For one thing, it's a liability issue for schools if they allow people to camp there when a confrontation could erupt at any time. Who knows what a provocateur might do or what their motivation might be! There's also the litter issue and the danger of a fire starting by accident. The police can't keep a police presence large enough to prevent a riot on campus for days on end. They are trying to prevent any potential for the situation to become a confrontation. Crowds can get out of hand very quickly when people are emotionally involved in what they believe is a righteous cause. It's like if they were protesting inside a mall. Just because a site is a public SPACE doesn't mean it's publicly owned. The mall management can ask people to leave & if they don't, they can be arrested for trespassing. If the protesters were in the Metro Park & the park closes at a certain time, they would need to leave. It's not depriving them of free speech. It's just saying, "This space is not available for you to use for this activity right now."
