TBH, I'd be more worried about standing abeam the engine, not behind. If it grenades, it'll be shooting shrapnel out the sides.

Pressure in the engine could send shit out the back and centrifugal force wants to send all the rotating parts straight out the sides once they let go. I think commercial airline engines have to be designed to theoretically contain most of that but that’s probably not true for hobby engines and are you gonna trust that hobby companie’s design either way?

The danger zone is abreast the turbine blades. I’m a recently retired MC-130P Flight Engineer and ran 4 gas guzzling Allison T56-A-15 turboprops for the last 13 years of my career. Rolls Royce owns the line now and I got to go to their maintenance school in Indianapolis back in 2016,,,2 weeks of tearing them down to the individual turbine blade section components and rebuilding them to spec. (Really cool class designed for Engine Maintenance Troops that not many Flight Engineers get a chance to even put in for) I learned a ton in those 2 weeks about engines I’d used in flught for over 3,000 flying hours to date at that time, but never truly understood the guts and bolts of. The one bug takeaway I have from that class was the discussion and privileged photo collection of mishaps that is not accessible to the public. When these turbine engines shell out a turbine and shit the bed, they don’t fuck around as they do so. They are intact, or they are NOT intact, and they slice through metal like a hot knife through butter I never sit in the plane of rotation of any turbine blade Any…… Ever. The metal that is moving is moving rotationally and it’s not gonna be a concern what comes out the ass end, as by the time it has slowed enough for debris to come out the butt, you will have ZERO doubt that she has shit the bed. Spectacular catastrophic failures “Go Big Or Stay Home” -Jet Engine “Hold My Beer” -Homebuilt Jet Engine
