Here's my trick for a-mach/a-steach - planes fly at mach speed (motion). Then for me a-staigh sounds a lot like "stay." So at that point, it's easy to remember the ch ones are motion, and the gh ones are non-motion. As always, another great lession!

This phrase - the dog wants to go outside - is one I will get regular practice using. Also, the dog wants to go inside. I have a sign next to the back door that I bought when I was in Vermont, USA, back in 2013. It says - Agenda for the day: Let dog in, Let dog out, Let dog in….. so this phrase is perfect! Love it! As usual, I find your memory tricks to be very helpful. As I live on a farm, I imagine that A-muigh to mean “outside, where the cows are mooing!”

I like that "a-mach" sounds a bit like "amuck," which is exactly what the dog wants to do when he gets outside! Run Amuck! 😂 That will help me remember that word for sure!

I'm getting so much out of this channel! A close family member is slowly pulling a neglected croft on Lewis back towards functionality, and I've been going there a bunch to help, which has made me really motivated to learn the local language. The way you try to provide multiple points of connection for the memory is really useful. The only languages I already know are English and Finnish, and Gaelic feels somehow in between the two in character, so there are a lot of places to make links. Also, the moment I laid eyes on the first video, I immediately thought "yeah this person listens to folk metal" hahaha. You have a very specific vibe, I mean that in a good way.

I am sure it is incorrect in direct translation or in the way the word was put together, but I always think of the lines of houses in many Scottish fishing villages that face the sea. Therefore I have learned a-muigh by thinking of it as going towards the sea. That is, I have thought of muigh as being made from muir, the word for sea . So a-muigh essentially is "in the sea". I think of fishermen heading off from inside their houses towards their boats, heading to work. I am convinced this has no basis in fact, but it is a way of remembering a-muigh that has stuck in my mind.

In some Scots dialects / Scottish accents, “staigh” sounds almost exactly like how we would say the standard English word stay*. “A staigh in Glesga” = “I stay in Glasgow”, so I find a-staigh super easy to remember because of that. *not sure if this phrase will look strange to North Americans, but many people in Scotland / U.K. would use the phrase “stay in” rather than “live in”.
