A number of years ago, a friend and I were in the National Forest hunting. We found a tree that grew out of the ground, about six feet up, it took an abrupt turn to the left in a 90 degree angle, went straight for about five feet, and then another 90 degree angle straight up. I’m not sure what cause the tree to grow that way, but it made the perfect sitting platform for two dudes, overlooking an open area that just cried deer. We sat there waiting for the sun to come up, just knowing a herd of deer would come into the open area and grouse on the tender foliage. As anticipation was about to peak, there came this blood curling, banshee like scream, that could have been a cougar or any apex predator. I’ve always heard about the hair standing up on the back of the neck, and friends, it did so with me. Everything in the immediate area became ghostly quiet, including us. With fingers on triggers, eyes bulging trying to see in the grayness of the dawn, I said to my friend, what in the hell was that? Without missing a beat, he replied, I don’t know, but I hope it doesn’t climb trees. With that, as soon as it became light enough to see, we climbed down and neither of us ever ventured into that part of the woods again. So, is Bigfoot real? I don’t know, but I do know that there are things in the woods that go bump in the night, and I suspect you would not want to run into them when it was dark. Larry from Texas

Living in the Western NC mountains like Luke, I can attest to how quickly the weather changes. We normally see better weather than is forecast, so it really sneaks up on you when it goes the other way.

I was suggesting to bring pats of butter and have one right in your coffee cup. Have some way to whip it for a minute after you make the coffee. It wii revive the body from tired and cold. Whipping creates a medically energetic drink. Any hot drink - tea or soup - would work as well.

Around here (Southwest Louisiana) and in TX, when the sky turns green, that means there is a tornado watch/warning. I used to say that even the air was green, but I think that comes from the foliage on the trees and plants against the gray sky. Still, the night that a tornado went through our subdivision, when I looked outside, it was the middle of the night, the air was green and I saw our lawn chairs go in the opposite direction from the way the wind hit the side of our house. I leaped off the bed, grabbed the two kids out of their beds and we sat in the tub in the inside bathroom, with no windows. Tornadoes really do sound like freight trains! I was cold all the way through my body, no joke. I asked God to please keep that thing up in the sky where it belonged and He did. It took the tops of the tall trees out, on the street in back of us. What a mess that was. !!!!! (LOL!!!)

An aerodynamically designed hot tent with a titanium wood stove is a beautiful thing and would be preferable in this situation, but I wouldn't mess with a twister in the bush either. This is an information and entertainment channel, not a "true survival" challenge. Thanks, Luke! 👊

Tall trees and wind scare the hell out of me. When you hear a 50ft+ tall tree starting to crack, before it falls possibly on top of you...dude it's so terrifying, especially at night. Anyway, that's my life in East TX. haha I really respect those people on Naked and Afraid who are camping under stick roofs with widow-makers above during thunderstorms and tough it out, and heck a just the sound of a thunderstorm outside of house walls or the cabin of your car is so damn loud. Our ancestors were so tough..and lucky to have survived it.

His camera didn't capture what is in those forests. There have been Dogman sightings, AND Bigfoot sightings, in the forests of North Carolina. There are mountain lions, black panthers, wolves AND black bears out there. There are reports of feral people, and occasionally a fugitive on the run. Domestic terrorist Eric Rudolph spent more than 5 years on the run, eluding the finest law enforcement America has.... by camping in the Nantahala National Forest near Cherokee and Graham Counties, in North Carolina. There is no telling WHAT is in those forests, including unknown and undocumented creatures, including large predator birds.

That's little birds. Their predators won't approach you so if you're going in approximately the direction they want to go they will travel with you. Hopping in leaves a flock can sound like footsteps.

One thing you could do for the stove, which is really neat, is to clear all the debris down to the dirt around the stove then burn. Should help and ease the feeling of potentially starting a forest fire. Lol

I'm in Australia so we don't have bigfoot, however we do have another name for what is arguably the same thing, a big hairy man or "Yowie". In all my outdoor experiences over several decades, I have never seen anything like that, though others say they have. On the other hand, I have seen some out of place creatures, like a Papuan Harrier in NSW at 33.6 deg South. This is way outside of it's reported range, I was kayaking on a major dam & this large raptor flew directly overhead. The markings from that view are unique & unmistakable. That's how I made the identification from my Slaters Field Guide. There is nothing even remotely similar in that guide. It's possible I suppose that some other exotic species looks similar, but if so it just isn't in my field guide at all. Another time while driving on the south coast highway, I saw what looked like a pangolin waddling across the road at night. So that is just weird right? There are some house in that location & pangolin are a heavily trafficked species apparently. I have seen 8cm wide cat like tracks on a service road after rain. Another time I saw a large black animal running along the bottom of a gully in a crouch, using this terrain to cross a clearing. Then it dove into a thicket of bushes behind a flock of ducks gathering to roost on the foreshore of the dam I had been fly fishing. We all know just how sensitive wild ducks are to any noise or movement. Well the ducks didn't notice a thing. That was enough predatory behaviour from an animal obviously above my weight class, so I got out of there with many a backward glance. I have never fished that location again, the Farmers Ck arm of Lake Lyell NSW.

that little firepit's intriguing. I have a diamond tarp in my pack for just such rotten weather, but haven't found something that's both large enough to give out decent heat, yet small enough to be functional under a 10 foot tarp. this thing solves that equation, so I bought it. Thanks for your great work on researching these products.

A guy I used to work with lived somewhere in a very small town in the north west US growing up. He was pretty accomplished at parcore and decided one winter to play a practical joke. He got some giant rubber feet to fit over his trainers and after getting out of town above the deck so leaving no trace walked a couple of miles down the road and put them on. The then walked in the snow back to town and around all over the place at about 3AM and was not seen by anyone. He then took a different route out back to the road and reversed the process. It was all over the newspapers in 1986 round his area.

The thing to worry about in the mountains when the winds are that strong is a tree (or several trees), or even just a big branch coming down on top of you. It's best to go ahead and get the hell out of there while you can. If you did decide to hunker down and wait it out, I'd do it under a rock shelf or something a bit more protective than a tarp. Great video as usual!

I've been checking prices on some of the Gear you showcase and well that Tent is way beyond the price of any tent I would buy for any trip though I can afford it, but a sucker and his money are soon parted is what I always say about ALL GEAR. I have two similar tents, the Eureka Solataire when it came in a dark Green ($75.) and a Snugpack Ionosphere.($69.99). With a 10x10 Tarp these tents are perfect even in the strong Desert Winds which can reach 60 mph! I have only canceled a trip twice in 40 years. But then again we could not see what was coming because the Electronics did not exist then. The second time is after 1 foot of snow had fallen and we were worried that the Sierra Passes would pile up too much for us to get through.. I may buy the Stove/Firepit. It is reasonable priced and is "Lighter" than my current Wood burner. Some advice to those who read this.. BEFORE taking that Wood Burner on a Trip check first with the Forest Service. It is not allowed in many National Forests and Parks... Thanks for sharing....

I am a skeptic like our host,. But at the same time, I don't know if you are familiar with the stories of the Apeman of Africa. Decades of stories of a giant human like creature roaming the high places in Africa, considered total nonsense by the scientific community of the day. Then someone brought a Silverback Gorilla back to be studied.... No European had ever seen one before.... There was a whole lot of truth to those stories in Africa! So I try to keep an open mind here, even if I've never seen any compelling evidence.

Research gear, go for the tried and tested, and regardless of price don't cheap out. I learned that the hard way. Your gear makes the trip and could mean more than just comfortability so even if it's just a couple pieces at a time you gotta go for the bomb proof stuff. Buy once cry once. Target essentials like sleep system and tent or hammock. I hike the appalachians alot and live in maine but I can't go back to tents after hammocking and they aren't cheap if you want quality but still a little cheaper than alot of tents out there I carry a big tarp but you gotta be weight conscious if you wanna camp at those real hidden gems

I believe I would have waited until day break or storm to pass. You are dry, out of the elements, and warm. Unless I heard trees falling all around me it would still be a hard judgment call because one could still fall on you in the dark while on the move. Safer to see what's going on than to guess in my opinion

Good move getting out of there sooner than later. Two weeks back we had 70mph+ sustained winds with gusts over 90, sky was chocolate brown all day account we've been in a drought for months now with no relief. I use a grill sheet under my stove. They 're light foldable and you can size them to your stove with scissors like a ground cloth foot your stove. It doesn't stop all burning but it keeps to minimum. Thanks for the video.

We had a scouts camp out in northern Idaho in the late fall. I think it was at Elk River. When we arrived, it was alternating between snow and 33F rain. So I set up a big staging area tarp that later became the cooking tarp before any tent setup. The boys were not very confident about their tents, for that weather, anyway. But we had taught them to "handle it" instead of complaining. They asked to look at the spare supplies and saw a bunch of 8 foot poles and cheap blue tarps. They set up all their tents really close to each other and built a tarp city over their tents using the poles and hope. It worked! Many problems are solved by more tarps. There were other improvisations too. They made me proud. Of course that was the campout that my old NF June Bug gave out on the waterproofing. I watched a little river run through my tent as I perched and slept just above it on my sleeping pad. I went off to Sports Authority (R.I.P.) to get a Rock 22 the next weekend. That was our Dutch Oven weekend and all the cooking proceeded without any cancellations. Pork chops and apples, yum.

It was probably a good choice to get out before the weather got really rough, but you’re in the dark and if you’re not sure of your route you could be stuck out in the storm, lost, with no shelter set up. Like you said it’s always a judgment call.

There was so much to like about this video: beautiful setting. Really great test of using tarp set up against rain, strong wind and storm. Really smart gear. You conveyed the sensation of what it was like to be there so well! You showed why having smart set up made such a difference in your comort level, and safety in an unpredictable event. You were lucky walking out you did not get knocked down by the wind with 70 mph gusts! I love storms!

Many is the time that the weather had “other” plans for my camping excursions. You did what I’ve done dozens of times. Stop and set-up right there. I never let “gethereitis” spoil my trip. For me, the fun is in the trip itself, more than reaching a particular location by a particular time. A good meal, a hot cup of coffee, and a good nights sleep will put me back in focus, and ready to continue.

Nice set up to get you out of the elements Luke love the relaxing sound of the wind blown trees and sure do Love the look of that stick burner looks like a great size. I saw the first big foot video but yes bear do scratch trees over turn rocks and yes variouse animals make very strange scary sounds , But hey if people want to believe in bigfoot so be it. Forest sure looked spooky in the eve , WOW Luke that was a nasty storm i think one of the worse you have been in . very scary think you made a good decision. . Loved this video. Ontario

I have just found your videos so I will check out the Big Foot video. I am a believer in the possibilities of undiscovered animals in our forest. I am also a believer in facts. All that being said life would be very boring without mysteries to solve and new things to discover. Never stop believing in the wonders this world has to offer.

In poor conditions, to stay put for now! Is usually the best thing to do. Keep warm and dry and fed, and most importantly ‘safe’ til the weather subsides a bit and daylight arrives. Relax and don’t let a timetable stress you out. Camp can be put away slowly under cover till the last minute, then it’s pack away with your tent/tarp and resume your adventure. It isn’t too hard. I enjoyed your vid. Thank you.

These adventures of yours are awesome! Thanks so much for making them. I set up my tarps with a loop of strong bungee cord through the grommets, then the cord through the bungee loops, as I feel it reduces stress as the wind catches the tarp like a sail...... I have a Tenth Wonder 4.5x4.5m tarp with doors .

we learn from your videos how you must keep yourself mentally happy and alert to be cautious not afraid be prepared in advance anticipate the weather and take remedies try to stay reasonably dry and warm anticipate conditions and take those hard decision in time in serious way and stay on safe side

Nice video. Recently tried tarp-hammock camping for the first time ever, also first time solo. Medium rain / 8 m/s winds. I was comfortable and used a similar setup as you did here.

Just wanted you to know I purchased this camp stove. LOVE IT Well made, easy to put together and the hemp rope and pocket bellows are a bonus. NICE piece of kit!
