As the earliest rapid charging technology to catch on in any volume, CHAdeMO helped early electric cars like the Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi I-Miev tackle long-distance trips.
But now, as every major automaker has dropped the standard outside of Europe, and Electrify America has committed to not install CHAdeMO stations at new locations it's got us thinking:

Thank you to the CHAdeMO Association, which contacted us following this video, for providing the following correction: “CHAdeMO is the only 'standardised' V2X protocol with certification tests defined and various products in the market. [CHAdeMO] products with 'proprietary' [technologies] came 2011-2012 but to the best of our knowledge, that's where CCS is today. The CCS communication protocol will be published only in Q1/2022, after which time they will define the hardware and software requirements, then the testing procedure. Please do not confuse some companies coming out with V2X-capable cars (with non-standardised protocol) with having a standardised (and certifiable) solution.[...] Defining those requirements and ensuring [interoperability] can take as long as 4-5 years but we, as always, welcome other technologies to join the party. [...] our purpose is to advance electromobility and to achieve environmental goals - that is, reducing GHG emissions and achieving carbon neutrality - and not winning (or losing if you prefer) the plug war. Our heart is with those with the same goals, and we wish to provide a reliable, safe, simple solution that works in any part of the world”

@@fabiogalletti8616 not true. Tesla went to CCS in EU, because their SuperCharger port in EU was Type2-DC (as opposed to their own US design, in Europe Type2 was chosen, because it also supports europe's very common 3-phase AC-charging, which isn't possible with Tesla's US SC connector - and Type2 standard also supportet DC from the beginning, which was only used by Tesla), which they couldn't pimp to support SC3 speeds (let alone beyond), because the contacts/leads can't be scaled. Second, Toyota is selling their brand new Lexus UX300e equipped with Chademo in many markets in EU. EU doesn't enforce any standards. Any may be used, as long as they meet ISO safety standards, which Chademo does. France even had a law which enforced at least one Chademo plug per charging park, so even IONITY had to provide one Chademo port at each of them in France. This law was dropped this year, because it doesn't make sense anymore. Everything beyond that is left for the market to regulate. Which it seemingly does.
@randycarter2001

This brings up my biggest complaint with SAE. The J1772 standard did not restrict charge port location. So today it's all over the car, front, fender, quarter panel, etc. Thus charging stations require longer cables. You can't design a standard parking stall forcing people to park in various ways, nose in, back in, opposite of traffic flow. Due to the longer cable people don't put the cables away. They are usually left all over the ground. Creating a trip hazard and a liability problem for property owners. Plus making a tempting target for thieves. And the worst is the port on the front fender exposes the connection to damage from passers by. People passing between the parked cars can collide with the cable and break either the cable or the socket. Poorly thought out.

Chademo association is mostly to blame. They made it really expensive to be accredited as chademo, and because it was a club, didn't require compliance with the standard. So the voltage standard wasn't maintained. Which meant that some chademo vehicles couldn't charge at some chargers, despite them both being accredited. It was almost like the standard came from petrol car makers who wanted to delay electrification as long as possible.

The voltage standard for CHAdeMO was from 50V to 500V, and later from 50V to 1kV, while CCS startes at 200V. 50V would have been nice for LSV and motorcycles &c. But ALL the CHAdeMO charging station that was installed in Norway did not go down to the lowest voltage, only to the lowest CCS voltage. So those bikes some years back with CHAdeMO was dead on arrival due to the chargers could not charge them. G-Wiz / REVAi came out with a updated model, with CHAdeMO. But same problem there. The battery voltage was higher than the CHAdeMO minimum, but lower than the minimum of most CHAdeMO chargers. CHAdeMO shot themselves in the foot.

I bought a used 2019 40Kwh Nissan Leaf SV and have used the CHAdeMO connector just once, and that was just to see if it actually worked. The Leaf is our second car for use around our suburban area and for that, J1772 is just fine. We don't use it for long road trips, so we also don't worry about the passive battery cooling. I use the supplied Nissan granny cable at home plugged into a 240V outlet in my garage, and numerous free ChargePoint J1772 connectors around my area to top it off now and then. I agree CCS is the way to go in the future, especially if my primary car was a BEV and used for long trips. That being said, if one has the want and ability to spend $25k on a car there are many great CCS optioned cars. I bought my car for $11k and have put 14k miles on it since Jan 2020, so it works perfectly for me. I do a 250 mile round trip a few times a year with no issues. Thank you for this video. I have had a long term fascination with electric cars, and lifetime in electronics. I was aware that there were a number of standards for charging at different power levels but not owning an electric car I was unaware of many of the details. It seems that the obsession with range, 0-60 times has obscured many of the fundamentals to actually using the cars. For much of my recent motoring a short range EV would be fine.

Actually to the South of France you have a huge network of Chademo-only free chargers deployed by Nissan at Ikea, Auchan and municipal locations, and also some regional free charging networks which offer free Chademo charging at 50kW. Lidl was also offering free charging until recently at a huge number of locations in France, you can still charge with them for a low fee. In France, Chademo is your best option for economical driving. If you want to get there faster, Ionity and Superchargers will be happy to charge you for the pleasure, but then again Ryanair would save you an entire day and a lot of depreciation if money is not an issue...

I live in NZ. About two thirds of BEV registered in NZ are used imports from Japan - most are Nissan Leafs. I have a used import from the UK, another source of BEVs. The majority of our BEV fleet then uses Chademo. The used vehicle market from Japan will not stop, as successive governments have been happy to for people to buy these cheaper cars. So it is likely here that Chademo will continue to play a part in the NZ charging scene for quite a long time as newer models trickle down to the s/h market there and find their way to NZ.

I have a fully functioning one... well fully functioning is not the correct term, because it's 10 years old and got no updates lately ;-) But it's still working, the battery is still good, it's a bit slow, the screen resolution is not as good, but every bit of hardware is still working and it looks like new... But it's scrap because it does not get any updates and some apps can't connect to their server any more and these apps can't be updated any more and it has never been supported by third party open source systems... It was too much of a niche product (XCover2 or even the beam phone, the projector phone). I learned from that. Never buy a short lived niche product. And if you need such a thing, buy a mainstream product and you will get updates for years even from the manufacturer (Galaxy non-A for example).

Not sure about that. Chademo was much more reliable. When CCS first came out, many CCS chargers wouldn't work with some EV models because the protocols were too ill-defined, while you could plug any Chademo car into any Chademo charger and it would just work (unless actually faulty, of course.) Also CCS was not designed for V2x and though it's being extended to do so, it doesn't seem to be an easy task.

As someone who owned a 2019 Nissan LEAF SL Plus for 11 months. Their air cooled battery ended up being more of a problem than the CHAdeMO charge port ended up being. Requiring 20 hours to drive 600 miles thanks to heat throttling the charge rate is unacceptable. We immediately traded it in for a 2020 Chevy Bolt Premier afterwards. Ironically, the following Monday, Nissan announced their own abandonment of CHAdeMO chargers with the Aryia SUV, and finally going to active cooling, instantly devaluing their LEAF by a large margin. We dodged a major bullet getting rid of it when we did.

The end of CHAdeMO in Europe and the US is and old story, or at least you could foresee it a long way ago. The majority of the car companies back then decided to go CCS (with its 2variants), and it was better than every company having its own plug. Now we are moving to 3 charging standards worldwide, which is much better than the headaches the company have with petrol filler necks worldwide. Have seen something about 50 different petrol and diesel nozzles and the OEMs have check them all if they want to sell the cars worldwide.

When EU regulations imposed CCS back in 2014 as the de facto standard, France implemented the rule with a 10 year grace period making it mandatory to have at least 1 CHAdeMO head per charging station open to the public. Businesses are exempt from this as well as Tesla SuC because they are not open to the public.
