What resources did you use to learn to create your electronics prototypes? If you can teach a course yourself, that’ll be even better for us beginners just cause other people who talk about this stuff can be pretty unexciting / hard to follow.
@observer5768

The future is the gig economy and so education is a whole industry that would be serving tens, if not a hundred million people in the US alone. You can consider creating your own beginner, intermediate and advanced electronics prototyping courses for like Udemy or even sold through your own website. Since you already create content with your podcast, this education part of your business could be a real money maker, not to mention, really fun.

"So what did you do recently?" - "I ran a Kickstarter for some LED Bowties and placing and soldering the components onto them SUCKED. So I built a pick'n place machine, ran a Kickstarter for that, started a company and now I can make hundred Bowties with 10th of the effort 🎉" Try reacting to _that_ conversation. My brain would just go into "buffering mode" 💭 xD

My thoughts on the reflow controller - If you think the problem has been solved for that cheaply, make a video about the oven that works well and focus on cooler and bigger stuff. Like new P&P functionality or bigger production or something. Also since the oven is a mains powered device, it can be dangerous so you may find yourself in the safety certification rabbit hole for different markets, that have different laws. Sure, feel free to make it as a cool open source project if you enjoy making it, but i believe that it will take focus away from the P&P project and i'm not a huge fan of that, if there's already a good solution. PS: At work we use the Reflow oven kit from Beta Layout that does what you are making and it does it pretty darn well for a good price. So i think that problem is kind of solved.

Great video. I developed a PnP machine 12 years ago. I used very simple ideas, but the most difficult problem I faced was pulling the clear film off of the tape (I used weights back then like on your wider tape). Your system is so much more advanced than what I cobbled up. I am happy to see this type of development is still going on even with the prices for full assembly are pretty cheap with the exception of low quantity runs. This type of project can also teach you so much, from the feeders, to the vacuum system and regulation, to the optical closed loop positional and rotational placements.

I think you have a great approach to decide what to work on. There is no use to work on stuff for the sake of it unless its a fun hobby project. Solving things that aren't out there yet or improving things that do not work well at a certain price points, are the valuable targets to work on from a product perspective.

Nice work! Did similiar calculations for part of my EE degree, but insted calculating at what point the cost becomes better for the production. So i had a yearly production plan and was comparing between hiring people (avarage salary for my location) and giving them cheap soldering irons or hiring less people and buying those expensive panasonic pick-and-placers. There is quite a bit of litrature written on that subject.

I program PIC micros and the hex file loads in about 2 seconds, so I just touch my programming cable to the board without a jig and hit go. I have played with arduino, but it seems HIDEOUSLY long to compile and program. Is there a hex file and quick programmer for arduino? By the way, what is your favorite solder paste?

How reliable does it handle 0402? My current system is a Quad 4000C that is technically capable of 0201 but even 0402 is a crapshoot. The parts tend to bounce out of the feeders creating all sorts of problems. I have to watch every run from beginning to end unless I am running 0603 or bigger.
@randomgeneration3450

I think the reflow would be worth the effort if the cost could be dropped under the $400 mark. Granted, I know there is the more diy way of modifying the toaster oven which seems to work very well and also you still have to have some sort of profit etc for it to be worth the time/effort. Still would be very cool, but I'm interested to hear about your other ideas of what should be the "next step"!

I love to see you abandon the reflow project, because I'm working for a year and a half to ship an OS Reflow solution and I don't have as nearly as 20k subscribers as you do. But I still will try to sell it as a kit. So: Bad, bad Idea! Don't do it! Ever! As Elon said it: You have dug your own grave! You are gonna lose millions! Jokes aside: There are Reflow solutions out there. And If you have anything to add to them - do it. It's time to make the gear better than ever. Commercial solutions already lack hobbiest features. A Ready-to-market product, which sturs up the industry is much needed! You're the sole reason, why anybody is telling me "there no money to be made" is wrong. You started in the worst of times and still are going. Don't know, if you're going strong - but you're still around and making a living for several people. Keep up your great work.
