Review :
Pros :
- The large size means comfort! Lots of wiggle room to sprawl out any way that you want to.
- The flannel fabric is awesome! Feels great against the skin. Very soft. Also if feels thicker than other similar products on the market.
- Excellent quality. Very good zippers. Good stitching.
- Built in compression straps are a plus
- Very durable
- Outside material is water resistant. That doesn’t mean that you should sleep in the rain with it but if you are in a damp environment, it will serve you well. Also good for damp mornings in your tent
-
Cons :
Not really suited to take you down to 0F. When the temps dropped into the upper teens, I woke up a few times chilled and that is due to the design. This isn’t a close fitting sleeping bag like a mummy bag so any space that is around you is known as dead space. In other words, since this bag is so big and will be away from you skin, it won’t keep you as warm as a sleeping bag would. With some good thermals this bag will take you comfortably to right at 20F or at least, that is the case for me. Every human body is different and just how warm they sleep will be different too. Keep that in mind.
Since the bag is so wide, the drawstring baffles are useless unless you have 3ft wide shoulders. Cold air seeped past my shoulders all night, no matter my sleeping position with the drawstrings pulled as tight as possible and my head buried underneath.
Heavy
The Flannel isn’t truly cotton flannel, it’s polyester.
I’ve seen reports of the red coloring from the flannel coming off on peoples clothing. I haven’t had that issue but I wanted to mention it. If you order one, keep that in mind.

Hey Luke, Incredible review and thanks for pointing out the issues. I have watched this video quite a few times now to pinpoint all the cons you list. Stay tuned, I'm making the fixes you listed and I'll be excited for you to see what comes out of this review. Also, great comments from people below and I did also watch "Animals scared of farts compilation" AFTER watching this. Thanks again Luke for keeping us on it and letting us know where we need to improve.

I read & then looked up that when a sleeping bag is rated at 0 degrees that means that you won't freeze or die in 0 degree weather!!!--- but you'll be warm or comfortable at 20 degrees. If it's rated for say -20, you won't freeze at -20, but you'll be comfortable and warm at 0 degrees. So always add 20 degrees to whatever it is rated to, then you'll know at what temp you are likely to be warm at.

Dont Forget.. the 0°Rating means that at °0 you will survive, you will NOT be comfortable...but you will survive...the temp rating is NOT a comfort rating...always consider the Temperature where you will be camping...get a sleeping back rated to about 20° warmer than the nighttime temps

Thanks for the review Luke, very well done as always. Wanted to let you know Fjallraven has come out with a 45L pack called the Abisko Friluft that I think might be the best all round bush crafting bag I've ever seen. Simple but all the right features included. Just picked one up at the Fjallraven store in Hong Kong and plan on putting it through the works in the next few weeks. Would be great if you got your hands on one and did a review Luke style after really putting it through the paces!

I have the sportsman’s guide version of this bag and the two person version as well. I love it for car camping. I’d agree that 25-30 degrees is probably as cold as you want to get. But it is comfy! I can’t stress that enough. If you need a bag that sleeps well a few times a year and travels in a trunk instead of a backpack this is a great option.

Thanks for the info. I opted for a slightly different Teton bag rated -25 based on your review and the fact that I sleep cold. I could feel a big difference between the loft of the 0 versus the -25 in the store, as one would expect. Also since I use one or two bags every single night for months at a time, they loose loft and insulating quality pretty quickly compared bags subject to only occasional use. Thanks Again! I will be warmer because of your review.

Luke I see you and kitty are doing some van camping so I saw a very interesting sleeping bag and was wondering if you know anything about it..it’s called the Kodak Z sleeping bag.seems to be awesome quality.. YKK zippers canvass shell cotton flannel lining and something I have never seen before. It is a flap of material that has a hole for your head to go through and it is made to cover your arms if you like to sleep with your arms under your pillow I just thought it would be something new that not a lot of people may know about that you could review. So happy that you and your wife are at a point in life where you have more time to do what you love..be safe be strong be free brother..

I think as someone mentioned the 0 degree is probably the EXTREME number on the EN scale for the sleeping bag rating system. That 0 degree number probably represents the extreme or "Survivability" number at 0 degrees. The 3 numbers on the EN scale in degrees are usually in the 1- comfort, 2- lower limit, and the 3rd- extreme. This would make sense as you stated that around 25 degrees it was comfy. NOTE: most of the numbers seen on amazon or lesser quality bags are probably the extreme number. Most but not all higher quality and brand name bags SHOULD list all 3 NE numbers So unless stated by the ACTUAL NE numbers, LOOK FOR THEM in description. If only 1 number is listed on bag or description of product in the title, assume it's the extreme or survivability range and WON'T be comfy at that number. Example: on a no name bag on amazon if it says it's a 0 degree bag it will probably only be comfy at 30/25 and barely be comfy at 20/15. JMHO 🤔

Great video! Without using a heat source.... How is the temperature measured for this bag? While sleeping in the open or while in a tent for example? it's kinda confusing me cause I will be using this while in a tent. Will it be reliable if in a tent (without heat) and outside temp is 0 f° ?

When I was doing research, they said that if the temp rating says 0 degrees that means you won't freeze to death at 0 degrees. But you will be COMFORTABLE at 20 degrees warmer. So that it's close to the 25 degree mark that you/he said.

I'm not much for cotton in a sleeping bag, being that it is inherently cold when moisture is around -- just body moisture is enough I think. For side sleeper, this looks do-able. Enough width to kick a leg over. For the baffle around shoulders, I regularly pull any bag in with a hand anyway. A canvas outer shell would be new to me, but I understand it is more fire resistant.

Hi Luke, awesome review, I have the Elk Hunter -35F sleeping bag, it kept me fairly warm at around -30 to -25 below, as i was watching the video i went out to my pole barn to find it to look at the stitching because i never paid much attention to it, there wasn't any issues with loose stitching on the outside, but on the inside there were those long strands along the extra fabric where it was folded but that's nothing, very very minor, its just the ends of the stitching, i really love using it on my trips. -Jake

Old video I know, but still good. The Kodiak Z is much better. It has a very unique removable “cover “ where you slip your head through a flap and inside the warmth is trapped inside the bag. Neither your shoulders nor head/neck is exposed to the cold. It’s canvas material on the outside is like the current issue military extreme cold mummy bags, but open and way more roomy. The inside flannel is 100% extremely soft cotton. Near the feet, it’s wider to allow more room with “toes up” when sleeping on your back. Then they have a quilt that attaches to the top for an added 30*F of warmth, on top of an already 0*F rated bag (or the less insulated 20*F rated bag model). But you get what you pay for. The Kodiak Z is around $220 and the optional heavy duty quilt is another $89. I found the bag on sale online for $189. I got both the bag and quilt and haven’t looked back. Both bag and quilt come with their own canvas carrying storage bags too. You get what you pay for. It’s perfect for truck and tent camping, but NOT a backpackers bag. No I have no financial interest in Kodiak. I just know a good product to share. Here’s just one video someone made reviewing it. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/gV2eaotqf6KBwGw.html

On Amazon it has a 56% five star review rating which is pretty poor. Teton makes some pretty good products but this isn't one of them. Other than the cheap price, it doesn't have much going for it. Rating a sleeping down to zero degrees f and not even coming close to that reading is dangerous. Novices to camping might believe this rating and get into big trouble using this bag. It shouldn't be advertised at that temp.rating if it can't perform period!!!
