I disagree. I used to see him and the 400 Unit in basement bars, then theaters, then amphitheaters. If everyone else gets on board, I’ll be paying Rolling Stones prices to see him at football stadiums. No thanks. Everyone else should continue to turn up the Nickleback in their AirPods.

For me Nashville Sound is fantastic, and especially Vampires...that is one of his masterpieces...and the rest of it is, to me, very much on par with SMTF and Southeastern. Reunions took a little whlie to grow on me, but it did. I still find more of the previous three on my playlists tho. Thing is, I was never into lyrics until I started listening to Jason...I'm a relative newb..."discovered" him during the pandemic. Have listened to almost nothing else since. I see him growing and changing but I don't find his creativity wavering from DBT days to the present. Dude is amazing.

A MetallicA fan here for decades. I didn't know about this musician before. I must say it's a really good cover. To me, there are two kinds of good covers: when you nail the original and when you make it your own respecting the original. This one clearly falls into the latter. I'm only missing the solo, which would have been quite nice to have in this style. Other than that, as someone else has said, I clearly can imagine this song playing in a movie, be it a car chase, a fighting scene... or whatever Tarantino would be up to.

@@the_sky_is_blue_and_so_am_I I hadn't listened to it when you wrote your comment but I did later. Well, I wouldn't say they nailed it, they actually made it halfway their own, I think. Nailing a song, to me, is when they do it as similar as possible as the original, and Volbeat didn't. Not that it matters, as it's a really nice cover. Anyway, to me, the best "nailing a song" that I've ever listened to was a few years ago with this band called "Hush", a Deep Purple tribute band. They were on a tour with DP's own drummer Ian Paice, so a friend and I had to go. I like DP but my friend is (or at least was) as much a fan of the band as it takes. Well, the thing is they were playing the songs from Made in Japan, and they did it in such a way they were even nailing the mistakes from the original recording. They are so recognisable you just can't make them by chance or as your own mistake. My friend and I looked at each other in awe. So, from that moment on, that's the least a cover has to do so I can say it nails the original ;-)

@@fadetounforgiven - If you're literally just a cover band actively trying to replicate the original, then yeah, replicating the original is "nailing it". But to me, if I want something that sounds like the original, I'll listen to the original. If you can't make the cover song uniquely yours why bother at all? (Unless you're a tribute band of course literally trying to replicate the exact sound).

@@kingetzel2755 I remember almost 12 years ago that a friend and I went to this Deep Purple tribute band concert, only that the very Ian Paice was at the drums with them. They played songs from the Made In Japan. It was Spain, not Japan, but I do remember when they made it so perfectly that they even matched the mistakes from the original. My friend (who is a big DP fan) and I looked at each other like saying "have you heard that?". So, yes, sometimes the "nailed cover" is nice to listen to, mainly when you can't get to the original. Other than that, I agree that covers are some kind of uncertain territory when sometimes the result is not that great just because they wanted to make it their own way, and sometimes they are better than the originals (Johnny Cash anyone?)

If you're a tribute band attempting to be a clone of the original so people can hear exact copies of the songs live, then that's your purpose. But otherwise there's no reason to do the song if you're not going to make it your own. Especially in this context where the song literally comes from an album of Metallica cover songs. And as far as not having the original on hand, I have yet to be in a situation where I was trying to listen to an original version of a song and thought "oh no I can't find it - better break out the exact copy I have by a completely different group for some reason"
