Is There a Ride On Etiquette on Zwift?

In this video, I talk more about the social element of Zwift. Many of you might be newer to the platform and might be questioning what the proper etiquette or expectations are surrounding ride ons. Do you reciprocate? Or maybe you do give ride ons and are finding yourself frustrated with the lack of engagement or reciprocation. I try to give a little context surrounding some of the psychology of riders out on the platform to give you a little more context regarding the “rules of engagement” when it comes to the social elements of Zwift. This, of course, is just my opinion and my personal observation, but I have built this perception having spent appreciable time on the platform and hope that the insights are helpful to those trying to navigate through the platform for their first season.

I’m a sad bear when I get a ride on from someone I don’t recognize and can’t find them within a few pedal strokes to return it. We do need a “right back at you” button.

I give out a lot of them when I'm recovering, or on a social ride, but I never realized people cared that much to expect reciprocation. I just hope that one of ones I give out makes it to someone who could use a little encouragement to keep on. Don't care about receiving one. Thanks for another interesting video, Sarah!

As a new Zwift rider, I try to give ride-ons to everyone I pass. I use the phone app and my computer and it only takes a quick second to hit the circle of influence on the phone app to lob off a handful of ride-ons.. The "share the love" mentality is needed when we are all suffering our way through a ride. I believe everyone appreciates it. Or at least they should. Thank you for your willingness to help educate and entertain other Zwift users. And to those who like to hate on you....they must be miserable in their own life. Keep doing you.

I was a beta tester for Zwift when it came out. When we rode back in 2015 we might have seen around 20-25 riders and giving ride on was like a wave to a fellow friend/ Zwifter. Now with all the people on the platform sometime past 15,000 or more it seems like the real world nowadays unfriendly or indifferent, to say the least. When I ride I try to Ride On every cyclist that rides with me and past me.

When you tap the Circle on the Zwift Companion app, half the time you're giving ride-ons to people heading in the opposite direction. I'm focusing on Zwift and even more so on Strava with following and congratulating people I actually know. The whole 'following' thing is getting a bit over the top. In my Strava club (Gearheads) I actually remove people who don't live in my city. No point in somebody from Brazil racking up huge miles while the rest of the club is freezing their butts off in the cold and rain of the Pacific North West. I want the leaderboard to truly reflect those that are living in the same conditions and putting out the effort. Besides I can't invite a member from South Africa to do a group ride in the summer.

Thanks for the insight! As a new (and enthusiastic!) Zwift rider I was confused why people were giving me Ride Ons when I didn't know them. I now just give random Ride Ons as I am cycling along (a bit like that Movie Pay It Forward) - as you say, its hard to focus on riding when you are also trying to "hunt down" whoever just gave you a Ride On. Personally, Ride Ons don't motivate me at all. I'm more motivated by targets and achievements within the programme. I'm not big into social media so maybe that's why this aspect of the social engagement just doesn't resonate with me.

I give ride ons, but I honestly don't care if I don't get one back. I usually do, but don't care if I don't. They could be in the hurt locker, distracted, new and not familiar on how, did an area ride on with the companion app and it missed me,...there could be a lot of reasons. Why worry about it?

I completely understand where you are coming from. I am normally watching a video on an easy ride or paying attention to my training plan if I am not in a group ride. I love everyone out there, but I really don't see most Ride On's until something is over. I do try to give them in group rides when I am working with a group through the companion app. You are totally correct, giving a Ride On back is way to complicated. I think they should make it easier to hit a key to reciprocate. Great video!

Looong time cyclist, new to Zwift hence looking at this video to learn the lay of the land. Appreciate your explanation which I think makes perfect sense. Thanks for being honest. I've spent hours in the garage on the Cyclops (recently graduated to Wahoo Kickr :-) doing Carmichael TrainRight videos and other workouts. Like you, I'm 100% focused on the workout (cadence, power, breathing, The Circle, etc.) I can't bear the distraction of TV or even music. While I appreciate the inherent sentiment behind the Ride On (and wonder what I've done to deserve it) the only time I give them out is when I'm sitting up during a cooldown. Like you, am hoping nobody's hating on me if I just ride. FWIW, IRL I'm a gregarious sort and always acknowledge other riders on the road (which is weird in France cuz they don't do that. My wife is French so I'm there regularly. Yes, It's REALLY nice riding there.)

Glad I found Zwift though.. got run over by a lorry a few years ago and had a very lucky escape ie: not dead... was going to sell my bike because I completely lost my confidence at every road junction and roundabout thinking vehicles wouldn't give way.... at least with zwift I can ride without the fear of being killed on the road. I absolutely loved my cycling and I think I will again... ride ons or not!

Couldnt agree more. Free rides aren't so bad with the companion app, if I receive a ride on it reminds me to tap my circle and give some to those around me. However when in a big group ride or race, that feature is removed. Unless it's a long endurance ride, it's far too much effort to give them back.

I appreciate your honesty and courage to admit in the video that you are not a "Ride Ons" person. I'm not either. And I try to repay the Ride Ons that I get, but when I'm training, I'm training, and I'm focused on training and not on Ride Ons. Usually, at the end of the events, I usually give Ride Ons to all the participants of that event, but during the event, forget it, all my strength goes to cycling.

I'm fairly new to Zwift. I can appreciate the Ride Ons but I don't really want to participate in giving them because I'm not in Zwift for the social connection. I'm in it to gain fitness and race. I've done all of my mountain bike and road racing in my 30's and 40's. Being 56 I simply want to stay as fit as possible. I had no idea I would really enjoy the platform so much. It's addictive but one must use restraint or overtrain. I hope nobody gets upset that I'm not going to be the typical Ride On cheeerleader. It's just not my thing. Thanks for all of your insightful videos.

The Backspace idea is a GREAT improvement suggestion to a quick reply as we do in real life. Another use of Ride Ons I have experience is the recognition if you close the gap between some groups in some rides like the Zwift Gran Fondos. That extra communication while riding as a group is cool. About an year ago also Zwift removed the count of Ride Ons given-received from their summary emails with your metrics... wait... I'm not receiving those at all anymore?

Many times when running on the treadmill when I received Ride Ons, I wanted to reciprocate but it's not easy to do it when I'm swinging my hands at pace. As such, I usually don't. However, when riding I tried my best to do it as at least one of my hand is still free. I like the camaraderie and why not give a Ride Ons, it's free after all. Tq for the video.

Having come across from the running side of Zwift I'm definitely a ride on giver. On the running side, especially before our runner numbers increased recently, there was a lot of ride ons flying around and people would return them no questions asked. The cycling on Zwift looked fun so I bought a bike and a set up and joined that, I still dish out ride ons whenever I can but like you said, they just don't make it easy for us (especially with the faster speeds cyclist move at). In a free ride you can easily hit the circle around your location triangle (in the ZCA) and give out 5 at a time, but that's only really yielding many ride ons when riding with pace partners. It's easy for people to get caught up in the numbers too, like their 'likes' on social media, and we all know that's not a healthy habit for the mind. Best thing is to appreciate the ones you get, give them whenever possible (encourage the community and all that) and just enjoy the platform; not the number of glowing thumbs in your back pockets ;)

I’m either head down smashing it or easy rides where I’ve got my app up and dishing out ride ons like they’re going out of fashion. I give them to give people as a boast and don’t expect them back. There's two different types riders on the road too, some will acknowledge you, while others will check the bike, check the gear, and that then ups the % chance of no acknowledgement. Online, it's the view of training or game. Me, I'll give the Ride On to support and encourage the rider, that's all. As for the social element of Zwift, I see riders and numbers and either want to keep up or grind through the miles.Social rides/events, just helps mix up the routes etc., it's nice to know there's a collective, real riders on the screen, but it's not a place to socialise. On that note, I've hit the like button and will no doubt offer up a Ride On too.

Zwift needs something like an "incognito" mode for those that don't want to be interrupted with ride-ons. Another option is to have something like a hot key that returns back a "ride-on" to the person that started, although that is sort of silly because most ride-ons are given by random people.
@jobicek
@jobicek 3 роки тому
You must live in a small community then, I guess. When I go out in the real world for a ride or run or whatever, almost all the waves and nods come from strangers. There are only a few familiar faces I recognize and I don't know those people either. I have just seen them over and over again. You're essentially saying 'Hi!' and the expectation is a reply. I guess the weird thing about Zwift is that you can give Ride Ons when you're nowhere near those people (in the virtual world). It's like an equivalent of seeing someone's status and sending them a message. And you might only read those messages when you get back (I bring a phone with me for emergencies, not to chat). Of course, then there is the "city effect" when there are just so many people going past you that you can't greet them all. That's why people use the bomb (besides the fact that giving individual ride ons is too difficult). Also, when you get many ride ons, not all of them will show up. Essentially, when there is a ride on displayed, incoming ride ons get muted. This pertains mainly to people with large followings. But also when you give a bomb and a bunch of people return it in a short timespan, it won't show all of them. As I understand it, the times add up. It just won't get displayed. I believe there is a sort of incognito mode when people do group rides. I believe the rest of the world can't see you, but I'm not sure. You see them so it's not deserted but only the group can see you.
@jameslefleur1970
@jameslefleur1970 3 роки тому
@@jobicek By strangers on Zwift, what I mean is that I don't even know who sent the "ride on" some times as in there is so much going on with the workout. For instance, was it the guy in front on me, behind, right side or maybe not even on the same road I'm riding. Essentially it would take a lot of effort to find the person and send back a ride-on (sometimes) On the other hand, when I'm on the real road I see a stranger and I know exactly where he/she is located and I actually make my best effort to wave back and maybe they will nod or not and that is OK. When I'm sitting around with the phone in my hand and someone I follow starts riding I send them a ride on with no expectation of them returning a message. I hope that if they are in a dark place the ride-on would help them push thru. I agree with you.

I'm in the second category, not because I'm a hardcore event cyclist, my bike use is mainly transport and recreation. Up until the pandemic it was my commute, primary source of activity, and I loved it. Then came the pandemic and all that stopped. I found it very hard to get out and do rides that had no utility purpose. My fitness plummeted and my girth expanded. An investment in a direct drive trainer was an act of desperation. I've been zwifting for a month now and I'm surprised to find that I'm enjoying it. My problem is that I have Autism Spectrum Disorder (Aspergers syndrome in old money). Us Aspies are unsociable, it's the nature of the condition. Responding to riding etiquette is socially awkward for us, I simply don't know how to deal with it. ASD is not uncommon, and I bet I'm not alone on zwift with the condition. I mention this for the benefit if 'normals'. Some of us don't respond because we simply don't know how to do so. You need to be aware of that.

OMG, entitlement is alive and well. I thought it was about getting a workout, competing with each other, and getting and/or staying fit. I have given out 25 to 100 Ride Ons in a ride. I've given out 0 Ride Ons if I had done a hard ride/race, but I give Ride Ons every time I look at the Zwift app to check my stats. I give Ride Ons when I'm able, and I enjoy getting them, but I don't feel entitled to receiving them.

When in training - there is two ride on types for me: I am warming up, in the crowded start zone, I spam the ride on bombs since I have nothing else to do. When suffering later in the training I am looking for everything distracting me from my pain, so besides counting down from 100, etc. also everybody gets a ride on. In races I can't be bothered though... 😁

I’ll open the companion app a couple of times a day and give one to everybody I follow, and give a five rider ride on in a rest interval of a workout but reciprocating specifically is too hard. I do make the effort if somebody I follow and see a lot is close enough to appear in the nearby riders screen

I struggle to get to the button. If I’m riding, especially in a group ride, there are too many buttons to press to give a targeted ride on. I tried it with the mouse/touchpad, and that was a disaster (landed up watching that rider instead of giving a “ride on”. The companion app needs the “Ride On” available right on the list without needing to select the rider.

I give Ride On to the group around me when I am warming up, cool down or easy spin. I just hold the putting and it gives a bunch to the people around me....I do not find my friends to give them a ride on, unless they are near me or I get them at the beginning. When I am working out - I am not reaching over to give a ride on.

If I am in a casual group ride or a solo ride, I'll hand out ROs without any concern about someone giving back. No need to reciprocate. However, during a race or one of Zwift's Tours (which are really races), I don't give out any. This because the current method of only being able to hand out one at a time in organized events has resulted in me accidentally falling out of the pack in which I was drafting.

I've been on Zwift for more than five years, and I still give out loads of Ride Ons. I feel bad if I can't reciprocate one, but of course Zwift make it tricksy as you say. I'm not a big fan of the Ride On minigames. Especially the "hunt the cursor" game where you have to try and find your mouse pointer amidst a load of moving graphics. Or "Whack-a-thumb" where you have to click it before the Zwifters Nearby list reshuffles and the thumb moves. Annoys me that I can't select people to give them a Ride On when I'm in a workout too.

If I'm doing a Coco ride I'll hit the white circle in the companion app until every one in the group has gotten a ride on. Then I'll watch for groups going the other way and hit the circle to give them ride ons - and that'll get some of the new people joining the Coco ride too. I think I'm getting about 100 ride ons back per hour nowadays in a Coco ride. In a group ride... if it's an easy base group ride and I'm not too tired or in some kind of distracted or de-motivated zombie state, I'll manually scroll through the companion app of nearby riders one at a time and ride on everybody, since you can't hit the circle in the group rides. Good way to get lots of followers who'll end up giving you lots of ride ons in the future through the companion when you're riding and that'll help you accumulate enough drops for the 858/Super 9's and coveted Safety Bike which I'm only about 1,000,000 drops away from now, yay. In a harder group ride or a race, sorry, forget it, ride ons are not gonna happen, until the end when it's all over and the circle appears in the post-event free ride cool down. In my club's regularly-scheduled big open group rides (Team Valhalla) I'll turn off my phone's WiFi at the start of the ride, so the companion app won't join the ride, and will give me the one-click option to give all 40-50 of my currently-riding friends a ride-on, before switching back to WiFi so I can ride on everybody else if I'm motivated enough to do it that day. I like to do the full slate of 100 ride ons during club rides to maybe help make new riders feel good and maybe join more club rides and join the club eventually. I don't really take any notice of who gives me a ride-on back in a reciprocative manner, and I don't search out people who give me ride ons to try to hit them back - unless we're free riding and I see them close by. Sometimes I'll notice the names when they pop up on top but it's not a big deal - I know a lot of the time it's just people hitting the generic ride on thumb button in the companion for all their friends who are currently riding. Honestly never noticed or cared if anybody gave me a ride on back or not. Sorry, had a few beers tonight and rambling. Have a good race tonight everybody racing Richmond ZRL!!! I'm in Americas W so still a night to chill and rest up...

@ZwiftingWithGranny

Let me put it this way from the other side of the ride on coin. If I want to give someone a ride on, it's because I want to give someone a ride on. It's not because I want one back. In general, if I do something for somebody IRL, I'm doing it because I want to, not because I expect anything in return. I'm not being dickish either but this whole concept of why am I not getting ride-ons back when I give them out puzzles me. I recognize so many of the names of people who give me ride-ons and I usually end up going to the main page of the companion app and hitting the blue area to give mass ride-ons to whatever world the person is in who gave me a ride on. Sometimes I'm at work and I'll just go into the companion app and hit the blue area. I just do that for the heck of it. There's no way anyone's going to find me because I'm not actually on Zwift at the time. A lot of times I'll be in the middle of a ride, and you can see it in the videos, that I will reach for my mouse and give somebody a ride on that gave me one in that particular ride. It's exactly as you said. You hope you can get the mouse to the orange thumb before it disappears and then if it disappears, you have to click on the person's name and then click on the thumb and then click on back to me. That is a lot of work! I even had someone comment on my videos that they are amazed at my mouse skills while I'm riding 🤣. I miss those Zwift emails where they told you how many ride-ons you gave out. I used to try to top myself. On my easy days I would mosey on down Tempus Fugit and just keep hitting the circle with the arrow in it constantly. Then they stopped telling you how many you gave that week and I think that may have had an effect on how many ride-ons people give out. Very interesting video because it really made me think about what an effort it is to give a freaking ride on in the middle of a ride! But on the other hand, if somebody is pissed off that they're not getting ride ons back, don't give them out with the expectation of getting them back. Just give them out.

Totally agree. I think most people transcend this idea once they have spent some appreciable time on the platform. At first they are all excited and playing with buttons and think of it like leaving a comment on someone's facebook, not really that hard to at least give it a reaction if you see it. Then with time they realize what a chore it can be and the randomness that they will get in terms of followers and ride ons that they can't possibly pin down and they move into the understanding of why there is a poor return. I have never been a huge fan of the panhandling element. I don't care when someone drops in a facebook group and says "hey I'm riding X today, trying to nab he Jensie badge, a ride on would be appreciated." If I see that I try to support, but one of the guys in the comments said they were literally begging and spamming the chat to get the badge all ride long and that is really annoying. They would have gotten in for sure in the course of the minimum of 5 hours they were going to spend on the bike, no reason to hector the community for likes. I always feel a little guilty when I look at a ride later and see the rides on I get that I am completely oblivious to. I think it's like 20 and it's some ridiculous amount. I do the same thing at work, I'll check out events coming up and drop the thumb to the people I follow and that is probably the lion's share of the ride ons I give. One of these days I am just going to spend a ride being absolutely obnoxious and giving ride ons to everyone... but not like the people that confuse the ride on voice with the actual ride on... when I used to have sounds on, I would want to physically gouge out my ears listening to that souther "Riiide Ooown" over and over and over again. 😂

There are orange thumb icons which appear next to people's names on the right hand side of my screen. I had "guessed" that by clicking on them (they disappear as soon as I click on them, and sometimes before - meaning someone else beat me to it?) that I was giving that rider a "Ride On". Now that I've watched umpteen videos about how to give Ride-ons, it seems clear that this is not the way. Why are those orange thumbs randomly popping up next to riders names, and what does clicking on one do for you - if anything? Thanks.

I think giving Ride Ons may be one of the worse things in Zwift. Getting carpet bombed by riders that are in the general vicinity does nothing for me... or the riders giving them. I give Ride Ons to those in front of me, behind me and beside me based on putting in an ass kicking effort. But as you mentioned, the biggest Zwift fail is giving a Ride On. Finding a rider's name to give a Ride On is a pain in the ass - within the program and definitely in the companion app. IMO, reciprocating a Ride On is almost impossible when the name flashes on screen and you have to search the list for the rider in an effort to hit their name... hit the Ride On thumb... start "watching" them... and then "return to me". Talk about a major distraction that ruins the moment. Zwift needs to figure out a way to quickly and easily respond - how hard would it be to add another damn button to their craptacular menu bar? Who waves? Who gives the elbow pass? Who says they're toast? Smiley face? Now can we talk about the brilliant person at Zwift that decided we need to go through the full process of launching the program and starting a ride to gain access to achievements, badges, garage, etc. Thank God we have ZwiftHub to semi-manage what Zwift should provide. Finally, in our household, I have renamed Zwift to SLAHOCing. Spinning Like A Hamster On Crack. Ride On EIP!

You need to select a rider and give a specific ride on. The key is only for animations and can be brought up any time by clicking the screen. Your rider will say "ride on" audibly but won't give one. Click a rider and hit the orange thumb to give a ride on or follow them and do it in the companion app.

Typically, I’ll reciprocate a Ride On when someone is near me and I can easily click the Orange Button to return it. If I’m in the middle of climb and can’t easily click that button, then I don’t. I’ll also give Ride Ons to others riding near me, if we’ve been “grouped” for a while (over a mile or so) or if they complete some milestone like completing a big climb or setting a PR.

I always wave to other cyclist on the road but on Zwift not so much ... usually only when doing a group ride and the ride leaders calls for ride-ons (it's the least I can do). During a structured workout or race ... Never. Completely separate question, during the Uber Pretzel ride is stated there were 3,915 riders but I could only see a group of several hundred ( I think); Does Zwift limit the size of the group anyone one rider can see?
@EverythingIsPhotogenic
@EverythingIsPhotogenic 3 роки тому
Yep, it's actually one hundred avatars. It is to limit the load on your GPU. Having to draw the churn of that many avatars would put an inordinate strain on your system and causes even some of the best equipment to crash. Sometimes you can see more in the pen, but in motion it's ~100.

There are two ride ons. The voice one next to the toast does nothing. When you click on a rider and give them a directed thumb, that increases their drops earnings to double for 15 seconds. So riders at the lower levels can get a little game cash to spend on bikes and such. Once you spend enough time on the platform, you've earned enough drops to get the best bikes in all the categories 5 times over and they don't have much value. Maybe if Zwfit kept the bikes fresh or had more expensive top tier options, that would be a more critical component of the game.

As a female road cyclist, I have a guarded persona when I ride. (Years of group rides in a male-dominated sport). I'm now a newbie Zwifter and I am similarly cautious about the social aspect. Sarah, I'm curious if you have similar thoughts/feelings? Love your channel and look forward to each episode!
@EverythingIsPhotogenic
@EverythingIsPhotogenic 3 роки тому
Interesting question. I totally understand the sentiment and know that feeling is very real for a lot of women from either direct experience of close anecdotal understanding. I'm going to be honest, for me personally, I never give it a whole lot of thought, but there are reasons for that. Most probative being I live in a very suburban/ semi-rural area with a very small and respectful cycling community relatively speaking. Everyone knows everyone who rides either directly or by one or two degrees of separation. Women are revered and protected and anything resembling disrespect or form is swiftly dispensed with in our local clubs and shop teams. Secondly, I have been in male dominated industries for some time professionally and I don't take any shit. I carry myself with a sense of purpose and awareness in everything I do. I rarely get messed with anywhere, and when I do, generally an acerbic retort has people feeling rather sheepish very quickly. It's not a natural position for women and I totally get that, I've had to develop it with experience dealing with a LOT of men. I honestly get most of my harassment from aggressive male drivers and I suspect it has more to do with bitterness about sharing the road and very little if anything to do with me being a woman. In terms of Zwift, in 6 years I have NEVER been a victim of anything even remotely adjacent to inappropriate on the platform, despite having a clearly female avatar. That is not to say it doesn't exist, but I have a public profile and haven't had any weird chats or otherwise come my way. Random ride ons... Yep, all the time... People probably scope out my profile too, but there is literally nothing sensitive there at all so I honestly am not concerned with it. Strava would probably be the biggest concern with map data... That's crossed my mind relatively often, not so much as a woman but just as a human but the community is so big and I've been on Strava since 2014 with not even a blip - probably stems from my geography again. I also live literally 100 feet from the village police station. I'm certainly alert at all times, but I have the privilege of substantial insulation. I have a friend who just moved here from Baltimore and literally couldn't go from the parking lot into her workplace without harassment of one form or another, so I certainly don't take my perspective for granted as being that of the overwhelming majority. I always advocate for women being alert and purposeful. Always know your escape plan... Wheres your phone, can you unlock it quickly? have your camera set up for quick launch from your lock screen... I've had many an aggressive driver back off in a split second when they realize they're on camera. My ultimate hope is that the 5 percent women will become 10, then 20 and soon resemble the closer to 50 seen in triathlon. I think we will get there and the power in numbers will encourage more women to ride with confidence. I hope this was somewhat helpful 🙂
