Dual motor Tesla tires last longer than rear wheel drive Teslas. This is because on RWD Teslas (and all other RWD EVs), acceleration and braking are mostly performed with the driven wheels. You'll wear out those rear tires quickly, especially if you drive crazy. The last set of tires on our AWD Model S lasted 60,000 with at least 10K still left on them. Changed them due to the approach of winter. We didn't even bother rotating the tires after the first round. Even wear all around. AWD Tesla's are awesome on slippery terrain.

I've been driving a Tesla Model 3 since September 2019. I can say without any hesitation it is the best car I have ever owed. I'm 72, so I've seen a lot. I have a 240V charging station in the garage, so I just plug it in when it gets down to about 30%. I charge it to 90% which takes about four hours. No more stops at seedy gas stations. Tires can be a problem, but no more than a 400HP Mustang with an 18yo behind the wheel. It is temping to use than accelerator. Brakes should last forever. When you learn to drive the car, most of your driving will be done with a single pedal. This is because when you take your foot off the accelerator, the regenerating braking begins to work. For the most part the brake pedal is not needed. When you come to a full stop, the car holds itself in position, even on a hill. no need to keep the brake pedal mashed down. Tesla has spent many years refining their cars, ICE car companies are just throwing EVs together. They are building compliance cars and really could care less about building EVs that are real quality, they just want to get them out the door and make them someone else's problem.

The tires won't wear out 3x faster than an ICE car if you drive it normally. Sure, the motors can produce a lot more low end torque, but you don't have to apply it 100% all the time. That's up to the driver. It only weights about 600 lbs more than a similar ICE sedan. That won't cause the tires to wear 3x faster.

Yeah, I "did the maths" a couple of years back (South Aussie, with some of the most expensive electricity in the world!!), km km it was basically the same cost petrol or electric (UNLESS you could charge off your own home solar system). And even then you'd have to be "home" during the day (not out working) to charge it. All well and good until you want to take it on a country trip, and the range becomes an issue. Or the battery freaks just outside of warranty. That's before we look into the increased incidence of battery fires (I was a volunteer firefighter for 20 years, electric cars are going to be a PROBLEM). My EV (Hyundai Ioniq5) has about the same size, power and weight as my previous car (BMW X3 with 258 horsepower). But in the first months of using it, it lost lots of rubber 🙂. I just rented a Model 3 for 2 weeks. Never driven an EV before. The car drives extremely well. The suspension is perfectly damped and is soft, without feeling disconnected. Roomy car, quiet car. Drives how I hoped it would, and charging it was pretty seamless. The problems was interacting with the car. You drive a car, and then you have to use a laptop, while you drive, to control it's functions. Not great.

@@palebeachbum Cost is whatever you would pay for your tires...the stock tire is a Michelin with a little extra sound deadening inside which bumps the price about $20, but you can use the standard version or put any other tires on the car. What you find with a Tesla is that virtually all maintenance either disappears or is really darn cheap. You know they have a 12V battery like a normal ICE vehicle and when that goes bad after 4 years or so (like any other car), Tesla comes to your home or office and replaces it for free under warrantee. They do the same thing on the second battery because you’re probably still under warrantee then as well. When was the last time GM or Toyota stopped by to replace your battery for free? Also, because of regenerative braking...you only need a brake job every 150,000 miles or so (and yes, normal brakes...nothing special). And no spark plugs, wires or oil changes among other things. Don’t let people talk you out of a Tesla, especially now while the $7500 tax credit is active. You can drive these cars half a million miles if you take reasonable care of them.

You're 90% correct on the tire wear. I find it hard to believe that weight only is the factor. My Hellcat was at least as heavy. And had a lot of tire wear. But mostly because of driving habits. If you have a soft, sticky, performance tire (like the pirelli's) then that's gonna happen despite weight. Also, Tesla alignment isn't great from the factory. A good race shop (Peitz performance) knows how to optimize alignment based on your driving conditions. Straight, cornering, etc. These cars are definitely not optimized for tire wear. It seems more performance based and tire choice decisions in my experience. But they do ware fast.

I wonder if Scotty is taking into account that over the last couple of years most tire manufacturers are making EV specific tires designed with the added weight of an EV in mind. I would argue that driving style plays a much bigger role than the weight of the EV itself given most new EVs are coming from the manufacturer with OEM EV specific tires designed to account for the added weight of the vehicle they are going on. I have an EV and I do not drive "spirited" and I rotate my tires regularly and I do not see any more wear on my EV tires than I did on my ICE vehicle tires. What people seem to forget is that most car manufacturers sell cars with more power just a software tune away. BMW are renowned for putting identical engines in different cars with significant differences in power. They dont give you all available power so they dont overlap with their more expensive models, its pretty common practice. Tesla offered out the performance upgrade to customers with the benefit of keeping their warranty, something other manufacturers have never done and instead of getting praised for it, they just got criticised for holding back power. Its a no win situation, either way everyone moans and bitches about it.

Not to mention, Tesla didn't originally offer the Acceleration Boost. I'm pretty sure they found ways to optimize the software tuning so it would deliver more power from the batteries through the motors after they originally launched the vehicle. Would that be any more fair, if peoples' cars got better for free than if people's cars got better at a fee? People really just like complaining.

@@AttilaTheHun333333 Software controls a lot of the components in an EV, including how much power goes from the battery to the motor. It's a lot easier than the tuning of an ICEV, but it's not trivial. If you give the motor too much power, it will overheat for example. It's possible that Tesla at first was conservative with their tuning and limited how much power to give the motors so they would last longer and not strain components, only to later find they could push their components a lot more without significantly wearing them.

@AttilaTheHun333333 3 місяці тому
@@Pehz63 Software controls basically every component in an EV. There is no such thing as tuning on electric cars. Electronic components have a rating…every single component does actually. Usually if things overheat or go over the temperatures they are designed for, it shortens their life expectancy. This is universally true, no matter if it’s a whole motor with electronics or a single capacitor on a board. As you kind of said it yourself it’s all about compromises of power vs. wear. Yes one can optimize cooling, power draw and efficiency with „tuning“, by making the components work more efficiently together. This happens mostly with more experience of the collaboration of the components over time. However, I don’t see that as a service but as due diligence of the manufacturer towards the customer. It’s their hardware and their software, it’s their responsibility. I look at it like this…if after years they optimize the software of the EV so it can deliver more power without compromising the life expectancy of the vehicle or the components, they fucked up the software in the first place and it’s wrong to charge for them correcting it. Why? Because every single customer until then was basically a beta tester for the manufacturer and made it possible that they get the data to optimize the software later on. Firmware updates and optimizations should never ever get charged for.

Made it so that I could use the longer charges for lunch and dinner. Took 2 days each way including a motel stop at the middle of each trip. Same dynamic when we went from horses to cars. It was acutally harder back then but the transition was still incredibly fast. Right now the generation of electricity needs to go up 25-30% for a 100% switchover to EVs. This pricing was revealed during the bidding for chargers in Texas. @@larky368

@@larky368 Tesla is building super charging stations at a high rate. Currently there are enough that you can travel anywhere in the US & Canada, and they're never full. Tesla is also signing contracts with lots of companies to install charging stations. BP just made its first $100m order out of a planned $1b. Hilton and Best Western are ordering tens of thousands of overnight chargers to install at thousands of hotels. It's coming. The extra power will be made possible by more nuclear plants, solar panels installed at the charging stations and the megapacks super batteries that will charge during off-peak hours & save that electricity for when it's needed (that presently just goes to waste)
@bvoyelr
@bvoyelr 4 місяці тому
That's about the hardest route you can take in an EV as well. I go up and down the east coast and it's even easier. I actually encountered a full charging bank once. I just drove 15 more miles up the road and that one was empty. To answer @larky's question about there being more EVs.....you don't charge exclusively on super chargers. You only do it on road trips. So the need for super chargers will increase at only a fraction of the rate of EV adoption. There are also already so many charging banks along the coasts that I'm completely unconcerned with availability. And they're still building more. The main concern I have is Tesla's mapping algorithm being good enough to route you to available charging banks with hours of notice. It would be cool if at some point they let you pay to reserve charging windows at certain stations (possibly for an additional small fee?) just to remove any doubt that you'll have trouble with availability.

If you are going to complain about tire pollution then you have to include pickup trucks in that argument. Pickup trucks have become a lot bigger and heavier. They have those large V8 that produce a lot of power. You also have the diesels that produce a lot of torque. So, they are just as much to blame for tire pollution. The wear on the tesla tire has more to do with the driver's lead foot than they weight. The tires do wear faster, but if you drive normally, they last a long time. My tires lasted 40k miles.

🔴 Last year I had ordered a Uber lift, A remote controlled Driverless electric buggy showed up , Great color low profile sapphire metallic blue sedan , Plush 2 tone leather interior, it was so quiet I couldn't tell if it was running or not, ‼️

The thing about software changes to unlock features already there - that practice actually saves customers money. The market wants a range of different versions, with different performance, at different price points. Building versions which are actually physically different costs more in inventory, production scheduling, all sorts of things. If you make 1 version, and get the differentiation via software, you can sell all of the "different versions" cheaper than if you'd had to engineer them as physically different.

Teslas don't weigh any more than regular cars. My Model Y has 14000 miles on it and the tires look brand new. Tire wear depends on your driving style in any car.

You can even increase the power today on a regular gasoline car just by doing an engine optimization with software. Which of course is not free

How reliable is the touch screen? I have some tablets that need a firmer touch or do a double touch (if I don't let up on the image fast enough or maybe my hand is too cold).

No issues with the screen in my 2 years of ownership. No issues with anything.

No problems with my ~6 year old Model 3. Its parked outdoors and it routinely gets to 90-100+ F during summers here.

Absolutely fair point about paying for speed. But kinda like how you can get anything on your phone but you have to buy some apps and no external mod was needed to use the app 🤷‍♂️
