Recently, I decided to upgrade from a basic EV charger/wall outlet to a level 2 charger that I could easily plug into my newly installed NEMA 14-50 outlet in my garage. Good news! I just received my unit of choice; the Autel MaxiCharger AC Home 40A EV Charger With Separate Holster. In this video I share my thoughts on this unit, how I installed it, and of course I test it out to see how fast it charges my car!
To purchase this exact unit I installed and showed in the video, click on the link below:

Very helpful review. I think this is the one for me. Keep an eye on the NEMA outlet, they do have issues with melting. You are in bed, at night, charging off peak time and this can BBQ. Feel the outlet with your hand, if too, too hot, you have an issue. Warm is ok. Yes, the quality of the outlet does count, but still. I am going to wire mine directly, by myself. Might as well have a 48A on a 60A breaker. I have 200 panel and plenty of power, my house is on natural gas, no heavy loads. AC is 30A. #6 wire, more then enough for 2 foot run. Good luck with the charger.

The Emporia app is awesome. I don't have their EVSE, but I use the home energy monitoring Emporia Vue with an amp sensor on my Clipper Creek EVSE wire (among other household things).and now can track usage by minute/hour/day/month/year across all vehicles using that EVSE. Our 2 cars have used 2mWh since installation of the Emporia tracker earlier this year.

I bought the same Autel unit about 3 months ago, picked it up on sale for $443. Works great to charge my 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe, takes only about 2 hours to completely charge the 17kwh battery pack. I like the Wifi features allowing me to track usage, set amperage level, and schedule charging. The cable is a bit stiff and wants to coil in a specific direction, but it isn't too much effort to put away after use.

I had a 60 amp service and Tesla wall connector installed in my garage before getting my Model 3 and Model Y. It has worked perfectly for almost two years. ComEd offers a substantial discount once you register your cars with them. You might check if your utility does the same. It lowered my costs from 15 to 10 cents per kWh. Temperatures in my garage do not drop below 50 degrees, so the cars' batteries are happy as well.

Nice, Dave! Glad that you finally upgraded your home charging to Level 2. You'll really appreciate it -and so will Kathy! Personally, I would have opted for a 48A EVSE, but I hear that these Autels are capable of bi-directional charging -a real plus, IF you can actually tap into that function via your breaker box. Having a dedicated Autel app is nice, but at least I can monitor my home charging via my Tesla's app. I assume the Genesis app also allows this…? Oh… and I liked getting a glimpse of Bailey in this clip!

I’d derate down a bit, maybe 24 amps. Big continuous power I prefer THHN in EMT conduit, and hardwired if possible (buy a 2nd more portable EVSE for travel and ditch the 14-50).
@Jeddin
@Jeddin Рік тому
Just because you can pull 40 amps doesn’t mean you should. You should consider dropping the settings and only charging at about 20 amps. You will still wake up to a full charge. You’re used to living with 110 v charging. 20 amps will be more than enough for your needs and 20 amps will be a lot less wear and heat on your breaker box wiring.
@michaelcummins5974
@michaelcummins5974 Рік тому
It looks like he has 6ga wiring, which is rated for 50 or 60 amps, depending on a few things. You're supposed to keep continuous load at or under 80%, so a 50a circuit is meant to handle 40a continuous. If it's a 40a breaker with 6ga wiring, I'd simply swap the breaker for a 50a, as the wiring and outlet are designed for 50a. If running 40a circuit, should only charge at 32a or less. Going half or less is silly over-conservatism.
@Jeddin
@Jeddin Рік тому
@@michaelcummins5974 electro boom says different. He has a video on this issue where he de rates charging his Tesla down to 5 amps. His point being even if the wiring is rated for continuous 40 amps 40 amps will still generate more heat and wear than 5 amps and will impact its longevity and health over time. So he recommends derating down to the lowest amperage you actually need. Or are you arguing there is no extra heat and wear from carrying 5 amps, 20 amps or 40 amps? A simple touch test answers that. When I charge at 40 amps even with circuit and outlet rated for 50 amps the wiring gets noticeably hot
@michaelcummins5974
@michaelcummins5974 Рік тому
@@Jeddin sorry, been too busy to get back to this. Yes, there will be some relatively minor heat losses and very minor additional wear on the wiring and components of the charging system to use closer to rated capacity amperage. But it's very minor. One could calculate the heat losses by converting 220v 40a electricity into it's resistive heating potential, then measuring the actual heat losses from the wiring and coming up with a percentage that went to losses. It would be tiny. The wear on the wiring and devices, assuming using quality components, also nearly imperceivable. What you're not taking into account, is that low voltage/amperage slow charging is vastly less efficient than charging at higher speeds. There are much higher conversion losses at 110v vs 220v, for example. Also, the car will be using energy to condition the battery, run the diagnostic software, etc. Slow charging is pretty wasteful. Very high power charging like at a DC fast charger also has it's problems with accelerated battery degradation, so it's best to avoid overdoing that. If anyone knows if an expert who has done a deep study on the electrical efficiency of different charging rates, and comparing that with the effects on battery health, range, and longevity, that would be really interesting. It's hard to study though, as different battery management systems with quite a bit differently, as well as weather effects, etc. My somewhat educated guess would be that in colder weather, higher amperage 220v would be the clearly most efficient method in all cases. Warmer weather might be a little murkier based on battery management differences... But that's getting beyond my level of expertise. I'd also like to see more conclusive data about the differences between nightly topping back up to 80% vs going a few days at a time between charging sessions. I see conflicting info about if each charging session had the degradation effect, or if it's really more based on effective full drain/charge cycles. There doesn't seem to be consensus on that. If fewer but deeper charge sessions is in fact better for battery, that would be another reason to charge at higher rates, as very slow charging wouldn't replenish the car overnight.

Have the electrician change out that outlet!!! And I hope they used a torque wrench on all connections.... Those cheap Leviton/Legrand ones are a fire hazard for EV charging. They need to get a Bryant/Hubbell. If they disagree with you then they're not very good electricians. Or not for EV's anyway. I'm sure your friend Tom Moloughney will say the same thing. I'd also recommend moving up the EVSE a bit too and using the lag bolts into the stud, don't use the drywall anchors. That's for if you're only mounting on drywall as a last resort. Edit - Just saw this was from a year ago, lol. Dunno why it was at the top of my list... Just weird UKposts things I guess.

Thanks for this content Dave! Why not just charge directly off NEMA-14-50 outlet on 50amp circuit? Why do you need this Autel unit? As you probably know, Tesla lets you start, stop or schedule charging, as well as increase or decrease amperage from the app as well as adjust charge limit. So, what’s the value add with this Autel or any other L2 charger? Does it charge faster than using my old 40a Tesla charging cable directly from my NEMA 14-50 on 50a circuit? Thanks in advance!

@ManfredvonHolstein
@ManfredvonHolstein Рік тому
Congratulations on finally getting a proper charger. Most people don’t seem to realise that level 1 chargers aren’t just slow, but they are also inefficient. The charging losses are crazily high - easily around 20-30% or more! That’s because the cars have a lot of overhead controlling the charging. Hardwiring would have been better - even if 40A plugged is according to code, this doesn’t mean it is entirely safe. And if you want to turn on and off a hardwired charger, it helps to install it with a breaker in a convenient space, possibly next to it. The cable of this charger is quite long and yet quite thin, so it will be interesting to hear how warm it gets at 40A and therefore how big the charging loss will be…

Hi Dave - I bought this unit on the strength of this video. However, the purchase experience from Autel has been a bust. The unit "sold by Autel" and shipped by Amazon came totally unwrapped, missing pilot screw and other mounting hardware - nothing like the neatly packed and fully kitted unit you displayed in the video. Also, the first unit I attempted to purchase (with your referral link and discount) mysteriously disappeared in transit and I had to re-order for full price. Shenanigans? Let me quote just a few bits from those reviews: "Be Careful This Will Melt at 40amps." "Overheated and melted. Junk." "Worked great until it melted." "Do NOT use this for ANY EV charger." "Do not use with Tesla Chargers!" Have your electrician pull that thing out and install a true "commercial" plug. You'll probably charge your cars "overnight," right? "Oh, the humanity!"

It all depends on where your breaker box is located compared to the run you need to make to the outlet. I would say anywhere from $400 for an easy install and up. Sometimes, your breaker panel is maxed out and you need to get a piggy back panel installed. I know that some houses are maxed out in terms of the amps coming into the house and they may need to up the incoming power from the road to the house (expensive!!). My cost was $1,100 for my situation. My advice is call a few electricians for estimates and then go from there

nice, I bought the Electrify America charger with a 21’ cord, you wasted a few feet of cord by putting the charger above the receptacle. I mounted my charger to the left, very close to the outlet, but the orientation of the outlet receptacle had to be turned 180 degrees, the EA app is very detailed giving many options. Also I installed my wiring from the breaker inside the wall by cutting out the drywall then patching it so there’s no surface conduit, while I had the wall opened I ran 2 wires to 2 separate new 50amp, 240v breakers, so now I’m able to charge 2 EVs at the same time, using variable amperage setting if necessary with EA charger. Note to readers, make sure you get a charger that can be adjusted for amperage output.
