Is the presidential election undergoing a vibe shift? At the beginning of the month, former President Donald Trump was performing 10 percentage points better than President Joe Biden in net approval rating. Today that’s fallen to a 4-point advantage. In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, the crew assesses what's changed. They also ask why so many representatives in the House are resigning earlier on in their careers and they take a look at a new poll showing Republican Larry Hogan leading in the Maryland Senate race by double digits.

Gallagher's resignation timing felt so deliberate because he waited until after the deadline before a special election could replace him a few months down the road. So it hurts the Republican majority for those extra few months where they won't have someone to take his place before November.

On one hand, Gallagher did the right thing for the country by leaving a discharge petition so maybe desperately needed Ukraine, Gaza and Taiwan funding can get through the pro-Putin crackpots in the House, and he made sure to leave after the deadline so that the seat can't be filled by Republicans before November. On the other, he left yo cash in at a job, rather than staying to fight the crazies which is selling out.

One of the things you may have missed in the conversation about why sitting congressional members are resigning after 4+ terms is that after 3 terms you lock in retirement benefits, and you've built up enough DC connections/influence that they can leave for a high paying board or directors role and/or lobbying role. That is the goal for many members of Congress - not to provide public service but to make a brand for themselves and cash in on it.

I think Bidens dip, now rise, in the polls is from Democrats wanting (hoping?) someone else to be the Democrat candidate. But, now that Biden is by far the mostly likely, Dems are now comparing him to Trump, and the difference there is stark.

It's not about Republican versus Democrat anymore. It was easy to just talk normally, back in the days of John McCain, about this policy or that policy. We can't really have a normal conversation here anymore, because it's about having a free democracy versus having a dictatorship, with a corrupt dictator out for violence. I long for the inevitable day when we can go back to a semblance of unity.

Video was posted 17 minutes ago and the only 2 comments on the video are right wing accounts posting pro-Trump nonsense. Coincidentally both of those comments were posted exactly 17 minutes ago too. And they both have the exact same amount of likes. From this there are 2 conclusions I'll draw: These accounts are real people who are subscribed and clicked on it as fast as possible to write their comments. This option is both very funny and very sad. The other option is that some loser set up a bot for these accounts. Which is also sad and funny. Also as Biden aggressively tours the swing states, even trying to pull Georgia and Texas in as contested states, while Trump stays in Florida begging for money, mirroring what Hillary Clinton did that lost her the 2016 election. Trump has also been slurring his words and making a lot of mistakes at pretty much every speech he gives lately, as opposed to Biden seeming to have good days and bad days, yet being very capable of giving a speech. I'm wondering what's going to happen when we get to the debate, and Trump either refuses to show up, giving Biden the opportunity to just give an uncontested Q&A, or shows up and either starts slurring his words or has a heart attack from cocaine use.
@wolfumz
@wolfumz 29 днів тому
It has been a huge boon to Trump that he's not in the public eye. I think once people start listening to the things he says, and they're reintroduced to the drama and chaos, they see how bizarre his thinking has become, I think it will work against Trump. Much of the polling in Trump's favor, I think it's because people are grading Biden to a higher standard, and not because they're seriously weighing Trump against Biden. It's just hard for me to see a large group of voters staying mad over Biden admin flubbing Isreal/Palestine, when the other candidate will flat ban Muslims from entering the country. RNC research has shown Trump's base doesn't think logically about him. For examp, you can give a statement like, "the 2017 tax cuts congress passed transferred wealth from the middle class to the top 1%, and paid for it with defecit spending," and Trump voters will generally agree with it nd give answers indicating they think defecit spending is bad and the like. But if you add in the word "Trump", and call them "the Trump tax cuts," and you otherwise repeat the sentence verbatim, researchers found Truml supporters will flip their opinion. And you can do this on any issue. After a few rounds of this kind of research, the RNC found, no political messaging would work against Trump. It was so bad that the same respondants would flip their own responses to favor Trump, and say they had the opposite opinion. No modern candidate has ever worked like this. The research found his supporters will gladly contradict themselves, abandon purported values, or mould their opinion to favor Trump. So the RNC gave up. That's why none of the Republican primary candidates really ever said anything about Trump. Research showed, it would always backfire. You can't reason with people who think like this.

Right now there's a huge amount of bad reporting which is centered around polls. Polling which represents name recognition rather than voter intent. Hammering the averages with constant polling by right-leaning polls in order to game the narrative. The ever-present treatment of treating polls that are 6 months out in the middle of the primary season as if they're definitive. Add to that the persistent under performance of Democrats in polls in general recently being left out of the horse race journalism and the punditry is a mess.

If you check the stats crime in America has gone down further than the 72 % of last year. The U.S. Bureau of Justice showed that 16.3 % drop over the 2023 rate where it already had a significant drop over the year before. Gallup showed similar statistics as does Pew research center. The economy which is the number one post covid economy in the developed world and beyond has been robust and excellent though the numbers haven't showed on store shelves and gas pumps, but they are getting there in places. Perception post Trump years have been pessimistic. Trump bungled the response to Covid resulting in 50 percent unemployment, and over a million persons dead, mostly old Republicans in Red States BTW because of Vaccination and Covid denialism and believing in John Birch and Q-Anon conspiracies. Trump promoted and advocated Violence so the crime rates sky-rocketed during his presidency. Actually across the globe. Right wingers felt they had a green light to punish minorities, women, children, Jews and all the usual victims. Mostly what Law enforcement and Experts call soft targets. Perception is everything. Joe Biden saved America and it is flourishing. Trump almost destroyed it and the repercussions and his remaining in the limelight has so upset and disturbed America that they think his anarchy and chao and violence which he is running on, BTW, for a second term, is still alive and destroying. It ain't. No Riots, crime is way down. In fact crime is the lowest it's been in 50 years. Check the stats. PEW Research, Gallup U.S. Bureau of Justice and other agencies is a good start.

Wow - discussions about oatmeal baths and another panel member so unnecessarily gobbling a purple food that I guess she did not have 5 min to wolf down before the cameras started- OR this maybe a deliberate generational thing where a person has to establish clear disrespect for their audience- it worked 😂😂😂 that was gross, distracting and unnecessary. Never saw this and thought it was political satire comedy.

The banter at the beginning is the worst part of this format. Why can't podcasters learn to go immediately into content? Don't ask people about their day or what kind of coffee they are drinking today or the traffic. We don't f'ing care.

I’m hearing shifts from Biden to Trump. Economic reasons
@Gamerad360
@Gamerad360 Місяць тому
The economy, immigration, and abortion are going to be the major issues. The economy is awful regardless of GDP and unemployment. Purchasing Power is what actually matters for everyday Americans. Illegal immigration is going insane even Biden agrees, but he isn't doing much, and hindering states actually doing something. People are always divided on abortion, but I highly doubt that the majority will vote on abortion issues over the economy and immigration. Not to mention the age issue, and Biden won't take a Cognitive Test says a lot. I'm calling it now the democrats should have replaced Joe Biden with a better younger candidate. I'm a moderate 100% not voting Biden the question is to whether I don't vote or vote RFK or Trump. Probably voting RFK or Trump because I seriously can't take another year of Biden.

REPUBLICANS refused to vote for bi-partisan immigration bill---best bill in 35 years--but, TRUMP said "Dont vote to fix immigration--I need that issue to campaign on!" The bill hired 1,500 MORE Brder Patrol, 100 MORE immigration judges to get the process moving faster, MORE technology on the border///so, your MAGA GOP FAILED to address immigration

@@prasannasurange How is that worth laughing? President Biden's approval ratings are worse than any other President, since the creation of Presidential approval rating polls, with the exception of Jimmy Carter. That is not a sunny portrait - I understand you might think Biden has the edge, and frankly, I agree, but he would be the first one to tell you, the race is not going to be won, by expecting it to happen.
