The alternator had to be replaced twice (2 x 300$). Then Doug chose to replace known issues preemptively which wasn't really needed. Compare this to his old Range Rover video which almost everything failed with a total bill of nearly 20K USD.

Any car, even a reputable old Toyota, will have issues if you let it sit for months on a little island in the East Coast. 3. These old Toyotas only really show their reliability if you actually use them everyday and not let it sit on the least ideal conditions. Case in point: Victor Sheppard's One Million-mile Tundra. 4. Doug overestimated the LC's reliability and, like he said in the video, asked too much of it.

Doug, I have a 2008 Land Cruiser. Had the same failures ... starter, radiator crack, and idle pulley tensioner. The starter was my fault. I jumped the battery with the terminals on the wrong polarity and that killed the starter and started a small fire on the battery. Thus far, the water pump is good, but I think my alternator is starting to fail. Last week, the car started very weakly and then not at all. I charged the battery and the car started again. We will see if the alternator charges the battery this week. Also, the low range 4 wheel drive switch ( relay? or something ) is broken. Dealership mechanic told me to just keep in 4 Hi. That repair is quite expensive and I don't go off-road or tow anything with this vehicle. Outside of the starter, all of the failures started last year at around 200K miles. I'm at about 215K miles. I hope to keep this to 300K. Love the vehicle and it has served my family well for over 15 years with little to no problems in -40 Degrees temp in Alaska to 100 degree heat here in the South.

That exact feature on my model vehicle is a common failure point. But most owners don’t set it to automatic. While remote diagnostics from a random stranger aren't very useful I would like to say that a trickle charger on the battery might have helped with the alternator issues. With the vehicle sitting for so long the battery gets drained down then the alternator has to work harder to top it back off. For some vehicles you can also buy an oversized alternator to help with that. And I noticed you didn't say you bought a new battery for it, the old one could be failing again taxing the alternator. But I could be completely wrong. Like you said the salt air is hard on a car and could have been causing corrosion to the internals of the alternator which wouldn't be a Land Cruiser specific problem. I believe for your use case that you should just buy a new 3 row SUV every couple of years to keep out there. That's really about the only way you're going to have a "bulletproof" ride out there. Good luck and thanks for the videos!

The idler pulley is something you just do along with the belt tensioner and serpentine belt at 100,000 miles. Not expensive or hard to do maintenance item yourself. I really hope I"m not knocking on wood here - but I literally have not done anything to it since we bought it. And I drive it offroad fairly often, I mean some more serious offroading. It's been an amazing experience so far. I came out of a 2008 Toyota Sequoia that I did have to replace the starter and radiator on at one point (yes it's in a tough spot)... But this LX (landcruiser) has been rock solid so far. I'll just do things as they come up... That's the thing with these toyotas. Best not to pre-emptively do literally everything upfront like you would on a GM/Ford etc as it's usually money not well spent. 100k miles is insanely low for all those troubles you have had.... Anyway I plan on owning for another 2 years then upgrading to a 2013+ model. I think the previous ownership experience matters alot too.

We, over here in GER, had this type of LC, the LC 200, too. But here in GER and Europe it was only sold as a 4.5l D-4D V8 Diesel with 286hp and 600Nm paired to an 6-speed AT.^^ They're kinda rare to find, compaired to the smaller type LC 150 (also known as 'Prado', in a 3 or 5 door body), because of their 'low' numbers in selling due to their higher price back in the days. We had them from 2008/09 up to 2015 to be availible but ot deleted after that without a replacement from Toyota in its class/segment letting the LC150 be the last availible LC in GER/Europe... But even as used ones they hightly hold their pricetags up and even above 300tsd./km on the clock they go for 30k € plus, mostly to be exported to foreign countries in the East or Africa. To get your hands on a preowned "low" mileage (speaking of from under 100k/km to under 200k/km) and well maintained one these daiys, you have to look out paitiantly and have to calculate from 40k € and up in your pocket. Why? Well, because they're literally 'indistructable' in that config with the 4.5l Diesel and the low level of electrical fancy stuff they had compared to all of todays models and types, letting them run 300-400tsd./km at ease (rigth maintance + a basic care provided, like in all longlasting things^^) and they're the really last BIG Land Cruiser to get your hands on aside the new LC 300, which we haven't/didn't get here.😃🤩❤

With that said, there is a Australian alternator that is waterproof. It's not cheap. It's 3K just to buy, if I remember right, but it does make it so that the alternator becomes pretty much bullet proof. The radiator update pretty much fixes the common radiator issue so once replaced you won't have the 100k radiator issue. Bro I gotta see what you've planned for the replacement. That rust looks way too much, more than my 14yrs old fortuner has. So your first protective measure should've been rustproofing dercoat. I've driven though a puddle so deep the water flowed higher than the engine hood. No problem there, it took me home just fine. I should've checked the Intake for water accumulation but I didn't. Short story, next day the alternator went out. Cranked it start with a stick, found new alternator from scrapyard, drove around and its all good again. Last month again the damn alternator broke. This time went for an OEM one, lets see how it does. The point of the story is, Alternator is the only thing susceptible to breaking when driving around in water, given you don't breath in the water and bend rods. Putting a snorkel, rustproofing and Alternator maintenance would've done the job. If your new car isnt a newer LC, I beleive there won't be anything that would suit your needs for this purpose.

I'm starting to believe that he's not really a Toyota truck enthusiast, and he's just exaggerating and lying the whole time, which is rather concerning. Most people who own Land Cruisers take good care of it.

Wool wax is your friend. If you don't want any more rust. I would have slathered it in that before getting it anywhere near salt spray.

wool wax?? what is this 1970?? ceramic coating is the new age not wax

@@mikedelape6609 Tell us you've never been wheeling before without telling us. Ceramic coating might be great for paint on top of the car, but if you are going to go wheeling it will get knocked off the underside much more easily.

Wool Wax is for the underbody. Has nothing to do with the paint. Protects from further corrosion.

To be honest, this rust isn't that superficial. Is Doug going to buy the Lexus GX or Toyota Sequoia?
