At some point, we need to stop fighting mental illness. Medication, therapy, and coping strategies only work when we are accepting and embracing our issues. This is a concept called mindfulness, a non-judging acceptance. Applying mindfulness to mental issues like anxiety, depression, and OCD allows us to stop fighting and start thriving.
Daniel McCutchen is a freshman at Harvard University. He is the founder of a non-profit fundraising organization called Walk For The Water, raising funds for clean accessible water for people in Burundi, Africa through local 5k races in Austin, Texas. He also serves as an advisor to the Aspen Institute’s National Youth Commission on Social Emotional and Academic Development, helping to push legislation on the implementation of social and emotional learning in public education. In high school, Daniel taught a class on social and Emotional learning, teaching at-risk freshman ways to manage relationships, emotions, and goals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I read somewhere that people with ocd have a wildly creative intellectual brain more so than the average person. It’s a blessing and a curse but your mind is so creative and good at picking up patterns that it can cause you fear and unease and you’re stuck in that pattern because your brain is so good at making things vivid.

Hi guys I have ocd, with several themes, I have been dealing with it since many years but got diagnosed 6 months back. I’m in a better position now. Few things helped me quite a bit in this fight. First I know you must hear it a lot but it’s acceptance, do not fight it consciously, just let it be. Second, Is trust on yourself, ocd gives you those thoughts because you fear them, sometime it can even confuse you with physical symptoms but do no fear it let it be. Just know this you’ve been with yourself since the beginning of time and you haven’t done this till now, why would you do this now? Lastly, keep in mind ocd is a disease of doubt, so just hold your head high, when you stop paying attention to the bully it will stop bullying you but sometimes to check your strength it will bully you more to get your attention but don’t give away and keep yourself busy. Lots of love.

Perfect talk, honestly just what I needed. Just acceptance and strategies for success. While it can be interesting to peel back my obsesions when I am in an anxious place it can do more harm than good. Most of the time even after I consider an event or situation that could have triggered an obsesive thought, compulsive behavior or some anxiety I have I just end up thinking "why me" anyway. At least right now being present is much better for me and my mental.

Very well done, Daniel! This is a really fine talk. Have you read any works by Jiddu Krishnamurti or Thich Nhat Hanh (especially his short book 'Anger')? That are both brilliant spiritual persons who understand how the mind works and are tremendously helpful for people with OCD. All the best to you!

My good pal has this and I am trying to help him my other friend is trying but some afraid to listen to his compulsions and are afraid that they'll end up like him but I'm gonna recommend this video to him because it's very good he tells me he counts his footsteps and has all kinds of fears compulsive counting and other stuff but look anxiety depression on top of it id say that's part and parcel of the condition but look if I could heal him or anyone else my other friends a and I would as this is unfair to my friend who we love

It was just a normal day, at least for an OCD sufferer like me. I was about to sleep after a tiring day of performing my daily rituals when my mind told me that there are dusts and hair strands on the lid of the container of my newly bought paint. I didn’t hesitated to get the diy hand gloves sewed by my sister specialized for when I need to wipe something. I thought cleaning and wiping the container was just another counting of 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3, 1-2, and 1, until I realized that I was stuck in a loop again of counting. My mind tells me every time I was about to finish counting that my bare hand is touching the surface of the container and I have to repeat counting from 4 again, I was crying while doing for it’s almost half an hour and my mind is still not satisfied. That very experience is just one of the many themes and faces of my OCD. But I know that there’s hope, I believe that it’ll be hard at first but at the end of the day, all these, the sufferings and the rituals that tortures us everyday will end. Keep on fighting everyone, keep on believing that soon, this illness shall pass.

Adding to what the speaker said (and following the same vein), you might try reading a book by Thich Nhat Hanh called 'Anger'. It was a tremendous help to me. It might just be for you as well (and it's short!). It is truly a remarkable book. Good luck!

If you can, please see a doctor and tell him or her about your compulsions and thoughts. Millions of people have the same thing, the same compulsions and thoughts. The right medication will help you to relax so that you can think more clearly. If you have no money, there are clinics in most towns that are sometimes free or they charge on a sliding scale because you have little money. You might try reading a book by Thich Nhat Hanh called 'Anger'. It is short and was a great help to me and might be a great start for you. Good luck!
