About Us:
Hi! We're Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We built a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible. Bussy was never meant to be parked in a driveway, waiting for weekend trips or holiday getaways. After we finished the build, we packed everything we kept into the bus and drove away from our old house and into the world of off-grid living, aka boondocking, and endless travel adventures!
Since we planned to be boondocking the majority of the time, we made choices such as; a 100-gallon water tank, an Air Head composting toilet, a 1500w solar power system with 1000Ah in AGM batteries, etc. We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, from our Skoolie Build Series, to infinite buslife adventures beyond!
Mike & Kerry

Garbage tip: Before leaving a grocery store, eliminate all excess packaging. Divide up that foam tray of chicken, get it into zip-locks, freeze some for later, but get that tray of chicken juice out of the van/truck/bus. Next, collect garbage in small bags, not big 30 gallon bags. This makes it easy to distribute the bags in the courtesy cans at the stores you patronize without overloading them.

Great advice! We were considering a larger trash can and now I think we will forego that. The grocery tip is a good one!

I've been living in my bus for a year as of February 18th. The constant management of water, power and propane are huge. I've seen a lot of people totally unprepared for the weather and how it effects everything. We can't always follow the weather and low temperatures are a huge factor in heating fuel use, water system insulation, battery life can be greatly affected by as little as 10 degrees variation. So many times, people find out they don't have enough blankets or storage for blankets. Even when you think you have out run the weather if you aren't prepared, you're asking for heart ache. I spent the first half of the winter in Florida and it was great until the first cold front that reached way south in November. Oh, also, Florida depends heavily on tourism, that means that the majority of the state is set up to make it near impossible to even find a place to pull off for the night. In the fall and winter, if you don't have a reservation at a campground, don't go. The greatest thing about living mobile, is the fact that the community of us who are out here are more than happy to share our information and experience. Case in point, this video, which is a great resource. Thanks guys, great content as usual.

I’m turning 65yrs old this October and I’ve lived alone, with 2 small dogs in a 1980 Avion 34V Travel Trailer near 4yrs now. I’m going to sell it this summer and purchase a bus to do a conversion , with all the help I can get, and make it my forever home. I’m still able to drive and I’m really looking forward to living in a 40ft. BlueBird Flat nose Diesel pusher. This video was very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing all the ups and downs of bus life.

Talking about anxiety, I went from driving a Toyota Prius to my Freightliner step van (a bus would be much harder). It's 8' wide and handles like, well, a commercial truck, which it is. Interstate speed limit of 80 mph, and I'm white-knuckled going 60 because the pavement is bad and it's shifting me all around the lane.

I was laughing the whole time, because i know exactly what you are going through. Ive been living in my bus for almost a year and a half, one thing you didn't go over and probably because you haven't experienced it and hopefully don't is having a health issue while living this lifestyle. For the last 6 months I've been dealing with cancer and chemo living alone in my bus. This lifestyle will either eat you up or make you superman! 2 weeks ago was my last chemo and last PET scan showed cancer was gone! Now looking forward to getting my stamina back up and traveling again. Safe and healthy travels to you guys!! Cherrs!

I watched you guys build your bus from start to finish as it is . The parts I enjoyed the most was watching you both go through the struggles to do all the work and then find something that needs to be rebuilt/ replaced . I do not say that in a mean way , just saw the reality of what it takes for you and Mike to get to enjoy the fruits of your labor . The frustration you both faced but won out on made it a worthwhile . I stand an applaud you both for a job well done .

What about dealing with other people? What about drama within the Skoolie community?Everyone can’t get along all the time surely. Dealing with the police? Getting purchases from the internet delivered. Dealing with steep narrow mountain roads? Could listen to you guys talk about this stuff for hours.

I feel like the inconveniences r always going to be there wherever u live, people just need to keep in mind u can't compare it to living in a house when it's not the same. It also depends on the lifestyle u live, what u want to change or r changing, n why u r doing this is the 1st place.

The fact with just a turn of a key and you can solve all kinds of problems sold me. To hot, start the bus and move. To cold, turn the key and move. Guy next to you getting on your nerves, turn the key and move. Freedom, Priceless! Love you guys. Edit to add a final thought... When I decided to go this route I thought long and hard about the people that came before me. This is why I decided a bus was much better than a covered wagon. Thanks for all the info.

I am so laughing my butt off...my wife and I lived the RV-Life for 14 years. We’ve been in a mobile home now and at 70 yrs old, I am converting my 4X4 Suburban into a camper for extended road-tripping and dispersed backcountry camping...there is definitely a learning curve. For those who survive the first few years, it does become a good life but... “got adventure?” - “Ol’ Scooter” in East Texas...

Bus life has been on my mind for years. Some nights I lose sleep thinking of all the fun stuff (including the build itself) and then I see clips like this that bring me back to the realities and chores of it. I am still on the fence. You two tell a lot of truth in the midst of all the hype and spin about the promised land of bus life. I can not figure out why you don't have 120,000 subscribers yet. This brings up a question for you, how is your diesel heater holding up with the vibration and days long of usage? Also, how is your mini split doing with all of the vibration and how much do you use it? How much power does your a/c use if your in a hot climate? I'd love to see an episode on these two items and your experiences using them.

I know a couple that has a separate 5 gallon tank for their shower which is a closed system. They have 3 filters and a UV light within this system along with a on demand water heater. As they take a shower the used water goes through the filters and UV light and comes back out the shower head. This allows them to take hot showers as long as they want. I imagine a lot of folks might think this is discussing, but is it? As long as the filters are changed in a timely manner and you don’t pee in the shower, it could be a game changer, especially if you change out the water after every shower or two. Discussing or brilliant?

I have gotten to having a schedule with utilities. I can relax more. I check and keep in check at certain times on designated days. Organize time and stick to it. Opens up down time. I hand my laundry over and have it done when I am stressing. Training your mind to stop reacting and getting ahead of problems to avoid is key. I adjusted, adapted. Some cannot do that. So it sounds like you might not be able to. Can I buy the bus? Hmmm???!!!🤗😘 Give it time...😌 Think of the pioneers and how much better we have it.

Questions: how much water do you carry and how long does it usually last? Where/how do you find a place to park? Apps? Where can I learn to know my bus/tire pressure/check fluids? I don't do any social media and have thought about it for the last few years, and I don't have any qualms about the inconveniences, my problem probably is that I got too many backups and we will be living in a moving truck sort of setup; downsizing is so hard to do when the items are mostly the build items, daily living items, and things we can't know if we will need or want later...until later on down the road. At this point, I still want my garden, seriously going to take a few containers along. Until, I suppose, I get tired of hauling them outside and back in, and finally just have a few plants and a sprouting dish. Right now, my biggest possible delusion is that I can have a few tomatoes, beans, lettuce, sorrel, radishes and peppers in a few containers, and adjust to the road with them. Probably won't work, they will slide around. But I am going to try. Don't want to not try, it may be feasible, and I won't know until I try. You asked, and now I am giving questions, wheedling advice and guidance and still long for the experience of a long camping trip. You did make me think about the generator, tho. Good journeys 💙👍🏼

I've watched some builds lately with recycling showers. The water goes through a filter, a UV sterilizer and gets reheated and reused. I don't know the practicality of that, like how often you can recycle, how often must you replace the filters and so on.... But it sounds interesting in a NASA ISS sort of way. :-)

We throw our garbage into public receptacles to include the compost waste from the toilet. We generally find a Walmart or a campground trash receptacle for this. I've even been using a kill a watt meter on all items I have plugged in minus the a/c and I'm staying way in my range of power nightly, of the bank I'll be running (baught 10 kill a watt meters in bulk a year ago) yes even have one on my fridge, and thats a full size one.. I've not been using my dishwasher except my own 2 hands, and only using items I'll have in my bus so when I switch homes it all wont be so alien to me.. I've now been living this way for 3 years, and have saved quite a bit of money on utility bills by switching..

You know all this stuff once you decide to do it. I don't worry about any of that stuff because I am always hooked up to power water and sewer. I don't want to live off the grid. That's me I book campgrounds and if I have to cancel that's okay I don't care. Just imagine if you were a family of 5 living on the bus. Mike, I don't care what the weather is fish rain or shine hike rain snow or shine ski snow or shine, and sometimes there are days of just sitting in front of the boob tube or the computer boob tube that's all good too. The desert is not me it's just a giant bust bowl if you run max fans and even AC you just suck in the dust that's been my experience. There is absolutely no way I am living in a van I must have a walk-around bed a dedicated bathroom with a 30X40 shower with a tub for my sweety. I could write a book and almost started too. Striper Fishing On Cape-Cod the best. Or some days just go out to the pickup fire up my RCI 2950 flip the switch on the sweet sixteen and just start jawing where ever the skip takes me.

I think it would just be nice to have our own property to have as a home base. A place where you could return to and not worry about any of the things we discussed and stay as long as you wanted to.

I've been trucking for 28+ years now. Half of that was over the road living in my truck. That was before cell phones though lol. Now I'll be living bus life. I'm hoping to have a bit of a leg up with this stuff. But there are always things to learn, just different. I love how you are telling truths in this video because I've seen a lot of OMG's from folks that didn't know the basic stuff. Thanks guys. Always appreciate you both and enjoy watching your adventures.

How would you say the color of your bus has impacted your bus life experience i.e. boon docking or staying over night in a parking lot. I’m planning on painting my bus fluorescent pink because i love it but I’m scared that I’m putting a target on myself which might draw the wrong kind of attention. Y’all’s bus is Mountain Dew Green so you might be able to shed a light for me.

We noticed at the most at Padre Island where the officials easily noticed that we had been there our two weeks and we're quick to remind us that our time was soon to end. Our friends in an RV were there for over 6 months and were never bothered until they were parked next to us!

How do you get along with each other. Suddenly u r 24/7 with each other
@BussyMcBusface
@BussyMcBusface 2 роки тому
That's a great question. We tend to get along with each other pretty well. We both have separate hobbies and interests that we pursue though we may be in the same room. It hasn't seemed to affect us in a negative way at all though we see some other bus couple suffering. Those people who are suffering were probably suffering prior to getting into bus life and the problems they had were only magnified by the additional stresses that bus life presents.

When a city says u can't sleep in our vehicle is that the same when it is ur home? Also when a place says 14days for free does that mean u move spots or u have to leave the park entirely?
@BussyMcBusface
@BussyMcBusface 2 роки тому
Yes they're very clear about sleeping in your vehicles is illegal whether it's your home or not. When some place says 14 days such as BLM land or national park land you have to leave the park and generally have to travel some distance that is specified by them or be gone for 14 days before you can enter BLM land again.
