@@curtisbryce5096 oh the internet.=) just fyi, the transmission issues were with the Tigers. the Panther's issues were with the final drive. And in the case of the Jagdpanther, this final drive was reinforced and made the tank a LOT more reliable.

War always brings technology screaming forward in leaps and bounds. There are plenty of examples but an obvious one would be that the German would probably still be rolling around in panzer 2’s if ww2 didn’t happen or especially if the T-34 hadn’t made such a huge impact

I think I was present as well, they took the engine out because it wouldn't start. Started it without silencers. Loudest noise I've ever witnessed.

@@MrZauberelefant I only remember the Panther engine being outside the Tank and they started it off, which was crazy loud and I tried recording it with my phone but the audio on the video is just static noise because it was so loud haha. I think they had a Stug III, T-34/85, Jagdpanther, Panzer 38(t), Panther, Flammpanzer III, I think a Panzer IV, PzH Wespe and some towing vehicles.

I was in Munster recently. These machines were gigantic. Even T-34s and Shermans were massive. I was baffled.

Just search for jagdpanther wtd. Wtd is a German arms research facility and they also operate wwii tanks. They move it around quite fast. Which gives you a good impression of what the Panther was capable in terms of driving performance.

Me too, but given the Frankenstein nature of the vehicle, the general age of its components, and the delicacy of the design (even fresh from the factory in 1944), I think they have to exert an extreme level of mechanical sympathy when driving this vehicle. The pollution these things pump out at high revs is unreal, too. Might raise some eyebrows in that countryside setting. Remember, the French assessed/field-tested loads of Panthers after WW2 and concluded that 700km was the absolute best one could hope for before the engine needed re-building.... so if I were Mike Gibb, I would be driving that thing like Miss Daisy and hoping for 1400km before having to tear the whole damn back end down again....

​​@@Grantidge69 the wtd is driving its Panthers for 30 years now. There is a report about a Bergepanther who drove 4200km without any trouble including towing other german heavy tanks for 1000km. Maybe if the right metal alloys are used and beeing driven by a decent driver these things could last much longer than the average 1500 to 2000km they achieved in Frontline service mid 1944.

Technically this wasn't a 'tank destroyer' by German defintiion. The Germans had 5 types 1 Panzer (IE Tank) usually 5 man crew. 2 StuG or Assault Gun. This was a heavily armoured self propelled artillery gun which emphasised low profile. It was manned by artillery units and was designed to directly support troops. It has only 4 crew memebers and dispensed with the radio opperator hull gunner. The Germans had noticed that towed artillery often could not be brough forward till night falls seriously hampering infantry advances and so the STuG or armoured assault gun was created. 3 Panzerjaeger (Tank Hunter) this was a lightly armoured vehicle dsigned to be mobile but equiped with a powerfull gun. This is closest to the American concept of a tank destroyer but lacked the turret. The most famours is the Panzer 4 based "Nashorn" or "Rhinoceros" which had the long barreled 88mm PAK 43 gun. Again crewed by artilleryman they were meant to fire from out of range and under cover. One of these achived a kill against a T-34 at 4.2km. The Artillery trained crew know how to survey ranges and the commander often directed fire by microphone from 100 meters away from the tank. 4 Jagdpanzer like the JagdPanther which unnlike Panzerjaeger were fully armoured compard to the tank they were based on but had a more powerfull gun and often more armour. Jagdpanzer, jagdpanther and jagdtiger. Unlike StuG they had a full crew and even more.

There is an interview Bernhard did on Military History Not Visulised with a German tank commander who mentions that the Wiesel (a 4 ton German tracked recon tank) left tracks in the grass that disappeared after less than a 1.5 hours. For a heavy vehicle that crushes the soil it would be days in some cases.

-Technically not really a tank destroyer though it is fair enough description. -The US had 'tank destroyers' which were lightly armored tracked vehicles, open top, fast and with a big long range gun. The idea is they could get to the front line very quickly to intercept an tank breakthrough, find cover and pick of the enemy tanks from a distance. The Germans did have tank destroyers: the Nashorn built on a Panzer IV chassis with Panzer III gearbox and engine with the L71 8.8cm would fulfill that role though lacked the turret. They had special long range optics and were manned by artillery crew and all of the special training that entails. One of these is credited with a tank kill at 4km against a T-34. The commanders often left the tank and directed fire from outside the Nashorn. -Jagdpanther and Jagdpanzer had more powerful guns and more Armour than their turreted counterparts achieved by removing the turret and sacrificing some mobility. -The StuG were different again: more self propelled heavily armored guns manned by artillery men and usually lacking a radio operator and having only one MG.

German hull MGs were mounted in a ball in a spherical housing, of various types, including this one. Alongside the MG there was a simple monocular telescope, the KZF.2 You will find plenty of information about it, via Google.
