@44excalibur4 місяці тому
@@ericrickson Yes, I'm aware of the story of the MiG-25 Foxbat and the big scare it put into the US military at the time. The F-15 Eagle was indeed created to counter the Foxbat, and it was indeed superior to the Foxbat as the MiG-25 was designed to be a high altitude, supersonic interceptor to take out enemy bombers, and not an air superiority fighter, which shocked many in the west who seriously overestimated the MiG-25's capabilities. But the F-15 and F-14 also served as a necessary replacement for the F-4 Phantom, as the Vietnam War showed how inadequate the Phantom was for the realities of modern combat, despite its speed and power, and that having two separate fighters for the Navy and Air Force designed for their unique requirements was better than the one-size-fits-all approach with the F-4.

@Elthenar4 місяці тому
True. It was an ancient plane by the time it was retired and it was absolutely cutting edge when it was built. To this day, I pissed that they chose the FA-18 over the modernized F-14. It would have kept everything great about the F-14, fixed the bulk of it's issues and added nearly everything good about the Superhornet. That plane would still likely be the best 4th gen fighter ever built had it seen production. Plus, the F-14 just looked cool. The camera loved it. So did toymakers, many anime mechs were F-14 clones and so were their toys.

@Elthenar4 місяці тому

Not possible in modern days. The F14 is too big compared to the smaller Super Hornet
@MrChickennugget3603 місяці тому
@@AM93000 how exactly is that beneficial? If why had the Super Tomcat 21 that would be an aircraft worth keeping in service since its greater payload makes it better for carrying large amounts of standoff weapons. Stealth Aircraft are dominating the skys these days but their one great weakness is limited payload due to carrying all ordinance internally. 4th Gen fighters don't have that issue and are being envisioned as missile trucks to back up stealth fighters. Not only would the Super Tom Cat 21 been better as a missile truck, but it could be used to carry hypersonic missiles, and due to its "tunnel" effect could perform supersonic maneuvers while carrying them to launch points.

its sad but no one other then an airforce can actually own a f-14 even when its 40 years old and retired. i have not heard of anyone able to buy one and even if you got one from a country that does still fly them getting any parts would be impossible. nearly all of the usa operated f-14's were melted into scrap metal, some are left in reserve for parts. seeing them fly in the movie is as close as were going to come to seeing this aircraft fly again :(

Top Gun on VHS was like $40. In 80's money? That's $108 today! Needless to say, I never got the tape, lol. I actually only saw bits of the film, here and there, till oddly enough I felt like I finally wanted to see it, then the new film was announced. One of those cool things that happens, on occasion. The OG movie is pure 80's awesomeness and the new film is a great, if overly delayed follow up. Better late, than never.

Anyone who has ever stood next to a Tomcat just knows that the landing gear is far, far, far stronger than some stupid handrail.

But but but then we wouldn't have the dramatic landing later on... and besides movies aren't real 🤫

Did anyone else think of "Firefox" (WB,1982) when those nozzle covers blew off?
