Not even close. It has to do with talent and writing. SNL has always had ups and downs. Its first few years were great. In the 80s, the show sucked for awhile after numerous big names moved on. It had a resurgence in the 90s, went downhill in the early 2000s, got better in the mid 2000s, and ever since 2013 or so has went from mediocre to borderline unwatchable. The new cast sucks and the writing is so cringey and politically charged....and very partisan. SNLs comedy used to appeal to everyone. Now, it only apoeals to a select people.

They have a week to write and practice brand new sketches with hosts that may or may not even be actors. Then you have to account for set design/costumes/etc. They are doing this on hard mode for sure, and I respect the entire production for that. Of course there will be bad sketches. Oh yeah, and Vanessa Bayer was criminally underrated for sure.

What’s so funny about seeing Alec Baldwin doing an impression of Alec Baldwin doing Donald Trump ? I’m old enough to remember when SNL used to cast literal sketch comedians in their sketches ! Seriously though , how many times must we be subjected to a sketch where they just tell the same joke OVER AND OVER again and call that a full sketch ? The same joke is repeated until the sketch ends ... Another tactic of the god- awful writers is to pack each sketch with the most amount of jokes possible , which oftentimes , does not allow for the satisfaction of waiting for that one perfectly timed joke or punchline . And the present cast members suffer from some of the worst comedic timing during their sketches . And don’t get me started on the incessant awkward pauses and clear signs the celebrity guest stars are reading cue cards. And these SNL writers try SO HARD to force sketches about current events ...ugh 🤢 These writers need reminding that the best and most iconic SNL sketches of all time , were ones which were just funny , without any relation to what’s going on in the world . People will remember the great sketches with good writing and good acting far longer than a bad sketch that was relevant at the time and had a celebrity in it , for the sake of having a celebrity in it. SNL sucks !

I agree completely! Nostalgia plays a HUGE role in how we remember past seasons. But this current cast of members is truly amazing. Im sad that some of them are almost definitely leaving. But I feel like the newer ones are also great and can guide the show. Its just that the sheer quantity of sketches they write per season is daunting. Not to mention that a lot of hosts just aren't comedic actors, so they can't help but suck the life out of some sketches.

It's honestly insane to make a whole show in a week, from writing to making sets, costume, practicing, etc, it's a miracle it works as often as it does already. A lot of cast membera have had panic attacks on the show because of how intense it is to make it.

@@Sinsteel , well, depending on how far you go back. Samberg and Sudeikis and Bill Hader have been pretty successful, as has Pete Davidson. And two of my all time favorite female players have been Kate McKinnon and Cicely Strong.

Great saying Here's a great example: When i was a kid i used to eat a LOT of spam when i was a kid. Like i remember how happy i felt whenever my gran was cooking spam it was all that i ate. Im an adult now (19) and i felt really nostalgic seeing some spam after seeing some at walmart so naturally I bought the spam, went home with the spam, and then cooked the spam. I almost damn near threw up putting that stuff in my mouth holy crap it was so salty. It tasted exactly how i remember it yet it tastes SO awful now. like i don't even know how i was able to stomach that mess i just threw it away. Never bought spam again that day Nostalgia is a really powerful thing

Yeah, that’s generally how people judge a lot of things. We can’t really help it, I just wish people were honest about it. It’s a mix between genuine nostalgia and just how our brains are wired to compartmentalize things. We only remember the really good or really bad mostly; if we made room for everything that makes us mildy annoyed, empty, angry, bored or uncomfortable, our brains would just be filled with meaningless nonsense half the time. When someone says old cartoons are better for example, they usually don’t know that they don’t mean that. When they say it, they’re thinking of literally the best of the best diamond in the roughs. Not the 2 to 15 other shows they had to sift through and wait to end in order for Batman TAS to begin or some shit. Who the hell out here is actually quoting megababies or Godzilla and godzooky?? Same thing applies to people who say modern music is trash, the 90’s/80’s were better etc. Ask anyone who was over the age of 50 back then and they have little to report to ya, the reason it’s in such high regard has little to Do with era and more to do with the fact that you were just young and naive and the world was still new. Not tryna bum people out but part of the reason sometimes the older things hit and the newer ones don’t has little to do with those things and just do with the fact that you’re just older now, and got more shit to do and worry about. It’s easy to look back fondly at something once it sets in that it’s never coming back. That’s just a product of livin’ in the present.; what’s sticking around and what won’t literally only ever becomes clear well after it’s already happened. Being disillusioned by that sometimes is inevitable Even stuff like the simpsons, spongebob got a ton of hate back in the day by older adults, but we’re loved a lot by younger people. Someone just needs to make a season of SNL with all of the best sketches of the show’s entirety stitched together chronologically into episodes.

That last bit in your comment just sums up 90% of people talking about how bad modern SNL is. Like, have they even seen "Traffic Altercation" in Quinta Brunson's episode? Or "Lisa from Temecula" or pretty much any sketch with Pedro Pascal

when people talk about music today sucking, its referring to pop music and most of the arguments are in fact correct. Go check out Rick Beato's channel where he has a bunch of videos talking about this more intelligently than I can. Bottom line, pop music today sucks compared the 60s because the music follows a boring, repetitive pattern with the same chord progressions. It just feels emotionally empty and stiff. Pop music today uses drum machines, the beats highly quantized and all the voices are auto tuned to perfection which all takes away the human element causing it to lack feel and emotion. There is no comparison between a hit song today and the beatles, for example. Now, SNL has changed over the decades most people hate it because its not as edgy and its too politically correct. You could never have a sketch like Eddie Murphys Mister Robinson's Neighborhood from the mid 80s because white progressive liberals would lose their minds and call it racist. But hey, if you enjoy bland, politically correct humor thats not out to offend anyone, then todays SNL is the show for you. More power to you if you enjoy that. I simply don't enjoy it. I think I found 1 or 2 sketches over the last 5 years that were somewhat funny on SNL

There's also the cherry picking of memory. I haven't seen it last few years, but it has always had peaks and slumps. Every period should be scaled on both average and best moments, cuz there are a lotta skits that lean heavily in the "I guess you had to be there" direction. Corpsing, extended improv, silly voices, impersonations... These can really weigh down the rewatch value of any episode. And man, I have a few periods I enjoy, but after the third compilation video any one will start to really grate on me

I feel this is truly insightful actually. Most people tend to exist predominantly in their own world, and so as they grow older and perceive certain media differently, rather than examining their own change and self actualization, they try and attach an air of objectivity to their new found perspectives. It is part of growing up, but damn it can be frustrating to watch people become so steeped in it that they become inscrutable

idk, one time my roommates and I realized we'd never seen any of SNL before, so we watched a couple episodes. We thought it seemed to be written pretty solely for the young gen X and elder millennial viewers. Of course there was the occasional funny bit, but overall it just seemed like it wasn't for us.

Lol that is so backwards. MadTV was based off of MadMAGAZINE which was edgy comedy for teens. I def preferred Mad as a teen and SNL as I got older, but neither now tbh. Does MadTV still exist even? Lol

i disagree with the vine thing. i remember enjoying %90 of the content back then, sure, there were some really embarrassing people and content were there, but even that was ok because everything was original and people weren't trying to be funny and horribly failing at it (removing sone exceptions of that) there was no pushiness, just fun. also it was the comedy sense we had back then, now it's old but gold. so looking at all the fakeness and cringeness and the absolutely disgusting thing that brings this horrendeousness to us called tiktok now, vine seems like a legendary thing.

Honestly. I went back to show my cousin some old vines and sadly I just cringed at them 😅. Of course my sense of humor has evolved but yeah agreed.
