Graham Hancock, formerly a foreign correspondent for "The Economist," has been an international bestselling author for more than 30 years with a series of books, notably "Fingerprints of the Gods," "Magicians of the Gods" and "America Before," which investigate the controversial possibility of a lost civilization of the Ice Age destroyed in a global cataclysm some 12,000 years ago. Graham is the presenter of the hit Netflix documentary series "Ancient Apocalypse."

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:56 *🎓 Flint discusses his goal to demystify the process and purpose of Archaeology.* 02:18 *🖼️ Joe Rogan describes an Athenian artifact, leading to a discussion on the misconceptions about historical artworks and their cultural implications.* 04:25 *🛰️ The conversation covers the use of advanced technology like lasers and aerial surveys in Archaeology to discover and analyze archaeological sites.* 14:20 *📚 Flint advocates for open data in Archaeology, mentioning the availability of millions of archaeological records to researchers and the public.* 18:17 *🛠️ Flint refutes the possibility of a metallurgical civilization in the Ice Age based on the absence of metallurgical emissions in ice core samples.* 19:28 *🚢 Flint questions the absence of shipwrecks from the purported global civilization, arguing that substantial archaeological exploration of submerged areas would have uncovered such evidence if it existed.* 20:49 *🚢 Joe Rogan discusses the exceptional preservation of the Ernest Shackleton shipwreck, emphasizing the potential for ancient artifacts to remain intact underwater in cold conditions.* 22:13 *🌀 Flint references research on hurricane effects on archaeological sites, suggesting that natural disasters do not necessarily disrupt underwater archaeological sites significantly.* 31:48 *🇨🇱 Graham discusses the Monte Verde site in Chile, which presented evidence of human settlement predating the Clovis culture, and the initial resistance it faced from the archaeological community.* 34:50 *📺 Graham addresses the controversy surrounding his Netflix series and the response from the Society for American Archaeology, illustrating the tension between mainstream archaeology and alternative historical narratives.* 37:54 *🏜️ Graham questions the extent of archaeological exploration in the Sahara, suggesting that significant discoveries could still be made in largely unexplored areas.* 43:56 *🗺️ Graham Hancock discusses exploring underwater structures globally, guided by local knowledge, illustrating the potential for undiscovered archaeological sites.* 45:45 *🌊 Hancock argues that the submerged rock structures he has explored were shaped by humans, not natural processes, based on over 200 dives at the site.* 44:49 *🏛️ Graham details diving in a man-made tunnel in Japan with visible megalithic structures, asserting its artificial origin.* 47:05 *🔍 After a dive, a geologist admits to Graham that certain underwater structures could not have been formed naturally.* 49:55 *🌍 Graham argues for the necessity of more archaeological investigations in unexplored areas like the Sahara, Amazon, and submerged continental shelves.* 51:34 *📏 Flint highlights the extensive coverage and data collected through required archaeological surveys in developed countries, though he acknowledges it's not perfect.* 54:06 *🤨 Robert Schoch’s changing opinion on Yonaguni is discussed, indicating the complexity and debate surrounding the site’s origins.* 01:05:55 *🌱 Flint Dibble highlights the development of agriculture in South America as a marker for tracing civilization progress.* 01:11:56 *🗺️ Flint counters the notion that archaeology has neglected potential submerged sites by presenting extensive evidence of underwater surveys.* 01:26:11 *📊 Flint discusses the shift in archaeology towards big data, highlighting its role in understanding historical lifestyles and individual survival stories.* 01:26:24 *🌊 Graham Hancock reiterates the underexplored nature of submerged continental shelves, suggesting that insufficient study makes it premature to dismiss the possibility of lost civilizations.* 01:27:35 *🌐 Graham uses inundation maps to point out the historical existence of large islands like the Grand Bahama Banks, which were above water until about 6,900 years ago, as potential sites of ancient human activity.* 01:36:24 *🛤️ Flint shares his experience with archaeological road excavations in Romania, using them as an example to discuss the preservation of artifacts and their context in understanding ancient roadways.* 02:00:18 *🤔 The conversation shifts to the ethics of archaeological interpretation and the portrayal of research in media, exploring how public and academic perceptions are shaped.* 02:04:13 *🧠 Flint clarifies his statements regarding the misinterpretation of his views on racial implications in archaeology, emphasizing the importance of context in academic discussions.* 02:09:47 *🗞️ Hancock criticizes the influence of certain academics on media, claiming they misrepresent his work, contributing to a negative and hostile reception in the public and academic realms.* 02:12:07 *🔍 Discussion shifts to academic freedom and the perceived hostility within archaeology towards alternative theories, with Hancock citing historical examples of academic resistance to new ideas.* 02:15:34 *🌐 Flint discusses the impact of public engagement on social media and the misunderstandings that can arise from public and academic interactions online.* 02:30:03 *🔄 Hancock suggests that significant cultural narratives can be transformed within a single generation through deliberate changes imposed by conquerors, creating entirely different historical narratives.* 02:33:58 *📅 Joe Rogan and Hancock discuss the historical impact of colonization on indigenous beliefs, suggesting that conquerors often try to reshape the cultural narratives of the people they dominate.* 02:40:36 *🏺 Hancock searches for specific examples of remote sensing data from the Gung Padang site to support his claims of advanced prehistoric civilization, demonstrating the challenges of presenting complex archaeological data in a public forum.* 02:52:01 *🏛️ Dibble argues that rapid, intense destruction, like that from natural disasters, can paradoxically preserve archaeological evidence rather than destroy it.* 03:02:28 *🌾 Discussion shifts to agriculture, with Dibble explaining the archaeological process for identifying domesticated plants and discussing the evolutionary pressures that lead to domestication.* 03:05:00 *🌱 Dibble elaborates on the gradual domestication process, highlighting how human cultivation practices inadvertently selected for plant traits beneficial for agriculture.* 03:13:03 *🌽 Presentation of an ancient maize cob from 1250 AD illustrates the significant changes in plant size due to human selection over centuries.* 03:15:09 *🚜 Introduction of a "Neolithic package" in Europe around 6400 BC, including multiple domesticated plants and animals, marks a significant technological transfer.* 03:37:57 *🧪 Geochemical analysis links pyramid construction materials to specific quarry sites, reinforcing the dating and sourcing of the materials.* 03:38:54 *🌊 Debates the interpretation of erosion patterns on the Sphinx, discussing whether they could be definitively linked to water erosion from a specific prehistoric period.* 03:40:04 *🌐 Advocacy for considering geological and traditional evidence in evaluating the history and age of the Sphinx and surrounding structures.* 03:53:43 *🌌 The depiction of the "churning of the Milky Ocean" at Angkor Wat, Cambodia, symbolizes the astronomical process of precession, linking mythology with celestial movements.* 03:54:26 *🌅 Angkor Wat's alignment during the Spring Equinox, where the sun rises directly over the central tower, exemplifies precise ancient engineering intended to mark astronomical events.* 03:56:06 *🌍 The base perimeter and height of the Great Pyramid, when multiplied by a precessional number, correspond closely to the Earth's equatorial circumference and polar radius, respectively.* 03:57:12 *🌞 The Sphinx's alignment with the rising sun during the Spring Equinox further supports the theory of its astronomical significance.* 03:58:05 *🦁 The alignment of the Sphinx with the constellation Leo approximately 12,600 years ago during the "Age of Leo" suggests an epoch-specific construction or significance.* 04:00:25 *🌟 The shafts within the Great Pyramid align with the stars of Orion's belt as they appeared in the sky around 2500 BC, demonstrating an intentional celestial alignment.* 04:14:35 *🏺 The discussion emphasizes the danger of becoming a 'lost civilization' due to ignoring cultural and historical preservation.* 04:15:03 *🛡️ Addressing threats like looting and the importance of funding for site protection is highlighted as critical for preserving archaeological sites.* 04:16:38 *🌾 Discusses the slow adaptation to climate change in ancient civilizations as a warning to modern societies to better prepare for environmental changes.* 04:20:05 *🕊️ Proposes that embracing a diversity of methodologies could enrich understanding of history, suggesting that mainstream and alternative researchers share common goals.* 04:21:40 *🗣 Highlights the importance of direct communication in resolving disputes and misunderstandings, particularly in academic and scientific contexts.* Made with ❤ for the work Joe Rogan, Graham Hancock and Flint Dibble are conducting.

Graham also pointed out how the archeological community (and this smoothly translates to science communities at large) stifled and stomped out any opposition to their maintained views, ignoring evidence from their fellow members who were later proven right. @@mosesszi2281 I'm using survey to mean carefully and thoroughly examine rather than as in surveying land. With modern technologies, you don't really need to excavate to know what is very deep under the surface, and Graham knows that (because he has collaborated with people using these techniques in lieu of excavation), but it seems like he's clinging to specifically excavation because he knows that the small amount of it that's been done makes it seem like the desert has barely been investigated.

Most of Graham's evidence is a lack, or "these geological features _seem as if_ they were manmade". It seems like the only logical point Graham has to make is that "We should be doing more to excavate the Sahara desert and land that was exposed during the ice-age.". Otherwise it seems like all of his 'discoveries' are based on intrigue and things apparently seeming suspicious. Flint actually makes the best and definitive point that "We would find other types of evidence if humans actually inhabited these areas". Grahams logic seems to be based on supposed purpose of archaeological finds, while Flint's is actually based on the actual materials that they find.

But since your into serious scholars, explain to me how 15 ton stones were taken from quarries 500 miles away? Oh ya dont forget about the mountains you have to get over without roads! 2.3 million times, by the way, for each stone. Almost forgot, they have to be cut to the exact millimeter everytime so the whole structure doesnt collapse, and ohhhh ya you have to lift them one on top of each other for over 450 feet!man those gyms thousands of years ago must have been really good! Not to mention the calculators and computers they used with electricity thousands of years ago!! Let me know when the archeologist scholars have an answer 😊

One thing Joe gets wrong is the idea that the ancient Egyptians stand out as being completely unlike anything else from the time period. The civilizations of the middle east were also building grand monuments. For example, the Great Ziggurat of Ur was built about 4100 years ago, and was estimated at 210 feet (64m) in length, 150 feet (46m) in width and over 100 feet (30m) in height. This isn't as big as the Great Pyramid but it's in the same order of magnitude. The smaller (but still massive) Anu ziggurat at Uruk was constructed almost 2000 years earlier than that, around 4000 BCE. And don't forget the Olmec's Great Pyramid of La Venta and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. Although coming much later, they were built by cultures who hadn't developed agriculture until a couple thousand years after the people of Egypt and the middle east.

When Graham Hancock isn't the only voice in the room his position retreats from "here is evidence for a seafaring advanced civilization" to "you can not rule out my hypothesis". He's not a grifter, but he knows his position isn't supported by compelling evidence and is searching to prove himself right and anything that fits his narrative.

One major issue in academia is that the experts at the peak of their field are uncharismatic and bad at getting an audience. This means that the boringly presented cutting edge theories end up failing to get an audience. Then people making claims with much less evidence and much more passion amass non-expert audiences, whether the public or politicians (think COVID or pro govt. economics). Thereby people acquire a healthy distrust of experts, especially in medicine, but also unfortunately are drawn to quacks that are also wrong.

Without classifying rock type, he's just looking at rock and saying they remind him of staircases or whatever. You need rock type to determine fracture, weathering, erosional, and deposition structures. Without it you can't say almost anything in cases like this.
