As someone who has been using an i7-4770k since 2014, I can safely say I will upgrade, but I'm amazed at what my CPU can still do after all these years. [EDIT], It's been a year since I posted this, but I have finally reached the point where I need to upgrade. Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3 runs at just 17fps for me. I had bought a 4790k brand-new back then and used it all the way up until around 2019 when I started to get some mobo/cpu problems (possibly due to my long-term OC.) I wasn't able to quite figure it out and I didn't have the chance to test it in a new mobo, but I ended up upgrading to a Ryzen 3700x. Aside from the degradation, the CPU was plenty powerful to handle the majority of my tasks: compiling, gaming, light video work, etc. I get excited whenever new tech comes out and it's hard to resist, but older stuff is definitely still worth checking out especially if you struggle to afford the newer stuff. Still running a GTX 1060 6GB which was upgraded from dual R9 290X. Also note I tend to run local gameservers and have full IDEs running in the background while taking a break and running games. I recently had to upgrade to 32GB RAM for that but the CPU was still plenty for the task.

I went from hardcapped at like 45fps on ultrawide 1440p (DX 11 or 12, settings at ultra or low, RTX off or on) to anywhere from 80-125, depending on RT/DLSS settings. I was like, cool, then played for 3 hours and never went back. Gets old fast. But for something like PCVR it's a huge improvement. Games are now so smooth at 120hz, when before I was experiencing hitching. Not, like, a TON, but enough to be noticeable and just that little nagging splinter ruining some of the immersion. I'm still using my i7 950 PC that I built 12 years ago and it still runs perfectly fine to this day. It has had a number of upgrades done to it over the years such as upgrading the RAM from 6GB to 12GB, changing the GPU from a 9800GT to a GTX 660, added a second DVD-RW drive and added a SSD for the very first time last year to use purely for the operating system. The two existing hard drives that were being used for the operating system and backups are now purely used for storage. I had thought about building a new PC at one point due to the age of it but soon changed my mind when I thought about it some more, the computer does everything that I need it to and it does it very well. When I was in the process of buying parts for it I made sure that I was buying the very best components that I could afford at the time, not only did I want high performance I also wanted a PC that had a lot of upgrade options so I went with the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 motherboard which was very costly at the time (Over £200) but it was worth every penny. Apart from the upgrades that I've bought over the years, the only other stuff that I've bought is various Raspberry Pi models over the years. The current one that I'm mainly using is a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB that I bought not too long ago and have only gotten around to setting it up to use, I've been using it for a while now using the desktop instead of the command line like I normally would and it runs surprisingly well. The quad core Broadcom CPU and the extra RAM that that they have added really does help with the performance a lot.

This is the kind of videos I absolutely love to see on any tech/PC gaming channel. PC gaming is not about buying the most expensive parts and creating a flashy looking setup at your house. Sure go ahead and do that if you can afford it. But, I really find more joy bringing back an older PC to life. Buy older hardware for dirt cheap prices, add in an SSD, do a nice clean install of your favorite Linux Distro (or Windows if you absolutely must), find open source software that runs decently on a given system. There are also thousands of games from steam you can choose from that run decently well for your specific hardware combination. My best gaming days were just playing any game I could get my hand on when I was using a Pentium processor 1GB of RAM a 60GB HDD and 128 mb onboard Intel graphics. It was good enough to run some absolute gems like San Andreas, Prince of Persia series, Age of Empires, Dawn of War and this is what got me into gaming and PC building.

HW Unboxed did a piece on this, and the results were that cache size was most of the effect. Ryzens all have the same cache per core complex, whereas Intel CPUs have more cache as you get higher up the stack. So it's not that much the cores (more than 6, anyway), it's the cache size. *And, while this was unstated, this is valid within one generation of processors. With many games, I can mine on 24 threads (instead of the full 32, but getting about 90%-95% of the hashrate) while playing a game and still get 100% performance in that game. On the flip side, some games simply REFUSE to run correctly if I have anything else running on even a few cores. Even mining on 8 threads and setting the process priority to IDLE simply destroys the game's performance. Hell Let Loose and Heroes & Generals are two examples of this. And then there is my beloved Star Ruler 2 game, which successfully loads my 32 threads to 100% utilization. This, obviously, is a major exception to the general rules expressed in this video. I am eagerly awaiting more games that will let my kick-ass CPU shine. Other than that, the unused cores are still doing something useful... =D

@@iury862 ah, go figure. I haven't been involved in the pc space for a very long time so I'm not up to date on everything but it really does seem to be that way, especially during these recent times when people are relying and needing PC's more than ever.

I currently daily drive a Ryzen 5 3400G with a GTX 1050 Ti and 16GB RAM and its been able to run everything i throw at it pretty comfortably. Definitely an upgrade over what I was using just a month ago, a Dell Latitude E5530 with 8GB RAM and a Core i3 3120M

This makes me feel a whole lot better about building the kids a quad core system for Christmas, as given how out of whack part prices are at present (over the moon to get a GTX1650 at a 2 year old RRP!) it represented by far the best value at half the price of the nearest 6 core processor.

Extremely kind and thoughtful of you. Hopefully the kids appreciate the opportunity they're given!
