Thank you for your comment! I started making films with editing (not just posting an uncut video, or a video with a cut or two) about 8 months ago. I now know I absolutely love making videos. This video has many firsts for me: first film with multiple camera shots for the same scene, first film with so many different angles, first time all the shots are actually in 4K and with what I think are the proper frame rates, first film with 120 fps for slow motion, first film where I was able to get the color and tones to be consistent through all the shots (at least mostly!), and first film using ND filters on the Nikon, not just the GoPro. Much appreciated. Thank you again! If you have any advice, I'm happy to hear it!

I bought this bike earlier this year. Love it to death, and it's better off road than I am. Tons of power on road for travel, and perfectly competent off road. I didn't buy into the marketing hype as I don't have the skills or desire to ride it like Chris Birch. I essentially use it as a touring bike that I can also use to rip around on FSRs in BC. For me, it's perfect. Except my entire electrical system and display crashed randomly two months ago, and they're still trying to figure it out... But that's another story.

"Better off road than I am": exactly! Same here! The marvelous thing about this type of bike is that it is appropriate for 99% of roads out there so you don't have to stop and think "I wish I was on a bike that could go up this road" as you would with a typical touring bike, cruiser or sport bike. I can imagine the amazing routes you have available to you in BC!

Nice video, not everyone is a Chris Birch or Pol Tarres wannabe, nor or they ever going to be. It’s great to see you ride the SAR in the way a large number of riders will, with no pretension it’s a MX or enduro bike. Keep the content coming please!
@richardrisserjr
@richardrisserjr 4 місяці тому
Thank you! While I do think the SAR is a great bike, as for its size it handles quite well, the marketing teams do a great job of making it seem to be a much more maneuverable and nimble bike than it ever really could be compared to lighter ones. Of course, all motorcyclists would love to have the skills of Chris Birch and Pol Tarres, and we congratulate them for their lifetime of dedication to the art and taking it to new levels, but it takes decades of practice and a certain degree of talent to make it that far. I really love having the unknown before me, exploring new roads, new paths, not knowing what is over the next rise or around the next bend. There will be many more videos coming as in February 2024 we will begin actually riding and recording GPS tracks with waypoints for the all-new "Trans Mexico Loop Route". This may not be its actual name, but it describes exactly what it is. It is a loop route that starts either on the Texas-Mexico border or the California-Mexico border, winding its way down through the mountains along the western coast of Mexico to Guatemala and then winds its way back to the US through the mountains on the eastern side of Mexico. It will connect many of Mexico's most impressive volcanoes, canyons, archeological sites with pyramids and temples, national parks and colonial cities covering about 8-10,000 miles. This has been my dream project since 2019 and it's finally coming to light.

I bet you are excited! I took two rides on mine today and every time I walk past it in the garage I smile. I'm hoping my new rear tire gets here soon. There isn't much left of the one on it! Congratulations on your new bike! Make sure you put lock tight on the bolts holding on the kickstand. They will come loose if you are going off the pavement. I put blue lock tight on them and they kept coming loose, finally put red lock tight on them. Additionally, the top chain slide nut came loose and the nut and piece fell off and got lost so I had to put a makeshift piece of kevlar in its place (KTM told me the new piece would take a month to arrive) so check that and other bolts from time to time.

Boy...what a tough audience out there. A) You and your team put together a really nice, inspiring film. B) Contrary to Chris Birch's exploits, that 1290 is not interchangeable with a 500 cc Saturday enduro bike ride. Its built to take you and your GPS (and some camping gear) to Patagonia and back... come what may. Congratulations!!

Thank you. There are some tough opinions among viewers at times. Try to keep things in perspective and remember that haters or the highly critical are only a small percentage of viewers. And yes, Chris Birch's talent makes it seem that you can ride the 1290 like an enduro bike, and well for 0.01% of motorcycle riders, this might be true! But not for the rest of us mortals! :-) We appreciate your encouraging comments. Motorcycling and filming are really a blast! May we all be safe and have fun!

Would be more exciting. I've been all over the backcountry around our location in central Mexico and have only found either dirt roads or cow paths. The cow paths are mostly quite narrow with very large rocks, more appropriate for the KTM 500 (another video!). When I find trails I'll get them in a video! Meanwhile we are working on an adventure route that crosses Mexico from the US-Mexico border to the Guatamala-Mexico border in the south that will pass through or by many of Mexico's volcanoes, archeological sites, colonial cities, Monarch butterfly reserves, and amazing canyons and mountains. It is an 8,000 mile route that will be at least 80% dirt and go through parts of Mexico that most people never see.

It can be a real handful to turn around when the track is tight, no doubt, at those moments I ask what I'm doing! But, it handles very rough terrain quite well. You are right! I am a newbie and proud of it. I just started riding motorcycles in my 40s after pedaling thousands of miles around Latin America on my bicycle. However, I spent the first few years on my 2002 DR650 riding the TransAmerica Trail and around Chiapas in southern Mexico so I've been to many places and am proud of it. I am not a stunt rider, nor do I push the limits beyond my abilities. I am a backcountry explorer and traveler. I also love myself and have family that love me, so safety is first. And, I must say, some people proudly show their battle scars from their accidents and mistakes. I am not one of these. I've ridden over 30,000 miles on mostly dirt roads and trails over the past 5 years and have not had a single accident, nor have I injured myself even once in regards to the motorcycle. This I am proud of too. There are all kinds of riders out there. They are all part of the motorcycle-riding family. Ride safe; let's respect our fellow riders.

@richardrisserjr
@richardrisserjr 4 місяці тому
I have a DR650 which I rode across the US in the backcountry from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and then over to Oklahama, down through Texas then across Mexico to Guatemala. It's fun, I enjoy it! It's relatively light, simply mechanically, reliable and durable. However, since I've gotten this bike I don't ride the DR much any more. While the KTM Super Adventure is 260 kilos with travel gear which is considerably heavier than the DR650 at about 190 kilos with gear the KTM's suspension and ergonomics make it handle exceeding well. On faster roads, there is no comparison between the two: the KTM is far superior. On trails the DR650 is better. However for dirt roads, I prefer the KTM. Its power deliver is excellent and its overall handling and build inspire confidence. I would say that if you are mostly a trail rider, use a smaller bike. If you want to do extreme adventure have a smaller bike. But, if you want crazy acceleration on the pavement, like throwing rocks down dirt roads, and hit easy to moderate trails, the KTM will be more fun. I use a KTM 500 when I want to hit cow trails and really rough places. The KTM 500 is far superior to the the DR650 for hard adventure riding as it's much lighter with better suspension and has better power delivery. Having said all of this, the DR650 fit me perfectly for that point in my life. We all have a budget and the point of having a motorcycle is to be out on it. So, it is better to get a smaller bike and be out more often than have to be working more because you got a more expensive motorcycle as all associated costs increase with size: more gas, more oil, generally more expensive parts....

1290 doesnt weigh 500 lbs, more like 560lbs in real life, put a few things on it and you have a 600 lb bike. And yes, top pros can ride any thing any way they want to. I tried an 1190 briefly a while ago, what a frikken behemoth, made my 890R feel pretty nice.
@richardrisserjr
@richardrisserjr 4 місяці тому
The good thing about riding a heavy bike for a while is that it makes the previous bikes seem so light. After spending a few weeks on the 1290 the 500 feels like a bicycle with an engine. One of the benefits to riding such a large bike is that it really ups your skill set and makes lighter bikes feel so much easier than they originally felt.

Many assumptions..... I rode the TransAmerica Trail from North Carolina to Oklahoma, then created my own route from Texas down through the entire country of Mexico down to the border of Guatemala, then I spent two years riding around Mexico's most southern state of Chiapas in my free time (as I stayed to live there). Then I rode back up through Mexico to the Mexican state of Jalisco (where Guadalajara is). On this trip I didn't have videography equipment. So, does 11,000 miles of adventure riding give me any more credibility? We are currently in the multi-year process of creating Mexico's own "TransMexico" or "Backcountry Discovery" route that will be 14,000 kilometers through the backcountry on 80-90% dirt connecting many of Mexico's volcanos, pyramids and archeological sites, canyons, Monarch butterfly wintering ground reserves, colonial cities and more. When this project is online it will be under the website: ridemex.com and under the business umbrella of Outback Exploration. However, it will take a few more years of work before it is ready for ADV riders. Also, regarding this video, as you may have noticed, this is not a narrated review, just a video made for the pleasure of filmmaking and to see a bit of how the bike moves. And, whether I am traveling or not, I use it as an adventure bike to explore the backcountry on day rides. You don't have to have soft bags or hard boxes on the bike to be an ADV rider. When there are bags on the bike I use Mosko Moto bags and pack light so there isn't a huge difference in handling. On day trips I just carry a small pack on my back with a tire plug kit, CO2 cartridges, and water and snacks.
