While everyone is complaining about the lack of waterproofing on the bottom; my concern is the trailer itself. Habor Freight trailers of that size are NOT rated / approved for highway speeds. Everything from the bearings to the frame itself should have been reinforced or replaced with better parts if this was going to be anything than a one time trip camper. Wouldnt be surprised if its already broken down and disposed of.
@OrganicAlumination6 днів тому
Yikes but ikr like Im making a tiny home ig and I seen the wheels said not for highway use after I bought them because they look real enough, like I can put air back in them and their from harbor freight, but the bike lane technically isn't a highway lmao 😂😂😂

Maybe I just live in pothole city but the idea of the whole "kitchen" bit only being secured by two simple latches and the cooktop was stored there without being secured in some other way honestly triggered me. No way is that highway safe.
@DannyB-cs9vx3 місяці тому
Check the speed rating of the tires, (should be printed on the side of the tire). Many small tires are not rated for highway speeds. A tire rated as "D" is only safe up to 40 mph as an example.
@rodx55713 місяці тому
The HFT trailer tires are only rated to 55. However i put a 1000lb touring bike on them, and inflated to 50psi and ran from Wyoming to Texas at 80-90 mph and they did fine. If they are under inflated it will chew up the tires. Especially in Colorado.

This is a really awesome concept. I think I am going to make one of these. 0) They make similar trailers out of aluminum. and they make structural foam with aluminum sides. 1) If you keep the fold up kitchen box on the side, you should at least have it taper in the front, rather than be at a 90 degree angle to the wind -- this is for the sake of aerodynamics. It would not be hard to add that on to the box you already built. 2) If it were me, I would paint the entire underside including the steel with truck bed liner paint -- to protect it not only from water and gravel but also from salt in winter. 3) Your entire camper would fit under a 10 x 10 pop up canopy tent, or even a 12 x 12. If the length of the trailer was oriented from corner to corner of the pop up you would be protected from rain while getting in or out, and also while cooking. You could also mount a windbreak. In travel mode the canopy would easily fold up and fit in the camper or car. 4) If you want to have solar panels, the 10 x 10 canopy cover could be made out of clear green-house plastic in stead of canvas. 5) In the kitchen area I would make a counter top table with fold up legs that is only 16" wide and six feet long. I would place it perpendicular, to make an L shaped kitchen. You can never have too much counter top. 6) What about an ice chest? I would carry it in the car, and have a little fold up stand to get it high enough off the ground. 7) Where you put your TV, I would put in a very small charcoal burning heater to stay cozy -- but that is just me. 8) A rechargeable small fan placed near the open window the way you made it, might be enough ventilation, but I would mount a star gazing skylight and also a fan in the ceiling. Nothing wrong with redundancy.

For solar, it would probably be better to use potable panels that can be placed out in the sun while this unit is in the shade. Open flame should be avoided in a unit this small. A fire would quickly use up the oxygen and could be a carbon monoxide source. It would be better to have one of those electric fireplaces.
@colinkelley64932 місяці тому
@@sharonoddlyenough Good thinking. 1) I am now going to park the front of the trailer pointing to the south; transport the solar panels in the trailer: and mount them on the tongue when camping. 2) I am now going to park the trailer in the canopy, sew up thermal fabric sides, so it becomes like a thermal tent, and then, when needed I will put a tent stove in the tent -- also a bathroom tent. Thanks.

Good point on streamlining. However, the speed and overall quality in how this was made are impressive. Great job on the build looks like you thought of everything the only thing I would have done different is you're putting the base together I would use treated wood just because there's going to be a lot of moisture between that metal and the base of the camper so treated wood for the base would really help with all that moisture

Awesome camper! One thing that can be improved is aerodynamics. I recommend putting the kitchen on the back of the camper, as how it is mounted on the side is a big brick, and it will likely hurt the aerodynamics a lot. One small issue I see is that the doorway has no weather buffer area so if you've gotta climb in during a downpour, you're getting your bed and sheets wet. Not a major issue if you've dealt with worse, but certainly not ideal. I'm quite familiar with sleeping under wet blankets and it's NOT a fun way to wake up, particularly if you don't have a hot shower to get your body temp back up quickly.

Good build. A few notes: window should have been on opposite side for cross-ventilation... cook top outlet should have been inside the folding sink so it's not visible when sink is up. folding sink should have a beveled front to minimize wind resistance. Or better yet, part of the tail end like all mini tear drop trailers. tail lights should have been surface mounted to the back unless DOT regs said otherwise.

You should have made it where the camper is bolted to the trailer with 6 bolts where the threads are on the bottom, under the metal frame and the nuts can be removed. That would allow you to remove the camper and use the trailer for hauling things considering the camper won't be used for 99% of your life.

The one thing you should really consider is to waterproof the bottom, the rot will start there and everywhere you screwed into the side for power or signal lighting needs caulking to prevent water penetration. I used to build tiny homes and a lot of people miss these things or don't consider it but those areas will be the first to go when it starts to rot.

@sharonoddlyenough2 місяці тому
Nice. Mostly great, just a couple nitpicks. The standard in North America is to have the door on the curb side of the trailer. If you're parked on a busy street, it will be harder to safely access the interior of the trailer. Consider making the outside kitchen smaller and portable so it can be taken off and stashed inside the trailer or tow vehicle. If you used 120v wiring, I hope you left your junction boxes accessible. There's a few more, but I'll leave it at that. It is a noticable improvement from your $1000 trailer video. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

Cool build. Here is a tip for skinning a curved surface in plywood. The long axis is its axis of strength, it bends waaaaaaay easire the other way. I know this from skinning a 12' tall 8' diameter round entrance tower on my parent's house, I bent 2 layers of 3/8 plywood on the entire exterior, the first sheet I bent like you did, it was almost impossible. After that, I discovered if bends easily the other way. The more you know as they say. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
@DavidHancock2 місяці тому
Few things, it's a great little camper, but the weight doesn't have that much to do with fuel use (except on inclines and when accelerating.) Aerodynamics and drag will affect fuel consumption way more. Having the galley on the side is a ton of added drag. If you can mold some aero into each end, that would help. On the galley, I love that the sink connects to a hose. That's fantastic. Did you water seal the underside? (In one shot, it looked unsealed.) If you drive in the rain without the underside being sealed, water will rot the trailer from underneath in time. Looks like a fun little camper, though! Very comfy.

I've been slowly building up my Prius as a stealth Camper. So it just looks like a parked car with blacked out screens on the windows. Definitely need to nail the blackout screens better. Maybe replace with fitted silvered reflective surfaces. But it's on a budget that makes this look like Dubai. Made because hotels are expensive but I like traveling places. Student living. I could add on a $30 camp stove to make my kitchen more functional. The bed is a bit cramped. But that's due to the small fridge needing space, and me not solving the back seat space issue. Some people make a plywood board to extend legroom. Budget stops me there. But even without proposed upgrades it's quite comfy and more than good enough for multi day trips. 😊

Great job! You both need to wear protective eye gear though.

Sure wish I had your skills and talents!! Do you sell plans to build it????? That is something I could haul with my Corolla! Thanks for sharing! Great build!

Would have been neat to add solar and a battery to make it truly off grid. 2 ways to charge from a flexible solar panel and a power inverter from the car battery. Cool build, though!

Next time mount the sink w'the faucet set on the end and then allow the kitchen to be tilted down w/a canopy good for inside and outside and then have access from the inside too for those rainy days!

Very cool build and I love the simplicity. I am curious if you waterproofed the bottom of the trailer? I didn’t see that step of you did. Also wondering Scott the short tongue length to the car and can you make tight turns with it? Anyways love the vids great job as always!

Fun to watch, and great job! The fold out kitchen was a surprise. Makes me wanna go build something! But for all of our safety, I won’t. lol.

Very nice. Now, can you please make a similar camper that allow the sleeping of two to three people? ---- Just an idea for basically a slightly larger version with some improvements to streamlining and durability, and possibly have a battery storage with a way to add solar panels.

Harbor freight also has a slightly more expensive trailer - HAUL-MASTER 1195 lb. Capacity, 48-5/8 in. x 96-1/4 in. for 520. +35 for your 3ed wheel for manually moving it around. + 160 for 4x 2000 lb jacks run your bed as either 40x72 if you are under 6' 40x80... then use the extra 16" for an outdoor galley :). run prime power with a solar generator, add solar panels to the roof. internal LED lights. while a larger "heaver" version, you could still keep the entire build under 800 lbs fully loaded. even adding a diesel heater. Lets note that 300 pounds is over the tow weight of a Smart car... BUT some electric wheel chairs and mopeds can tow that. but if you are going for something really small like a Mitsubishi Mirage, honda civic, Kia Soul, any of these little things are generally around 1500 lbs towing, so a little 800 lb trailer no issues.
