7:37 Testing and operation explanation
This is the second part of an electronic system I designed to try to catch the burglars. In the previous video, I showed you how I designed and built the receiver module. This time, it is all about the Long Range transmitter, and how the whole system works. Although it may seem overkill and unnecessary, I chose an ESP32 again as the microcontroller. The reason being is that I want to leave a door open for future expansion. Having Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity at my disposal is always a good thing. Nevertheless, this could have been done with a simpler and cheaper ATmega328P.
As you will see, I made a PCB design that features less components, since I did not need some of the peripherals that I used in the receiver module (0,96’’ oled display, 3.3 V passive buzzer, etc.). However, the most important thing to accomplish was to be able to install the device in a way that nobody could tell it was there. So I did not want to drill any holes in the walls, add visible sensors or any other element that could let anyone know that something new had been added there.
I tried infrared sensors or “PIR”, magnetic reed switches, and some others in order to detect the event of an intrusion. In the end, I decided to go with the RCWL-0516 radar sensor, which is based on the infamous Doppler effect. It is surprisingly sensible even when placed inside a plastic enclosure like the one here shown. It was capable to detect a slight movement of my body from a couple of meters away. In fact, I had to add a resistor in order to reduce its sensitivity, avoiding false alarms.
Again, this module uses the same LoRa 868 MHz module, as a transmitter, to communicate with the receiver. It keeps sending data every couple of seconds to inform that there is no intruder inside the storage unit, and its own battery level. Talking about battery, this module is also equipped with a 1-cell 3.7 V LiPo battery plus an onboard charger IC (MCP73831). This is to ensure that, no matter if a mains power brownout occurs, the transmitter will always be able to send packages to the receiver and alert the owner to the critical situation.
I hope you enjoy the video! Stay tuned for the next one.

A life hack so that the BGA paste does not spread under the stencil. Apply the amount of paste you need on a paper towel and heat it for 15-20 seconds with a hair dryer at 100 degrees Celsius so that the flux from the paste is absorbed into the towel. After you can apply the paste on the stencil.

Suggestion: Fish-Eye lenses up in the light that will send you pictures/video of people in your unit. You can then send that data to Law Enforcement to track down the burglars. While it may add a visible component to the security, you can probably put it in an inconspicuous place.

If you had a way to lock the door on them once they are inside and the door closed... and keep it locked until you arrive with the police. That would be a non-lethal and no chances of hurting yourself or someone you didn't mean to hurt. Like change the internals of the door lock from a regular latch style setup to a dead bolt. You could use contact sensors to know when the door closes and then actuate the dead bolt lock inside the door. The knob on the inside would be useless until either the actuator trips/resets the dead bolt back or you unlock it from the outside.

Even this could be illegal in some countries. In many ways, like holding someone in captivity even if it's a burglar or from building safety standards where it must be a emergency way out. Guess cameras are a reasonable way, but not as reliable.

Question for anyone who does SMD soldering. How do you stop the solder paste getting on the tip of the needle nose tweezers used to place the part, then sticking the part to the tweezers, so when you pull up the tweezers, it doesn’t pull up or shift the part with them? Anyone else have this problem? I’m using quickchip solder paste. Maybe it’s about the viscosity of the paste?

I had the same problem with false alarms because of the radar's range (and because it works 360° around). Thanks for the tip with the resistor. Regarding the problem with the components moving to the side of the pads, this looks to be a 2-fold problem. It looks you used a footprint for hand-soldering, these have longer pads. The regular pads are shorter such that the pads of the component are more or less centered on the pads on the PCB. Due to capillary forces, the component will now float to the center of the pads easier. But there is also an issue with the amount of soldering paste. The stencil should be firmly pressed on the PCB and you should try to apply the soldering paste in one stroke and then pull the stencil off without moving it left to right. Apply a large bead of paste on one side of the stencil and use a this steel spatula, press down firmly and strike from left to right in one fluid motion. If done perfectly, the stencil should be almost clean without streaks of paste on it. You can put unused soldering paste back in the container for next use. There are more ways of applying the paste but this is what seems to work best for us when doing this by hand. It is still not easy though. We have a machine to do this and that is still not doing it perfect all the time.
@EliteWorm
@EliteWorm 2 роки тому
Thank you so much for the tip, I will definitely check the footprint that I am using!

I want to make a tracking radar using a tiny emmiter (mounted on an RC plane) and 3 recivers that sends the signal strength to an arduino to move stepper motors. These receivers are mounted in an angle so there is a hole in the middle for a camera to look through and pointing away from the camera, something like this: \ | / \ | / \|/ The middle line is the camera center and the other two lines are the antennas. The receivers are 120º out of phase when looked from the front. Can you make a tutorial on it?
