1) My pillow will be sewn with a zipper and Oxford “ears”, this is when a fold of 3-5 cm is stitched on all sides.
Using this diagram you can calculate how much fabric you will need. Where:
1 cm is the width of the seams.
3 cm is the fold covering the zipper, the value can be increased to 4-5 cm.
4 cm - width of the “ears”.
My pillowcase is made from one piece of fabric.
If the pillow is large, then the pillowcase is sewn from 2 pieces of fabric. Then, where the dotted line is in the middle (fold), add 1 cm to the seams.
When calculating the fabric, you should take shrinkage into account, but it is easier to wet and dry the fabric before sewing.
Master Class:
- I attached a zipper to the front side of the fabric and stitched on both sides.
- To prevent the fabric from fraying, I cut it a little and closed it with a zipper. I stitched it.
- I positioned the pillowcase so that the zipper was in the middle. I folded the fold and stitched it.
- I turned the pillowcase inside out and sewed the side seams at a distance of 1 cm from the edge.
- I turned it right side out again, now the pillowcase measures 48x48 cm.
- I drew lines on all four sides, retreating 4 cm from the edge. I stitched along the lines, the “ears” are ready.
Pillowcases of this style look more sophisticated and elegant.
2) In a bedding set, pillowcases and sheets are subject to the most wear and tear.
Sewing a sheet couldn't be easier. You need to measure the length and width of the mattress, make allowances on the sides of the sheet and in length so that it fits well.
The pillowcase is a little more difficult to sew, but with a little calculation, any housewife can cope with this task.
Before sewing, you need to calculate the amount of fabric.
If the pillowcase measures 50x70 cm, then we use the following formula:
- 50 cm x 2 sides + 25 cm flap = 125 cm + 5 cm for hemming, resulting in a fabric length of 130 cm.
- Canvas width 70 cm + 3 cm allowances.
In total, for a pillowcase 50x70 cm, a piece of fabric 130x73 cm is required. If you make a linen seam, then more fabric is used, but lately it has practically not been used.
To make the finished pillowcase look more attractive and, one might say, aristocratic, you can make ears and sides when sewing. This fold is on 3 or 4 sides.
This pillow can be sewn in different ways. I will show one of them, the fold will go on 3 sides. The finished fold width is 4.5 cm.
In this case, more tissue is wasted. If we take the same size 50x70 cm, then we need to add 9 cm to the length (4.5 cm x 2), since there is no seam on the bend. On the sides, add 6 cm on both sides (4.5 cm is the fold and 1.5 cm for the allowance). 6 cm x 2 = 12 cm.
Total fabric you will need for this pillowcase:
- 50x2=100 cm+ 9 cm (fold) +25 cm (flap) + 5 cm for hemming. In general, the length of the canvas is 139 cm.
- Canvas width: 70 cm+ 12 (folds) = 82 cm.
How to sew:
- Hem the pillowcase around the edges.
- Fold the fabric so that the right side is inside. One side does not reach the other edge by 25 cm (to the lapel, valve).
- Roll the valve this way.
- Sew the sides. Turn the pillowcase inside out and iron it.
- Measure 4.5 cm on 3 sides and stitch. In this case, there is no need to overcast the seams; all open cuts are inside.
Ready!
3) Decorative pillows add beauty and comfort to our home. More precisely, covers that can be changed for every holiday. Pillows trimmed with piping around the edges look especially stylish; in this case, the product looks elegant and noble.
I have always liked this type of processing, for all the time I have been sewing, I have only used piping when sewing once - I was sewing the sides of a jacket and everything worked out the first time. At that time, special convex tapes with allowances for seams were sold and this made the work easier.
The edging is easy to make with your own hands. To do this you will need bias tape and cord.
- For marking, I use a fabric marker, which is removed after ironing.
- The fabric must be cut into strips at an angle of 45 degrees. The width of the strip depends on the thickness of the cord. The strips are sewn in several places, the seam is ironed.
- I made stripes for my pillow, 4 cm wide.
- I folded them in half and ironed them.
- I cut out a square 43x43 cm from fabric. The back part consists of two parts that will overlap one another.
How to make an edging:
- First of all, you need to change the foot on the sewing machine to a foot for sewing in a zipper.
- The rope is inserted into the folded bias tape, close to the fold, then you need to stitch as close to the cord as possible.
- I immediately attached the piping to the pillow without this line. In this case, the rounded part of the edging looks into the middle of the pillow.
- At the corners, to create a 90-degree bend, I made notches, not reaching the cord 2-3 mm. When sewing, the corner turns out to be slightly rounded.
- It is important to connect the ends of the edging carefully. To do this, the rope is cut
