For me pro sports play offs are my reset. It's a break in routine for a few weeks, and i always try to come out of it with new energy/a new direction. I find because playoff games are on a set schedule every year, it's easy to swap from the winter rut to the summer routine.

Jocko, I read Discipline Equals Freedom and did your 4:30 am routine for 4 months, and it started me off on a great path towards discipline. I’ve been bulking up and increased my strength in weights. Now I’m my cutting phase I’ve lost over 6 pounds and my body fat so far fell from 21% to 18.6% Update: As of this month, I’ve lost 30 lbs of fat, body fat is now 12.5% and I’m getting stronger

This is such a useful practice and it cannot be stressed enough. What I have learned to do is to Physically start doing something Before giving my mind a chance to complain which would otherwise lead to the 'software' freezing as you put it. If I have to do something I won't enjoy, I immediately take physical action to start it because I know that if I think about it I will freeze up and procrastinate - If you don't want to take out the trash, put your shoes on immediately, if you don't want to write a hard email, just start typing right away and don't let yourself stop. It works wonders and saves a lot of time you would otherwise spend trying to convince yourself to do something.

I have a similar understanding of this stuff. It's not so much getting yourself in the habit of doing a specific thing; rather, just doing A THING when you want or need to do it. It's also about breaking the habit of NOT doing the thing.

Setting timers/keeping lists, etc. is very important for me to keep up with my daily and weekly goals. I'm still old school in that I keep a legal pad on my desk broken down with each day and what I need to do on those days, including gym time, chores, etc. and then cross the item off the list once I'm done. It sounds weird, but that sense of knowing what is there to do and being able to have the satisfaction of clearing an item off the list keeps me focused. I know it's probably easier to do it electronically, but there's something about physically interacting with it, writing it down, that seems to imprint it in my brain better so I don't forget things. I do the same for workouts/fitness goals, I have a spreadsheet tracking weigh ins, fat/muscle %, personal bests on lifts/pushups, etc. Just makes it a bit easier to get through life when I have those things in order and know what I have to do later in the day/week.

If you're feeling burnt out, stressed, or like you're constantly running on empty, it may be time for a reset. Some signs that you need to take a step back and recharge include feeling irritable, exhausted, and unmotivated, or experiencing difficulty sleeping and concentrating. Remember that taking time for self-care and reflection is not selfish - it is essential for your well-being and productivity. So if you're feeling like you need a reset, give yourself permission to take a break and focus on what you need to feel rejuvenated.

I’ve been battling chronic brain lock recently…jacked my sleep regimen all up doing non-sense stuff. Instead of forcing things (which I did attempt), I decided to embrace what the cosmos was giving me. Before, I was an early riser 4:00am-5:00am and go to sleep 9-10pm. I stayed up way too late (or early rather) and pulled a few all nighters to where I found myself unable to fall asleep until 3-4am. After no luck forcing the earlier bedtimes, I decided as an experiment to embrace the new sleep schedule since that is what’s being given. I sleep like a baby now that I wait until my body signals truly needing rest. Productivity feels just as in-line. Looking back, feels like there’s so much in our heads thinking we need to do this or that, to a point where we get consumed by it all and don’t know who we truly are anymore. Should be interesting here forward, but the liberation that comes with just surrendering to the universe is one of the best deals in life I think I’ve ever made. Just the acceptance of oneself and nature’s forces around, feels very…appropriate.

i haven't reset or used Ctrl+Alt+Del in Windows in years, but then again I've build my PC and understand the basics. As long as you have good parts and drivers things just work if you keep them clean, updated and don't mess with thing you aren't supposed to, including in the internet. Good practices when using, help a lot, but yes a lot of that can have a parallel in our own lives. Turning off (not a Ctrl+Alt+Del or reset) is a must for any computer from time to time. Even the constant running hours can limit the years you can use since everything, including us, have a limited lifecycle. So, yes, we also need to switch off, reset, etc. or we burn up early!

I've been through a long list of very terrible things which have left me disabled. The only way I function, the only way... is to time everything and go from one thing right into the next and so on. I want to thank Jocko and Echo for helping me overcome my dentist fear. For 20 years I've taken meds to calm me before seeing the dentist. I would get uncontrollable shakes and go into panic attacks in the chair. Over time I was able to calm down with the regular tooth cleanings but I still needed meds for anything requiring the drill or shots. This last time I had decided that I think I could handle the visit without meds. Today, on the way to the dentist, I was beginning to feel a little nervous that I hadn't tried to get any meds. So I decided to say a quick prayer and listen to a few Jocko videos in the car as his videos always give me courage. I went into the dentist, had two small cavities filled, and I was completely calm. No issues at all. I feel like I overcame. Thank you.

That's actually a great analogy. The problem is of course being aware of when you're freezing up in the first place, otherwise how can you reset yourself? Computers are reliant on us resetting them when necessary, but in our case we usually don't have that external switch somebody can press for us. Operating System engineers include a number of precautions for the computer to reset or slow down and "unload" when it's getting overloaded with instructions, and the human equivalent of that could be practicing being mindful so that you're always aware of, and able to respond before your state of mind is about to hit a threshold and freeze up.

Just did this myself. The only caveat is you have to know yourself pretty well in order to pull off a hard reset. It's about knowing your Own psychology. What works for one person isn't going to work for another. If I told you what I did last night to reboot my brain, you wouldn't understand why that would work, and it probably wouldn't for you. I'm in recovery. For 3 years now I've noticed that whenever I would relapse, I would have a sort of mental/emotional reboot eventually and that would restart the process of recovery for me. Over time the lag between relapse & reboot shrunk. Eventually I was rebooting immediately after my relapses. RIGHT BACK on recovery road ! After seeing this process play out a bunch of times, I learned to leverage it myself before relapses. I now intentionally reboot my mind Every once in a while. When I feel like life isn't making any sense to me.

Big one for setting timers. Been doing it for years - especially on tasks i will likely procrastinate on and Im easily distracted. The timer gives me a focus point. It also stops getting over involved (unless its really neccisary) and can also turn things into a game. - how much can i fix in the house in 45 minutes - im only going to sit in the office for 90 minutes - how many quotes can i get through? . I am at a stage where I need to slam that button. I have accomplished a fair amount so far in my life at the age of 49 but I'm stuck in a poor routine of going work, having a good sense of accomplishment at work, then coming home and doing nothing. My wife and I drink Friday and Saturday night and that's it. I was in the best shape of my life a few years ago and would like to get back to that. I really would also like to do something more than what I am doing but it is so hard. When you talk about your brain freezing at the thought of performing "action" I can identify with that. I am writing this on UKposts right now thinking this is another form of procrastination. I have always struggled with this and somehow did really well with my life but I have never been happy with my level of procrastination.

The last couple of years I have been using Wim Hof breathing as a reset button. It worked every time. I guess something as fundamental as breath control can never fail.

I just have to create a playlist real quick... *A few moments later* Day is over and I've gone from two playlists to reinstalling my operating system. Also, the two playlists I used to have are gone. To be fair, I need a great playlist to get anything done, so this outcome isn't a surprise.

To further elaborate, it has to do somewhat with the system it’s built on and that system’s memory management. The main reason for program errors(there are plenty others) is either corrupt or overrun memory. The programs running are usually ineffective in handling their own trash and side effects. In this sense restarting is a good solution but we may want to also use a different program mentally. The ones we are using are either inefficient or the system isn’t to spec to handle it long term. I’d be more concerned with having a solid operating system with efficient programs than have to wait until it has to be restarted regularly. So make sure the programs aren’t creating issue with the system so to speak, then a restart will likely never be needed.

I agree with this one hundred percent but I will add something that I do in my personal life because it's actually based on the same idea of a computer reset. The first step is that you have to cut power. So that means for a designated period of time be at 5 hours 10 hours and in some cases 24 hours but no more than 24 hours. Indian store Gathering the information again. In designated periods of time you story collecting the information and moving towards your goal you might even have to break your goal down into 10 different parts and say okay I have 10 hours for this part I have 3 hours for this part and so on. Thank-you Jocko and Echo this is great content

It's interesting hearing people who don't know very much about how computers work talk about their experiences and their internal mental models of what must be going on inside the computer to cause the behavior they're seeing. I know that I have a lot of specialized knowledge, and that other people have chosen different sets of specialized knowledge, or to focus on some other aspect of their lives or personal growth, and that there are no reasonable value judgements to be made, in general, about those choices. I just find it an interesting datapoint, especially from the standpoint of UX design. In my opiniong, a good UX design encourages people using the UX to develop a semi-coherent mental model of what's going on inside that at least bears some resemblance to reality. In general, "heavy computation" is not what causes crashes. It's specific kinds of tasks that exercise specific parts of the system that are poorly written, either through carelessness, or because it's really hard to write them correctly. Sometimes, it can be specific tasks that exercise a specific piece of hardware in a certain unusual way and it's actually the hardware that's at fault. Though most hardware problems like that nowadays are papered over by software that's compensating for the defect. Windows is a complete jumbled mess inside that is far more complex than it needs to be. It's a poorly written pile of trash. And this is an organizational and historical problem, and not a reflection on any individual programmer working at Microsoft or even a general observation about the quality of programmers Microsoft hires. A poor organization can create terrible software even if they only hire exceedingly competent people.

The first thing I do when I walk into work is something I do every single day without fail: I conduct a NBS-BFA - aka: a "no bull-shit battlefield-assesment." "Are we winning or losing? Do WE control the battle-space or does the enemy? Do we need to throw additional resources at this situation or do we have it handled? Should we order an engagement or do we need to fall-back and recover? Do we need artillery support, air-cover, medics? Are we winning? Can we win? What is the: NO-BULLSHIT situation on the ground?"
@realdizzle87

There's that old saying: the first step to not digging your grave is to: stop digging. When you're the U.S. Military and movies have taught you that you're going to win every engagement you every fall into... it's important to have someone in a position of command and communication that can recognize - we're getting our ass kicked and we need help.
@realdizzle87

If you ever find yourself in command of other people - you shouldn't retract, but you also need to remember: there are guys 200 meters down the beach that are getting blasted out of motar-holes by the craziest RPK fire the world has ever heard of... meanwhile, you're collecting sea-shells with Shelly on the sea-shore.

For a good analogy of why turning your electronics off and on again works in case you're wondering: You know your way from your home to the shop, but you accidentally take a wrong turn and continue to try to correct it but now you're lost and have no idea how to get to the shop, or how to get home. If someone were able to put you back home, assuming nothing goes wrong, you should now know the way to the shop again from here. Turning off the computer puts everything back home so it knows the way to the shop again.

How Human Nature Works Human nature is the desire to receive, also called “desire to enjoy,” and it functions by receiving what is beneficial to itself and rejecting what is harmful. Everything in our lives is built upon this calculation where we first try to distance ourselves from harm, and then seek how to draw ourselves closer to what is beneficial. Human nature also includes a multilayering of systems that work simultaneously on still, vegetative, animate and human levels. One of those systems is our bodily one, which operates involuntarily. If our bodies are healthy, then they know what is good for them and draw that goodness to themselves. After the bodily system, there is the emotional system, which also functions relatively according to instinct. From the emotional system, we move to the mind, and from the mind to the intellect, and so on. That is, we have systems over systems that concurrently work on receiving what is beneficial and rejecting what is harmful. Such is human nature and the essence of our lives. Our every desire, thought and action operates according to the calculation, “How can we receive what is most beneficial to us and reject what is harmful?”
