Independence Day: Resurgence - May Be The Dumbest Movie Ever Made

The Roland Emmerich sequel to 1996's classic action blockbuster Independence Day, Resurgence takes everything fun about the original and promptly dumps it, replacing it with an incoherent plot, terrible characters, meaningless action and over the top disaster scenes. The result is quite possibly the dumbest movie ever made.

I mean, spiritually you could kinda see "Ender's Game" as a loose sequel to Independence Day, since it opens with a narration that explains that an alien invasion got stopped when a pilot bravely sacrificed himself by ramming his own plane into the mothership making it blow up. There's a twist regarding the heroic pilot in "Ender's Game", but in this sequel to ID4 I could just separate it and give the role to Will Smith's character.

@@DeepEye1994 Holy sh#t your right. I sort of did something similar with the original halo series (halo wars-3). That mass effect was the "real" sequel (just replace "Taurin" with "covenant/elites" and the rest fits perfectly.) While the board game warhammer 40k, is the aftermath of ME3 "destroy" ending. That's basically what happened with my wife and I. I told her I had nostalgia from seeing the first movie as a kid in the 90s. And it was a one and done movie. No one really cared about what would happen to the world or characters afterwards. But Hollywood is so lazy and creatively disabled, they can't create new things anymore. The funniest thing is these remakes, reboots and decades-later sequels almost never make enough money to justify a sequel. Hell, most of them flop nowadays. Yet, the geniuses who run studios (who are probably the talentless children of powerful execs/producers) still think it's a good idea to make them.

If your alien civilization has the ability to travel between stars and do so in only a matter of years, you by necessity also have the energy needed to fry the Earth's surface, either with a big laser or some kind of relativistic kinetic weapon (in fact, they could literally just dump their garbage in the Earth's direction while flying past it at near light speed and it would have the same effect as setting off all of Earth's nuclear arsenal simultaneously, except without the radioactive fallout). If all the aliens wanted was the Earth's core, there was no reason they had to invade when they could have simply sterilized the Earth from space, then they could just scoop out the core at their leisure without any resistance.

The thing that always killed me about this movie was that the premise of it as presented in the trailers was actually intriguing and made sense. It has taken humanity decades to sort through the wreckage of these massive alien ships that they shot down (makes enough sense to me). And after years of sorting through alien technology and trying to figure out what it all is, they stumble upon an active beacon (makes enough sense to me). Naturally, they call David to investigate given that he brought down the aliens the first time and understands them better than anyone (makes enough sense to me). David analyzes the beacon and discovers that it’s sending an interstellar signal to the alien home world, and they’re about to be invaded again by an even bigger force (makes enough sense to me). That is a cool setup for a sequel. It had a chance to be good. They just horrendously botched the execution of it.

I'm not an actual physicist, I am merely an engineer.... but yes, you are 100% correct about what that much off center mass would do to Earth. It would in fact pull the whole planet into an egg shape, thus causing earth shattering quakes (as the tectonic plates literally shattered), leveling everything on that side of the planet (except directly under it, but that area certainly wouldn't get off light either). So yes,: One side would immediately turn into a volcanic hell scape with above hurricane winds and ridiculous tsunamis, and the other side would be exposed to [almost] the vacuum of space.... All in all, not a good day for Earthlings.

@setcheck67
@setcheck67 Рік тому
To be fair I remember pretty clearly that the aliens had hijacked into earth's telecommunications in order to learn what was the most important places on earth. In order for their operating system to be able to even understand the telecom of earth's data packets it would need to be compatible with the instruction set. Once that compatibility is in application then it means vulnerabilities exist... The only alternative here is that the aliens used some kind of virtual closed off operating system and I feel like that's not something I would think about if I was them to be honest. We have to remember here that in order to even inject the computer virus they had to enter the mothership, which required using one of the aliens own ships to even pull that off. I could definitely imagine the general talking to a subordinate, "Sir what if we get a virus from interfacing with the xeno scum technology?" "What a stupid question! The only way we could get a virus is if it's applied inside the ship".

Colin, the girlfriend/fiancé in the movie Big Daddy was a hooters girl that went through medical school. I think she became a doctor, it was literally one of the running gags of the movie. Dumb funny, don’t watch it if you like Frazier.

you know what would've been really funny? if the mothership never took off and instead crashed into the earth, completely obliterating it. cut to black, the end. that would've made the film 100X memorable, let me tell you.

The boob jiggle is called “animation deformity”. It’s when you have a breast implant placed under the muscle, and it moves any time the pectoralis is contracted. It’s an undesirable outcome for breast augmentation, and I’m surprised they’d allow that to make it into the movie

Honestly if I can give this movie credit for one thing, it's that they reverse-engineered the alien technology. Seriously, I can't think of any other sci-fi movies where after blowing up the Big Alien Bad, people actually picked up the debris and said "Hey, let's use this shit."

I LOVED that. Unlike the MCU where there's alien shit EVERYWHERE but absolutely none of it percolates anywhere, because OBVIOUSLY the superheroes and villains are the only people with any actual agency. It's a very SMART movie in some ways...just overshadowed by how hilariously DUMB it is in others, much like the original (which is super-dumb, too).

The aliens have tech involving energy weapons, energy shields, and space/ fold abilities. And, the ability to harvest a molten core from a planet. Why do they still use a regular drill?
@mrillis9259
@mrillis9259 3 роки тому
It seems the death Star was the most likely space machine for harvesting planets an their populations. I liked the low energy shot used in Rogue One. This would be effective. Why enter the atmosphere at all? Couldn't a pipe enter the atmosphere an burn up all the planets oxygen? It's only 2% or so lower oxygen an we are all fed.

The best quote for movies like this is from Yoda where he talks about looking to the future rather than focusing on his current task. "Never his mind on where he was. What he was doing!" That's what these cinematic universe people don't get. They're so concerned with what they will build from this that they don't focus on making the foundation firm.

Eventually they got King George VI to tell him that if he did then he was going to be on HMS Belfast too. Churchill reluctantly agreed not to go rather than risk the King.

For twenty years they knew there was a fully intact city sized alien ship in Africa but because of some warlord saying you can't enter my country ...they stayed away from investigating the ship's technology and strategic value (like learning alien troop locations, their troop strength, biological weaknesses, locations of their military adversaries and such. They knew the Aliens were coming back yet they never exploited the ship's value? They had the technology to come in and take the ship...just fly in and secure the area....yet because of a machete wielding warlord they did nothing. This is the plot line which seems particularly stupid to me. Given that stupid plot-line...why Didn't Emmerich make the film about our hero's seizing the ship, taking it off world, making alien allies and kicking the crap out of the aliens that destroyed much of the Earth. He could have had co-oped Alien prisoners who didn't like what they were doing to alien worlds help them fly the ship. He could have made it a film about allies destroying unconditionally the Nazi alien menace. It would have been light years ahead of what we got. It would have made a great space opera with multiple pictures to come...But no.....
