Want to learn about the American wilderness from a true master? I certainly did! I was invited to join Clay Hayes and his family on their annual elk camp in the spectacular mountains of Idaho. Clay shares his knowledge of woods and wildlife and I get to know his true passions; family, adventure and traditional bow hunting.
While stalking elk from dawn to dusk we discuss tracking, bushcraft, bear defence, plants, animals, sustainable hunting and the unique way their family does life. With three UKposts channels in one family and an endless progression from one adventure to the next these guys do life differently!
Spoiler Alert if you plan to watch Alone Season 8 be aware that I mention how Clay goes.
If you enjoyed this episode and want to learn more, check out my podcast interviews with Clay and his wife Liz (they were recorded around the campfire );

Three nice tigers and two brook trout. I am originally from PA and worked at a trout, musky, n. pike , walleye, shad hatchery for 31 years but now live in CO. In PA brook trout are native but out here an invasive species. By crossing the brown trout and brook trout you get hybrid vigor and a trout that is sterile. The tigers had to be stocked in the last couple of years by helicopter or airplane. It is interesting to hear your perspective of hunting in the U.S. and what you think of Clay Hayes. Thank you Mike.

So awesome just to think about absolute freedom so last yr I chose to b homeless and in a bigger city environment summer and a winter in a 2 man tent and some well known heat vents and heated sidewalk ramps that get bout 80 degrees at night. But my only regret is I didn't film it ,bc it was my first experience doing it with no money everything was a hustle to survive. And now I'm planning to do it again but I'm gonna stash a ebike and a cart and I'm gonna buy a new lightweight drone and a sm go pro and I'm gonna film life on the streets and how to survive with no money. And show and do interviews with homeless addicts and y they choose to b homeless but great video. And to me when I was by myself. Out there I never felt more free but the woods scare me ide have to have a woman or a buddy with me. Other wise it can b quite scary but loved watching u and Clay and what Clay does is absolute freedom.

It’s public land (i think) managed by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). The US is amazing in this regard. Australia has far less area’s of spectacular beauty that allow this amount of freedom. In fairness though, the US has a far greater area of spectacular scenery than Australia. People that haven’t flown around the US and Australia a lot and studied from the air might shoot me down over this comment. Those that have won’t.

The problem with bear spray is that bears will avoid people and it's frequently when they are surprised by people that encounters happen. If the bear is downwind of you, it will smell you long before you see it and leave. If it's upwind of you, a surprise encounter can happen, but that fog of spray will do you more harm than the bear if you are spraying it upwind.
@OutbackMike

Yeah. I certainly made a mental note to be aware of the wind. Hard to achieve when surprised out of nowhere though.

What a way to live. Does he own that land? Or are they camping in a National park type area? I don’t think there’s a single square foot of land in aust that isn’t owned privately or by the government. Thanks for sharing I’ll have to look up thier channels
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike 4 місяці тому
Thanks! The US seems to have a lot of public land with more freedoms than Australia. In Australia I guess the closest would be Crown land but those areas are generally not spectacular wilderness. To be fair the US does have a lot more varied spectacular country than Oz. Much of ours is flat and arid where as they have huge areas of mountains and lakes.

The west has millions of acres of federal government owned land, while most of the east is private. The federal land is loosely considered property of "the people", so we have access to use it within specific guidelines, both federal and state. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rules are more relaxed I think, National Forests and National Parks will generally have specific rules and are more managed and developed by their controlling agency.

@@OutbackMikeAustralia is probably the least geologically active of all the continents so over the millions of years the landscape has eroded until the peaks became rounded and lost altitude. Most of the middle was sea. Nth America being more geologically active led to higher peaks and deeper valleys. Mike, you should have a gander at the Little River Gorge in the Vic high country, like a smaller Grand Canyon and some epic places to bushwalking there. I once skied from Guthega to Thredbo over 5 days and never saw a single person while being the person at the country’s highest altitude. The terrain was a little like what you saw on your journey in the States, lots of scree slopes and snow with perched lakes (Lake Albina). That also reminds me of hiking the Walls of Jerusalem to Lake Petrarch (Tassie) that had more beautiful country than I’ve seen anywhere in the world.

Sustainability? Elk herds are healthier than theyve been in a hundred years. Native wildlife management of apex species in the United States has largely been a tremendous success story. Too many people think back to the 1800s and seem oblivious to the current state of things. Same for fresh and saltwater fishing, its better than its been in half a century. Sure you can point to anecdotes where things arnt as successful, but those are the exception.
